In a football season that saw Wedding- ton advance all the way to the 3AA State Championship Game, Zach came through for his team week after week. In the state semifinal win over rival Cuthbertson, Zach scored two touchdowns to help the Warriors to a 24-21 win. Zach served as a team captain this season and started on offense at wide receiver, defense at cornerback and was also the special teams kick holder and punt returner. Zach truly did all that was asked by Coach Tim Carson. In spite of the key role played by Zach, he is quick to point directly to his team versus taking the spotlight for himself. “Our team this past year was extremely balanced. We didn’t have a single stand out star player that opposing teams could focus on and shut down. We had two capable quarterbacks in David Bayha and Grayson Willingham, along with four to five receivers contributing each game. If teams tried to shut down our passing offense, we had a combination of proven running backs led by 1,000 yard rusher Mitchel Carson.” The Warriors capped off their best season in history thanks to a lot of kids that would do whatever it took to better the team. Zach was very happy to play a part in the team’s success and will remember the season and the last four years forever. With football now over, the time has come for Zach to look forward into the future and make a few key decisions about college. With his outstanding grade point average and time spent in all Honors and AP classes, Zach certainly brings a lot to the table for the right college. He has also served as a Junior Marshall at Weddington, representative of his top 7.5% class ranking. Zach is a member of the Science National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Beta Club. He also serves as President of the Spanish Club. So where will all of this and his football tal- ents lead him? “I have two offers from Davidson College and Butler University. I also have a partial of- fer from Furman University and am receiving interest from James Madison University. As a student I’ve been accepted into the Honors Colleges at the University of South Carolina and the University of Alabama.” The South Charlotte Sports Report sends out our congratulations to Zach Goins for a job well done at Weddington High School. He says his favorite sport is basketball, “you can play and practice anytime and just about anywhere you want and you can do it with your friends.” His favorite sports memory is going to the DII 12U Nationals with the Charlotte Royals in Tidewater, VA. “We had the chance to play many new teams from many different states.”

Bennett’s favorite subject at Charlotte Latin School is Science. He enjoys performing experiments in class. Congratulations to Bennett Smith for being named the Quimby and Collins Orthodontics “Wired For Excellence” Award Winner.

Charlotte Catholic High School senior foot-ball player Braedon Mead closed out his Cougar football career with an appearance in the NCHSAA State Championship Game. The son of Mark and Delaine Mead excelled this year from his middle linebacker posi-tion. Braedon was named the Defensive MVP in the State Championship Game for Charlotte Catholic. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Braedon.

What position do you play in football and what is your role on the team?“My position in football is middle line-backer of a 4-3 defense. I am responsible

for calling the stunts, lineups, and coverages into the rest of the defense. In addition to this I also am responsible for calling the strength of the defense.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“My first athletic achievement is leading the team last year, my junior year, in tackles. I feel that this accomplishment really proved how the hard work and persistence pays off. As for my second accomplishment, it would have to be receiving All-Conference in the 4A So. Meck conference. This was an honor because my name was next to some of the best players in the state. For my final athletic accomplishment so far, I would have to say being elected captain would be the greatest. It was great a great honor for me because I was elected by my teammates, and it meant so much that they viewed me as a leader.”

What is your top sports memory?“My top sports memory actually comes from the State-semifinal round against Dudley high school. The reason this memory sticks out to me the most is because as a defense we were struggling so hard to stop them in the first half. There were no new formations or any adjustments made in the second half except for in our intensity. For the second half of football, the defensive unit held Dudley to zero points and only three first downs. Unfortunately we lost the game, but I will never forget how amazing we played as a unit that

night.”

Have you made plans for after high school?“My plans for after high school is hopefully attend The United States Naval Academy where I would play rugby or football before I get commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“In the classroom I perform exceptionally well. Just like in athletics, I like to push myself as hard as I can with my course schedule. This year I am taking 5 AP courses and currently have a 4.27 GPA.”

What do you believe is your top academic achievement?“My top academic achievement would have to be receiving the Cougar Award for academic success for three years. This award is for high academic grades alone. This has been a success for me because it is a challenge balancing all extracurricular activities with school, and I am resilient in my work.”

CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC ALUMNI BASKETBALL EVENT

The Charlotte Cath-olic High School Alumni Association hosted its annual holiday Alumni Basketball Tournament December 26 and 27, 2014 at CCHS. More than 100 alumni from five decades of graduat-ing classes participated in the event.

New to this year’s tournament was the “Spotlight Game” pitting

the 2014 CCHS varsity team against alumni. With only one sub on the alumni bench, the varsity players took the floor with a great deal of confidence. They quickly realized that the alumni still had it as the “old guys” took a substantial lead early in the game. In a game filled with lots of entertainment, plenty of friendly chatter as well as some tremendous shooting, the varsity pulled away with a 3-pointer by Senior Joe Scibelli at the buzzer to win 89-86.

