    - Low fat and no fat milk products often

    contain milk solids that contain MSGand/or contain carrageenan, guar gum,and/or locust bean gum. Low fat and nofat versions of ice cream and cheese maynot be as obvious as yogurt, milk, cream,cream cheese, cottage cheese, etc., butthey are not exceptions.

    - Protein powders and protein drinkscontain glutamic acid, which, invariably,will be processed free glutamic acid(MSG). Individual amino acids are notalways listed on labels of protein powdersand drinks.

    - At present, there is an FDA requirementto include the protein source when listinghydrolyzed protein products on labels ofprocessed foods. Examples arehydrolyzed soy protein, hydrolyzed wheatprotein, hydrolyzed pea protein,hydrolyzed whey protein, hydrolyzed, cornprotein. If a tomato, for example, werewhole, it would be identified as a tomato.Calling an ingredient tomato proteinindicates that the tomato has beenhydrolyzed, at least in part, and that

    processed free glutamic acid (MSG) ispresent.

    - Disodium guanylate and disodiuminosinate are relatively expensive foodadditives that work synergistically withinexpensive processed free glutamic acid(MSG).

    - MSG will be found in some soaps,shampoos, hair conditioners, andcosmetics, where MSG is hidden iningredients with names that include thewords "hydrolyzed," "amino acids," and/or

    "protein."

    - Drinks, candy, and chewing gum are

    potential sources of hidden MSG and/oraspartame, neotame. and AminoSweet(the new name for aspartame). Neotameis a relatively new ingredient that seemsnot to be in use in the United States.

    - Aspartame will be found in somemedications, including children'smedications.

    - Binders and fillers for medications,nutrients, and supplements, bothprescription and non-prescription, enteralfeeding materials, and some fluids

    administered intravenously in hospitals,may contain MSG.

    - According to the manufacturer, VarivaxMerck chicken pox vaccine (VaricellaVirus Live), contains L-monosodiumglutamate and hydrolyzed gelatin, both ofwhich contain processed free glutamicacid (MSG). It would appear that most, ifnot all, live virus vaccines contain someingredient(s) that contains MSG.

    - There are a number of ingredients

    identified as organic that containprocessed free glutamic acid (MSG).Autolyzed yeast, yeast extract, texturedsoy protein, and anything hydrolyzed areexamples.

    (1) Glutamic acid found in unadulteratedprotein does not cause adversereactions. To cause adverse reactions,the glutamic acid must have beenprocessed/manufactured or come fromprotein that has been fermented.
