BSSC Boardof Directors

It is time to seriously start thinking about getting in shape for the upcoming ski sea-son! And, equally important, it is also time to start planning your schedule to include one or more of our many Mammoth trips! We have an early season drive-up trip in December, followed by monthly weekend bus trips and several week-long trips planned!

And did you know...for the 2010-2011 season... - The scheduled opening day is November 11th. - The price of a one day adult lift ticket will be $92. - The price of a one day Senior lift ticket will be $46.

But I have some good news on the lift ticket front...Mammoth is offering our club the opportunity to buy a block of lift tickets at a seriously discounted price. So, if you do not have a season pass and are interested in buying some tickets at a group price, please let our Mammoth Trip Director, Christy Walchli, know ASAP! We will need to make a decision soon and will have the actual pricing for your consideration. The savings will be significant!

Please sign up early and volunteer to help on one or more of our trips. What a fulfill-ing way to give back to the club that offers you so much!

Jess GormanOur BSSC Bio for NovemberFree Association from Jess...Born in Lynwood CA, raised in Orange County.Only son of four children whose family can be seen daily on reruns of “That 70’s Show.”As a teenager, other than school, my main objective was to see how fast I could get my car to go, it was the age of the muscle car.

During college at CSUF gas prices became too high to drive a gas guzzler, so girls and volleyball became the diversion from studies. After graduation I could not find a job in my degreed field so I took a job in construction to have some money until I found the job that I wanted. I retired after 34 years of build-ing houses and supplying the American dream to new families. Meanwhile one of those geology coeds became Mrs. Gorman and we had three children; a daughter and two sons. With three children; school, baseball, soccer, divorce, scouts, work, and family vacations occupied most of the next twenty-something years.

I view my family and friends as my most valued possession. An ideal evening is getting together with family or friends, and sitting down to a nice long dinner at mine or one of their homes and enjoying each others company. Many of the friends I have known for more years than I want to think about., and others I have met through skiing which I took up after my divorce about nineteen years ago. Skiing has served as physical exercise, social networking, and an excuse to travel.

Aspen/Snowmass is my favorite resort here in the states, but travel to Europe offers so much more to do than just skiing. I have been fortunate to have skied in Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria, which means I have been able to see Rome, Venice, Tuscany, Paris, Innsbrook, and the Matterhorn among others. I first joined Balboa Ski and Sports Club in the early to mid 90’s. The reason for BSSC because I went on a trip with a friend who was a member and it was led by Bob Larkin and I had never seen anyone put in so much effort to make sure everyone had a good time.

In addition to skiing I enjoy biking, golfing, a little SCUBA, and a little gardening. I have ridden in the Rosarita – Ensenada 50 mile bike ride ten times but that’s a little scary right now. In the construction industries you get to play a certain amount of golf for charity tournaments so I got to play some nice courses dur-ing that time. One thing that I am proud to say I accomplished was to backpack to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, what an absolutely beautiful creation that is.

I am recently retired and not quite sure of what I am doing. I do get to read the paper in the morning, which is something new. I spend some time doing a little charity work so I can feel good about myself. Cooking has always been something I enjoyed doing and now I have the time to play around in the kitchen. I have taken a class in photography, which is something I use to do in college, and am trying to get away from the point and shoot and trying to be a little more creative with my photos. I am enjoying having the time to relax and look forward to what life will bring next.

Let’s Go Skiingby Maxine Hanlon, VP Skiing

The weather’s wet and we know there will be snow, you just have to decide just when to go!Check out the prices and the dates of the Mammoth trips. If you are interested in the Mammoth tickets (see Connie’s article) for our trips or other Mammoth opportunities, NOW is the time to let us know. The Board will discuss the options at the next BOD meeting and make a decision on buying discounted tick-ets to pass on to our members.

Utah Trip —We had to say so long to Utah trip. We are sad that the Board had to cancel the trip, but the club needed 25 people to provide it at that price. Our Board of Directors made this decisiion at their October meeting.

New REI Location in Tustin Ranch Market next to Best Buy. Stop by and say hi to Steve the new store manager. More on REI soon!

Oktoberfest — If you missed Oktoberfest at Old World, you missed a fun party. Steve and Peggy Olson brought a new pup that lasted for 4 races - congrats - good to see you all. Alan has done a great job of organizing this event and getting free tickets for us for the last three years. Now is the time to go by his place and see how your snow legs or that new knee is doing before you get on the slopes. Call him for a trial appointment - he is sure to be getting busy now. Virtual Snow is at 7561 Center Ave. in Huntington Beach, inside Old World Village, unit #20.