The game was a family affair, with Carter McKinstry ‘14 guarding brother junior Justin McKinstry and alumni CJ Brodowicz ‘11 and Jack Brodowicz ‘12 against junior brother Josh Brodowicz. The alumni team also included Var-sity Boys’ Coach Mike King, JV Girls’ Coach Stephan Schachner ‘85, JV Girls’ Assistant Coach Ryan Kilmartin ‘12, Pete McArdle ‘87, Peter Grant ‘90 and CCHS parent/head referee Jon Riggsbee.

The CCHS Boys’ Varsity Team also includes sophomore Jimmy Abate, ju-niors Jacob Becks, Penn Conrad, Xander Gagnon, Jack Larkin, Sam Smith, Owen Winters and Nick Zuhosky along with seniors Chris Campion, Christian Chapman, Cole Perry and Joe Scibelli.

The CCHS Alumni Association was founded in 1987 to provide social, spir-itual and educational enrichment for alumni, students and friends of CCHS. Its mission is to provide a source of additional funding to enhance the aca-demic, spiritual and cultural missions of CCHS.

Congratulations to the 2018 Road Warriors Lacrosse Team for being named the Sport Clips Team of the Week. The Road Warriors won the Palmetto Classic Tourna-ment in November and qualified to go to the Dick’s Na-tional Tournament of Champions in Florida 12/28-12/31.

The team consists of boys from Marvin Ridge, Wedding-ton, Cuthbertson, Parkwood, Charlotte Latin and Char-lotte Christian.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH CHRISTIAN CHAPMAN

Charlotte Catholic High School senior Christian Chapman has enjoyed success as a Cougar Student-athlete. Christian, the 17 year old son of Rick and Judy Chapman, works hard on the basketball court and inside the classroom to achieve success. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Christian .

What are your top three sports memories“Last year while playing for Catholic, I made a buzzer beater shot against Harding. With 6 seconds left they tied it up, and after inbounding the ball it came right back to me after our point guard Josh Brodowicz was trapped. I dribbled up the court and made a turn around shot from the elbow to put us up by 2 with 1 second left.”

“In 8th grade I played in the Shamrock Tournament with Holy Trinity. We made it to the championship game and with 30 seconds left we were up by two. I blocked someone’s shot who was driving down the middle and sprinted back on the fast break. Matthew Naumoff threw me an alley-oop lay-up from half court to secure the game. The crowd went insane, and I was awarded the MVP Joe Mosca Award and got a piece of the net after cutting it down.”

“Aside from basketball, I am also an avid golfer. Two spring breaks ago, I was down in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and had the amazing opportunity to play TPC Sawgrass: the Stadium and Valley course. On the famous 17th Par 3 Island Green, I hit a perfect Pitching Wedge and hit the flagstick on the first shot. Unluckily, it bounced 25 feet away, but I made the putt for birdie.”

How did your pre-season go on the court?“Over the summer I played travel team basketball for the Carolina Blue Streaks. We did fairly well and placed 3rd in the AYBA National Champion-ship held at the Carolina Courts in Indian Trail. Besides that, I played at the basketball court in my neighborhood at least every other day where I worked on my ball handling, shooting, and fitness.”

What are your college plans?“I have applied to Clemson University, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and Furman University. My number one choice is Clemson, but I still have yet to fully decide. I’m planning to double major in Economics (or Engineering) and Business.”

What are your goals for the 2014-2015 basketball season?“My number one goal for the 2014-2015 season is for our team to go to the state playoffs. Last year when I was on varsity, we lost in the first round of conference playoffs and didn’t play another game after that. I want my fel-low seniors and my legacy to be earning a winning season and having the opportunity to go far in state playoffs.”

What has to happen for the Cougars to have a strong season?“Our main focus has to be on defense. We know we aren’t the biggest team, and our opponents know that too. We need to use that to our advantage and play our heart out every single game and catch them off guard. If we play like that on defense, then the offense will come naturally.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“I have a 4.36 GPA and am in the top 10% of the 2015 class. I am also a mem-ber of the National Honor Society and Latin Honor Society and President of the Young Republicans Club.”

Marvin Ridge High School senior cheer-leader Hannah Schott is about to close out an outstanding prep cheerleading career for the Mavericks. The daughter of Derek and Susan Schott began cheering at the age of seven and has never stopped in her pursuit of excellence. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Hannah to learn more.

When did you begin cheering and where?“I began cheering when I was 7 1/2 at Charlotte Allstars. I cheered there for 7 years and then when I was 15 I started cheering at Cheer Extreme Allstars (CEA), located in Kernersville, NC. I cheered at CEA for 2 years. I stopped competitive cheer to focus on school this past year.”

What is your favorite memory as a cheerleader?“My favorite memories as a cheerleader would have to be winning the 2011 and 2013 North Carolina States as well as winning the 2013 World Cheerleading Championships. I won states as a freshman and junior on the Marvin Ridge High School Varsity Cheerleading team. MRHSVC competed against all the teams in our division in North Carolina. I won the 2013 World Cheerleading Championship with my competitive team, Senior Elite my sophomore year. Senior Elite competed against the most prestigious all-girl teams in the World at the Wide World of Sports Complex in late April.”

