    o Electronic Resource Catalogs in the ULB library .

    We searched for the key words:social impact, economic impact, with

    HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa in different combinations for articles in

    English from 1985 to 2008.

    Three mechanisms:

    Disposal of self-insuring assets

    Disposal of productive assets

    Destitution

    Consequences are psycho-social and economic viz.:

    o Increased Psycho-social cost

    o Perturbed household composition and health

    o Changes in investment and consumption

    o Reduction in production and earnings- labour supply & costs

    Vulnerable groups: Children &Orphans , Girls & women and Old persons.

    Microeconomic impact:

    Agriculture and Live stock

    Health: burden and loss of staff

    Education: supply of experienced teachers ; children evicted from school

    Others:Transport,Mining

    Mesoeconomic impact:

    Expenditure:Healthcare costs, burial fees, training and recruitment

    Revenue:Absenteeism due to illness , Time off to attend funeral , etc.

    Macroeconomic Impact:Life expectancy: life expectancy as the HIV prevalence

    Development: Underdevelopment++

    Gross Domestic product:0.2% to 20% in HIV affected to non-HIV affected countries

    Individual level/Households : effect of impact uncontroversial & significantly negative

    Gender: Few studies . vulnerability of ; inequalities widens and intensifies

    Children :extensive literature negative effect of HIV

    Microeconomy :publications+++ 2 major effects labor supply and costs

    Agriculture:Effects adverse , loss of labor supply & remittance income.

    Worsen the existing food crisis in many countries.

    Education: significant negative impact of parental death on child schooling

    Health:Significantly negative effect

    Private firms and enterprises:varied severity, impact >smaller firms & some sectors.

    Macroecononomy :Many models with mixed results.GDP.

    Since its onset HIV has been threatening the social fabric of societies in the most affected

    countries and eroding the social and economic safety net.

    Households are the first units affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

    Agriculture: impact considerable. Food insecurity ++

    Health sector is heavily impacted ;burden personnel

    Education sector, the pool of qualified teachers is also shrinking ,children evicted

    Business & firms :sizeable impact on the labour force, costs and productivity

    Overall the impact on the economy and development is likely to intensify in the near future

    Only prevention, treatment and increased support will allow the countries affected and the

    international community to reverse or at least reduce the dire predictions of the implications

    of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
