With its 3 and 5 pole connector system RST 25i3/i5, Wieland offers the optimal solution for AC connections. Preassembled components and IP68 protection enable a fast and safe installation, even under the most adverse conditions. The RST AC system includes connectors for on-site field wiring and device connectors for inverter housings (leading inverter manufacturers already deliver their product with RST connectors installed).

Inverters are often installed in groups, with the same distance between them. The resulting cable lengths repeat from system to system. The AC side can now be installed similarly to the traditional DC module to module interconnection method.

This concept effectively reduces the logistics and installation times to a minimum. This advantage pays off not only for initial installation, but for any subsequent service or add-on work. For servicing, individual inverters can be disconnected from the mains supply by simply unplugging them. The electrical contacts are touch- protected against accidental contact. A quick installation and return to operation ensures a high yield system.

Some leading inverter manufacturers also use a 3 pole, 20 Amp version.

Protection

Cells and inverters are very sensitive to overvoltage and impulse currents, such as switching and lightning surges. The ABB surge arrester range for special DC limits the overvoltage to an acceptable level for the equipment to be protected and prevent damage to installations. Therefore, the risk of financial losses should be taken into account when considering an investment in solar panels. One of the benefits of using SPDs is a better return on investment.

Lightning and overvoltage protectionProtection devices for PV installations

Location Type Role Options Comment

A DC Protection of cells If the distance L1 < 10 m, only OVR PV in A or B is recommended.

Connection to the chassis should be as short and rectilinear as possible. The lightning arrester depending on the environment should

be installed in a leak-proof casing.

B DC Protection of the inverter input on the DC side

If the distance L1 < 10 m, only OVR PV in A or B is recommended.

Connection to the earthing bar and to the ground of the inverter on the DC side should be as short and rectilinear as possible.

C AC Protection of the inverter output on the AC side

Routine installation Connection to the earthing bar and to the ground of the inverter on the AC side should be as short and rectilinear as possible.

D AC AC head protection at the entrance of the building

Routine installation Connection to the earthing bar should be as short and rectilinear as possible.

ABB protection devicesComponent supplier for residential and power plant application

ABB has been working for many years, as both a manufacturer and supplier, to offer products and solutions that reduce the environmental impact of energy systems. In a world of ever diminishing resources and soaring energy demand, the focus of ABB’s research lies in developing efficient and sustainable ways to generate, transmit, distribute and use electrical energy.

With vast experience in Automation Products, ABB is constantly searching for new ways to expand and enhance existing technologies to meet the needs of its customers. In a society where climate change is becoming an ever stronger argument for increased use of clean energy, such as wind or solar power.

ABB represents the best supplier for OEMs, installers and general contractors, offering a complete portfolio of products to support development of the renewable energy market. For the photovoltaic market, ABB supplies a comprehensive range of high technology products for virtually every residential, commercial and power plant application to grant its customers access to renewable sources of energy.

An investment in a solar plant is an investment in and for the future. The profitability calculation derived from the amount invested, term of financing and amortisation is based on factors such as the size and output of the system, climatic conditions and the general conditions arising from the geographical/regional installation location.

Although the risk presented to the systems by lightning, over- and reverse currents and overvoltage can be defined statistically, there are always elements of uncertainty. Therefore, ABB sees integrated solutions for overvoltage protection as an absolute prerequisite. These take the form of tried-and-tested components which ensure that the level of income corresponds to the forecasts for your development.

Protection

Residual current circuit breakers (RCCB)B Type, DC applications

Residual current devices ensure protection of people and installations against fault current to earth and fire risks. An RCD B type is required on the AC side in case of lack of electrical separation between the AC and DC side.

The devices save money and improve global efficiency by using PV converters without an internal insulation transformer.

The RCCBs F202 PV B and F204 B are intended for installation of single and three phase PV converters. They protect against fire risks and leakage currents.

Other models available, please enquire for more information.

F200 B type For smooth DC earth fault current

F200 B selective type For smooth DC earth fault current

F200 PV B type For smooth DC earth fault current for PV applications

Function: protection against the effects of sinusoidal alternating, direct pulsating and pulsating DC or smooth DC earth fault currents; protection against indirect contacts and additional protection against direct (with I∆n=30 mA) contacts.

Function: protection against the effects of sinusoidal alternating, direct pulsating and pulsating DC or smooth DC earth fault currents with an intentional tripping delay, which permits to realize the selectivity with downstream instantaneous devices; protection against indirect contacts.

