The daughter of Bobby and Debra Allison concluded a successful softball career for the Sabres this spring. Katie is a shortstop with the ability to play any position on the field. With a long list of athletic and academic accolades, Katie walks away from South Meck with a sense of pride and great accomplishment. She was named the Female Athlete of the Year at South Meck and has been the team MVP for all four years of high school. Katie also was honored as an All-Conference Player. When asked about her favorite memory in softball, Katie didn’t point to a certain game or a specific play. She looked internally to her feelings and emotions in the game. “I love the people I have met through all my years of softball. I have made friends that I can call family. The memories I’ve made with these people are unforgettable.” When it came time to decide what to do for college, Katie studied her options and landed on a familiar place, Belmont Abbey. “My cousin is a great role model for me and she attended Belmont Abbey on a basketball scholarship, re- ceiving multiple awards. I want to follow her footsteps. Softball is my passion and I believe Belmont Abbey is the best college for me to keep my passion alive.” Make no mistake, Katie, a successful Student-athlete, will keep her first focus inside the classroom. “My academics always come first. I work very hard in the classroom receiving a 4.0 GPA while taking AP and Honors classes and playing two high school varsity sports and travel softball.” Katie hopes to explore different courses at Belmont Abbey before deciding on a specific area of study. “There are so many different jobs that I would like to do, but I haven’t found the one I want to live off of.” In addition to playing softball and winning inside the classroom, Katie also gives back to her community. “I’m very active in my church doing a lot of volunteer work, like vacation bible school, pine straw sales, and nativity scenes. I also help out at my old preschool with the kids. I love being around kids and making sure they always have a smile on there face. I always remind them they are smart, awesome, and will do big things.” We expect Katie will also do big things at Belmont Abbey. She has certainly left her mark on South Meck and now will focus on success at Belmont Abbey. The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Katie Allison for her dedication to success on and off the field. Best of luck, Kate, as you move into college! Zachary SchwartzMarvin Ridge High School tennis player Zachary Schwartz has been named the winner of the Prep Spotlight Athlete of the Week Award, Presented by Tutoring Club. The 18 year old senior son of Jeff and Marsi Schwartz began playing tennis at the age of 11. He has been a big part of the Mavericks Tennis success the last few years and was a member of the State Championship Team two years ago. Zachary has worked hard to become a starter on the team and last year he played a key starting role on the 2016 State Championship Team. Zachary uses his quickness to find success on the court. He never gives up on chasing down shots, attempting to frustrate his opponent.

Zachary has performed at an extremely high level in the classroom, recording a 4.7 grade point average. He will attend UNC-Chapel Hill next season and study Biology. Zachary works hard to maintain his commitment to being a STUDENT-athlete.

“I’m a student-athlete, in that order. Sometimes I do have to make sacrifices to be able to maintain good grades and play on the tennis team. Additionally, I am in classes with some of my teammates, and some players on my team actually tutor other players. We all want to see each other succeed in tennis and in academics. It definitely helps to have the support of my team.”

Zachary has also kept a focus on helping inside his community by assisting with students at East Elementary School with the Marvin Ridge National Honor Society. He also helps out each year with the Special Olympics Tennis Tournament. Congratulations to Zachary Schwartz, the winner of the Prep Spotlight Athlete of the Week Award, Presented by Tutoring Club.

Providence High School sophomore softball player Carolyn Bentley just wrapped up a successful season on the field for the Panthers. The daughter of Mark and Laura Bentley plays pitcher for her team and helped them to advance to the state tournament this spring. Carolyn has been the starting pitcher at Providence High School for her freshman and sophomore years. She has been awarded All Conference honors for her first two seasons. Carolyn led the SoMeck8 Conference this season with 146 strikeouts. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Carolyn Bentley to learn more about the 16 year old Student-ath-lete.

What are your top athletic accomplishments?“I won the Most Valuable Player Award for Providence Softball in 2016 and I was named to the 2016 All-Conference Team.”

What is your favorite athletic memory ? “My favorite memory is either when we played Butler this season at MARA or when we played at North Da-vidson last year in the playoffs. The Butler game was very exciting because I hit a grand slam and it was my first home run. The North Davidson game was really cool because I’d never played in front of such a big and excited crowd, it was like the whole town was there. Even though we ended up losing that game we were all proud of how well we played against them and we had a lot of fun on the bus ride home.”

What are your Summer Plans?“I am participating in the Powerade State Games, serving as an Assistant Coach of 12U USSSA Team and lifeguarding.”

Have you placed any thought into college yet?“Not so much but I’d probably like to go to either NC State or Appalachian State.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“I am a strong student with a 4.3. I take honors and AP classes at Providence.”

What is your favorite class?“My favorite subject is mathematics. I am also interested in History.”

Are you involved in any clubs?“I am a member of the Spanish Club and the Mosaic Club.”

Are you involved in any community service?“I volunteer at Elizabeth Lane Elementary where my mom works.”

Cuthbertson High School senior golfer Ray Dawood has been named the Union County Student-Athlete of the Week, Powered by Huntington Learning Center. The son of Ismail Dawood and Shemina Jiwa-Thomas played this season as the number one golfer for the Cavs. Ray has been an All-Conference golfer for three straight years. As a junior he was named team MVP and Conference Player of the Year. During the last two years, Ray has also run track for Cuthbertson High School.

Ray’s favorite shot of all time happened at a world famous course. “ The greatest shot I’ve hit was on hole 17 at Pebble Beach. There was a huge wind gust into the face, the Weather Channel recorded average gusts of 40 miles an hour that day. While only 160 yards, I took a 3 hybrid and flushed it. It flew over the pin, and because of the wind, it got pushed back and landed one foot from the hole. I then made the Birdie.”

Inside the classroom, Ray is a strong student with a 4.4 grade point average. He is a member of the Principal’s Advisory Council. Ray will attend UNC-Wilmington in the Fall to continue his education. Congratulations to Ray Dawood, the Union County Student-Athlete of the Week, Powered by Huntington Learning Center.

JOHN HATALA

Community Service Heroes AwardRecognizing Actions in Support of

Individuals, Community and the Environment

www.QueenCityOnline.com

Marvin Ridge High School senior tennis player John Hatala has been named the Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances Community Heroes Award Winner. The son of Bob and Joanna Hatala has been playing tennis since the age of seven, following right in the footsteps of three older siblings. John is a former NC State Doubles Champion and was a member of the 201 State Championship Team. That same year, he was named MVP of the State Championship.

John will graduate this month and move on to Fairfield University in Connecticut to play college tennis.

John has learned so many lessons playing tennis over the years. “Tennis has taught me to handle disappointment. This may seem odd, but observing how other players act when they lose, taught me a great deal. It’s simply impossible to win every match; being gracious in victory and defeat shows respect for your opponent. Losing also points out areas of your game that need work. You can either sulk in disappoint-ment or hit the court hard to make improvements. .

With a year round heavy commitment to tennis, John has still worked to record a 4. grade point average in the classroom with all honors and AP classes. He has also found the time to contribute back to the community through service to others.

“I share my passion for tennis with the Special Olympics community. For the last seven years, along with my family, I’ve had the opportunity to teach tennis to some amazing individuals. As a Special Olympics coach, I have helped run several special needs tournaments throughout North Carolina. Making special friends along the way, I’ve even had the privilege to be a Joy Prom escort.”

Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances salutes John Hatala for his continued commitment serving others in our community.
