What Do Leaders Have in

Common?



In this session we are going to have a conversation about LEADERHIP…• What is a Leader?• What are the characteristics of leaders?• What do leaders have in common?• What are some of the resources you can use

to get more information about leadership?



Define a Leader• Take a minute to write down your definition of

a leader. “A leader is a person who….”• Take 3 minutes to share your definitions with

those at your table…can you blend these into one definition?

• Now let’s share your table’s definition(s) with everyone for a few minutes.



Given these definitions, can you think of a person in your personal life or someone you have worked with who you think fits this definition? What qualities does this person have that causes you to define him or her as a “leader” in your heart and mind?

Would you like to share this with the group?



Presidents of the United States are, by their title and responsibilities, called the LEADER of our country and one of the leaders of the free world.

What makes them different?

Why would you say all six are leaders?



• Can you have a good leader whose private life or personal conduct may not be the best?

• Can you separate the leadership from the private life?

• Who are some examples of leaders whose personal lives may have gotten negative attention?



Last year there were over 300,000 new books or new editions published in the U.S.

How many were about leadership?Lots and lots

What this tells us is there are many views about leadership…



The Leadership Challenge written by James Kouzes and Barry Posner is widely considered to be one of the best books, if

not the best book, ever written on leadership.



Kouzes and Posner identified Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership• Model the Way• Inspire a Shared Vision• Challenge the Process• Enable Others to Act• Encourage the Heart



In his book It Worked for Me in Life and Leadership, Colin Powell share his Thirteen Rules on leadership:1. It ain’t as bad as you think. It will look better in

the morning2. Get mad, then get over it3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position

that when your position falls your ego goes with it.

good decision7. You can’t make someone else’s choices. You

shouldn’t let someone else make yours

In Lee Iacocca’s book Where Have All The Leaders Gone? Iacocca describes theThe Nine Cs of Leadership:1. A leader has to show CURIOSOTY. 2. A leader has to be CREATIVE.3. A leader has to COMMUNICATE 4. A leader has to be a person of CHARACTER5. A leader must have COURAGE



6. A leader must have CHARISMA7. A leader has to be COMPETENT8. A leader has to have COMMON SENSE9. Leadership is forged in times of CRISIS

• Take a minute to write down what you think is the difference between a boss and a leader

• Take 3 minutes to share your reasons with those at your table.

• Now let’s share your table’s reasons with everyone for a few minutes.



You don’t lead by hitting people over the head or being a bully because you have authority over someone

Have you ever had a boss who was brutal to employees? Would you call them a leader?