Where an electrical installation includes a PV power supply system without at least simple separation between the AC side and the DC side, an RCD installed to provide fault protection by automatic disconnection of supply should be type B according to IEC 60755.

Electric vehicles

Everyone agrees that the future belongs to electric drives. The paths for developing electric cars were defined in the master plan of the German Federal Government, the political committees of the EU as well as in the USA and Asia. The German Federal Government even plans to turn Germany into the leading European nation with respect to electromobility by 2020.

The German Manager Magazine estimates that there will be over 2.5 million electric cars on the roads in Germany by 2020. According to Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, director of the Center of Automotive Research at the FH Gelsenkirchen, each car sold in the year 2025 will have at least a hybrid drive. This is why all leading vehicle manufacturers are working at full speed to develop electric cars for serial production.

Solutions for powerful compact batteries are being developed at the same time.

Decisive for the mass acceptance of electric cars is the development of a corresponding charging infrastructure to be able to recharge the electric cars.

The most important prerequisite for this is above all a uniform charge socket and the corresponding plug. As a specialist for plug-type connections, MENNEKES contributes its know-how to this future-oriented business field.

Climate change is now an ethical issue for most people and their governments world-wide. And for companies serious about corporate responsibility as well as cost reduction, the Smart Building is now a priority. Intelligent building controls significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon footprint.Building controls work together, autonomously or centrally, to realise substantial reductions in energy consumption from monitoring and control of the building environment.

Constant Daylight (Daylight Harvesting)The DURA-TECH DLC100/200 lighting control module from DKSH has Constant Daylight (Daylight Harvesting) and dimming capabilities, helping to make your commercial lighting more energy-efficientWhile there are many strands to carbon footprint reduction, commercial lighting is probably the most visible and emblematic of the struggle. We all know that changing to low energy light bulbs can reduce energy consumption. But such lighting is still often left on when rooms are empty, dramatically illustrated by any night-time city skyline. Plus there is the residual heat generated which causes extra load on a facility’s air conditioning plant.

Constant DaylightSimple timers can reduce some of this overhead, as can presence detection (which automatically switches lights on and off when someone enters/leaves a room) or absence detection (which requires manual light activation but automatically switch off when someone leaves.) But now there is a smarter and greener adjunct to these tools: Constant Daylight (also known as Daylight Harvesting.)

The idea behind Constant Daylight/Daylight Harvesting is simple: using a combination of presence/absence detectors, light level detection and a lighting controller. The lighting of a room adjusts to complement current natural light, producing a comfortable, constant lighting load which is switched off when occupancy has ceased.

Using less powerSo effective is Constant Daylight that in a recent installation, on a typically overcast spring day, the ambient light level in a classroom of 15 sq m at a steady 300 lux used 60 per cent less power than conventional lighting. And in some cases, a bright, sunny day enables Constant Daylight to eliminate artificial light use altogether. Obviously Constant Daylight cannot be used at night, but presence/absence detection means that full lighting is only used when a room is occupied, changing your building to a low-carbon gap in the night skyline.

That’s why Constant Daylight/Daylight Harvesting is a powerful and cost effective tool in your quest for ever greater carbon footprint reductions.

Wieland GESIS modular wiringUsing the Wieland GESIS wiring system dramatically reduce installations costs. The GESIS system not only provides control, but also distributes AC power around the building. Simply plug in the DLC100/200 Light Control Module with Daylight Harvesting to the GESIS cable, and then connect lights using pre-made leads and connectors, it’s that simple.

RTT sortingRTT’s UniSort near infra red sorters are an essential step in turning waste streams into reliable fuel sources. Being able to identify nearly all organic compositions, it enables engineering of the calorific value as well as removes undesired materials such as PVC.

Matthiessen bag openingIn order to free materials for sorting, composting or RDF generation, it is necessary to open the plastic bags that the typical household waste and commercial waste is presented to a plant. The Matthiessen bag opener is one of the most reliable machines for this job with up to 50 tonnes per hour throughput.

Size reduction of wood, plastics, paper, and mixed waste Size reduction is the key to turning solid waste streams into fractions that can be utilised for energy generation. DKSH offers a range of machines from HAAS Pre-crushers and hammermills, to Weima single shaft shredders, fast and slow. Both manufacturers have established themselves as leading suppliers in Europe.

HSM balingTo reduce transport costs, the fuel as well as recyclables derived from alternative waste processes are baled in fully automatic channel bale presses.