Are you a “tumbler” also?“I am a level 5 tumbler (the highest level).” Do you participate in any other sports?“Prior to cheerleading, I was a figure skater (age 2-7).”

What is the feeling when the football stadium or basketball gym is packed at home and you are on the track or floor?“The feeling when I am on the track or out on the basketball court is a feeling like no other. I am filled with mixed emotions; I am nervous about my perfor-mance and letting my teammates down. Once the game starts, however, my anxiety lessens and I am filled with excitement. Getting to interact with all the Maverick fans is a special experience that I have been blessed to have for the past 4 years. There is nothing better than cheering the Mavericks on to victory with my teammates.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “School is very important to me. I have taken all honors and AP classes through-out high school while managing cheering for the school, driving 2 hours to and from Kernersville, NC for my competitive cheerleading teams, my clubs, and coaching the Marvin Ridge Middle School Cheerleading teams. I am very active in the National Honors Society, BETA Club, and Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honors Society).”

What is your favorite subject?“My favorite subject is math.”

Have you made any college plans?“I will be attending Appalachian State University in the Fall and will be trying out for the cheerleading team in April. I will be majoring in Nursing and minor in Finance. My future goal is to become a Physical Therapist and one day own and run my own practice.”

Are you involved in any community service activities?“I am registered volunteer for PAWS, my local YMCA, and my church. Through-out high school I have had the opportunity to coach the middle school cheerlead-ing teams. I coached the 6th grade team my junior year and the 8th grade and competition team my senior year. This past November the middle school com-petition team competed at Cheersport and placed first as well as winning Grand Champions. Winning Grand Champions meant that the girls had the highest score out of all the middle school teams, rec teams, and high school teams.”

The 2nd Annual South Charlotte Sports Report Middle School Basketball Showcase was a rousing success this year. Seventy five top-level middle school basketball players competed on December 22nd and 23rd at Community House Middle School. The girls and boys each had their own day to show their skills. In addition to playing two showcase games, each player participated in a one hour workout with Accelerate Basketball which included measuring their vertical jumps and scores with the 94Fifty Basketball Dribble Test. Weddington High School girls coach Ryun Cook spoke to the girls about finding success in high school. Providence Day School boys coach Brian Fields shared both basketball and life advice with the boys on Tuesday.

South Charlotte Sports Report owner Tripp Roakes gave his popular “ABC” speech, advising all players to Avoid Bad Company and to love and thank their parents on a daily basis. A three point contest was held for both the boys and girls with 7th graders Ally Bigham and Luke Stan-kavage claiming top honors.

CAROLINE DENNEHY REMAINS FOCUSED ON HER GAME

Charlotte Christian School senior basketball player Caroline Dennehy has been playing basketball her entire life. As a four year varsity player for the Knights, Caroline is about to close out an outstanding prep career. Under first year head coach Luke Boythe, Caroline is averaging just under 13 points a game and con-necting on 44% of her three point shots. Caroline is a wonderful leader for her team and is known for challenging her teammates and herself to become the best they all can be.

Caroline is also an All-State discus and shot put athlete for Charlotte Christian. She has found great success participating in throwing events for the Knights.

Caroline lists her top three athletic accomplishments as being named a NCI-SAA 3A All-Conference & All-State Thrower, being named to the Charlotte Hoops Challenge & Bluffton Bobcat Classic First-Team All-Tournament Teams and be-ing named an All-Conference basketball performer.

“My best basketball memory from high school was probably beating South Meck at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge this year. We came into the game as an underdog with several starters injured. We overcame the obstacles presented to us, and pulled together to win in double overtime.”

With the current season now at the halfway point, Caroline has set her goals for the year.

“My goals for this basketball season are to win a Conference Championship and a State Championship. Also, I’m always striving to expand my game and grow together with my team.”

Caroline wants to play college basketball next season and hopes to be in posi-tion to commit to a team by the end of the season.

In addition to her success on the basketball court and in her throwing events, Caroline has worked hard to find success in the classroom.

“Academically, I am a Cum Laude Honors student and have maintained a 3.5 GPA while taking several challenging classes. My favorite class that I am taking this year would definitely have to be AP Psychology. I am a member of the Tri-M Music Honors Society and an officer in our Student Government Association.”

Caroline added, “I am also a member of the Youth International Club, which is a club similar to Young Life inside the Charlotte Christian Community. In ad-dition, I enjoy working basketball camps for younger children. This gives me the opportunity to encourage them and pass on things that I have learned.”

Caroline knows how important it is to be a successful Student-athlete.“Academics come before athletics. Basketball doesn’t last forever, and when

you are done playing the game, you always need something to fall back on. I think it is important to be a well-rounded individual.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Caroline Dennehy for her commit-ment to athletics and academics. Her approach has gained the respect of all of her teammates and coaches. Caroline will be a great success as she completes her journey through Charlotte Christian and beyond. Good luck Caroline.

The Weddington Middle School Swim Team has been named the Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances Community Heroes Award Winner. On Saturday, December 13th, before their fourth swim meet of the season, the Weddington Middle School Swim Team gathered to help the less fortunate in Union County.
