Saratoga Soundtrack Chorus Wins CompetitionSARATOGA – The Saratoga Soundtrack Chorus, under the direction of Nancy Faddegon, won first place in Division AA at the Sweet Adelines Region 16 competition in Syracuse on Saturday, April 28, scoring highest of mid-size (31 to 60 mem-bers) choruses, and placing Fourth in the overall competition. Region 16 boasts the largest membership in the worldwide or-ganization of women’s a cappella choruses, with approximately 1,500 singers in 34 chapters located in an area that stretches from Albany to Toronto. Did You Know? Highlighting, or up lighting, is a landscaping technique in which light from below is used to accent certain focal points in a landscape. In many instances, the light is used to illuminate a particularly impressive or unique plant. When highlighting, two or more spot light fixtures are placed at the base of a landscape component and pointed upward. While highlighting is most
commonly used to illuminate plants, it can be used to draw attention to other focal points of a landscape as well, includ-ing sculptures or other garden structures. Light fixtures are aimed away from observ-ers as a means to preventing glare, and oftentimes the fix-tures themselves are camou-flaged to maintain the natural beauty of the landscape.

Clean As A Whistle By Tresa EricksonWhether you’re at the beginning of garden season or near the end, you can always count on one thing: dirty tools. Here are some tips for keeping the tools you rely on each season in good condition for years to come.Hose ‘em down The easiest way to clean your gardening tools is to hose them down after each use, especially if they are covered in dust, mud or chemical residue. Depending upon how caked on the mud is, you might need a scraper. After you have finished hosing off the tools, make sure you give them ample time to dry. Don’t put them away wet. This could lead to rust and rot.Stick ‘em in sand If hosing doesn’t remove all of the dirt, sand will. Find a large bucket and fill it with dry sand. Then mix in some motor oil or vegetable oil until the sand is moist. Plunge your tools up and down in the sand to remove any remaining residue. Then wipe them off with a coarse cloth. If the season is over, you can leave your tools in the sand over the winter and give it plenty of time to work.Coat ‘em with oil Metal and wood require additional care. After cleaning metal tools, coat them lightly with a spray oil or an oily rag. This will help prevent rust and keep them in good working condition. If you have any tools with wooden handles, sand and wipe down the wood with linseed oil once a season to prevent it from drying out and rotting.Keep ‘em sharp Take time out to sharpen cutting tools, spades, shovels and trowels. Use a hone or whetstone for cutting tools and a file for spades, shovels and trowels. You can do much of the maintenance and cleaning of gardening tools yourself. On occasion, however, you might want to enlist the help of a professional with tasks such as sharpening or removing rust from a beloved tool.Even with the best of care, some of your gardening tools may not hold up. Usually this is due to inferior quality. Garden tools are like anything else. You get what you pay for, so buy the best you can afford and take the time to care for it.

One of the best ways to improve a home’s resale value is to address the landscape. Increasing a property’s curb appeal can be done in many ways, but a well-pruned lawn and garden gives buyers the impression that the sellers truly took the time to maintain the home and the surround-ing property.Unfortunately, many homeowners choose exotic plants when addressing their landscape. Though these plants can be appealing and make a property stand out, if the plants are not native to the region, they could be doing more harm than good. Instead of upgrading your property with exotic plants from a far away land, consider the following benefits of choosing native plants before addressing your landscape.* Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the native wildlife spent years and years evolving together, with each doing their part to ensure the other’s survival. But as devel-opment continued, local wildlife suffered because of lost food sources. The local wildlife needs
local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the survival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check.* Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers might find a yard filled with exotic plants to be visually stunning, but they might also see a good deal of work to maintain those plants. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner’s part to survive, while native plants have already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike.* Native plants might be a better investment. A native plant has evolved over the years to sur-vive in its given area. Local insect populations and fungal infections might be able to destroy an exotic plant, but a native plant has grown resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides and considerable attention from homeowners to survive such problems.Though homeowners might find exotic plants help their home stand out from their neighbors’, it’s important that homeowners recognize the environmental benefits of choosing local plants before making any decisions.

Top Tips To Make A Home Green (MS) -- A well-planned, high performance home costs less to operate -- and as importantly, high performance is the promise of premium resale value.
Sustainable components include energy-efficient heating, lighting, cooling and water systems, as well as the reduction of natural resources like wood. Clip this checklist as a preliminary guide for both you and your builder:
Location: Build for lifestyle convenience where you can walk, cycle, or take public transit.
Position: Consider north-south positioning to maximize use of the sun’s energy and heat.
Generate: Install solar panels and generator to offset public energy supply. Add a solar water heater.
Walls: Build with concrete. An award-winning wall system, advanced by Nudura, builds with pre-assembled forms, each
one stacked, reinforced, and then filled with concrete. Once locked together (like Lego) the system creates a solid, monolithic concrete wall. This method (www.nudura.com) has shown to deliver energy savings of up to 70 percent and delivers a building envelope up to three times more sound resistant, four times more fire resistant, and nine times stronger.
Materials: Premium green choices should include low- and zero-VOC (volatile or-ganic compound) paints and sealants, plus high-perfor-mance windows, roofing and flooring.
Landscaping: Design your gardens for low use of wa-ter and pesticides. Plan with drought-resistant native plants, perennial groundcov-ers, plus flowers and shady canopy trees.

Hiring A Lawncare Professional Many homeowners hire a lawncare professional to tend to their lawns and gardens. To hire a quality service or individual, homeowners need to do a little homework.
* Compare prices. Professional landscapers offer an array of services and, as a result, those services vary in cost. Ask neighbors and friends what they pay for routine maintenance and any other special services. Get recommendations for companies that do work you admire.
* Interview prospective companies. Set up appointments or price quotes from three different lawncare services. Compare the offerings and the prices. Ask questions about whether pric-ing is “per week” or “per cut.” Determine if services such as edging, blowing away debris, trimming, and clean-up are in-cluded.
* Find out about extras. Some services will offer packages for spring and fall clean-up, and homeowners should inquire about any special offers during the initial comparison stage.
* Who does the work? A company may farm out work to other landscapers. Figure out who will be arriving each week and base decisions accordingly.

Did you know? Ecoscaping is a growing trend among homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and landscapes but want to do so in a way that’s environmentally friendly. Integrating both landscape architecture and spatial planning with environmental science, ecoscaping is meant to help home-owners create a sustainable and eco-friendly landscape design. It’s natural to assume that ecoscap-ing includes looking for ways to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, but there are many additional ways homeowners can embrace ecoscaping. This includes removing or refusing to plant invasive plants that are difficult to control because they are from different eco-systems and can threaten local wildlife and existing plants. Instead of choosing exotic plants that aren’t native to the area, choose native plants that are accustomed to the local climate. Another way to em-brace ecoscaping is to develop a planting strategy wherein plants are planted in beneficial growing conditions that can eliminate the need for chemi-cal fertilizers and excessive watering.

Riding Mowers Can Make Lawn Care More Manageable Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn.Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human
power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most af-fordable.Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these fea-tures, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding
mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn, and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun.A riding mower’s cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor’s cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other land-scaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for land-scapes that may have trees or planting beds.Cost is the one thing that may deter some homeowners from a riding mower. While a walk-behind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers gener-ally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and cup holders. However, some find that what riding mowers lack in affordability, they make up for in conve-nience. Plus buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two seasons. As with any lawn tool, it’s important to note that riding mowers are not toys and they should not be handled by children, nor should children be allowed to ride along while mowing.

Fun Facts About EarthwormsThere are more than 2,700 different types of earthworms residing on the planet. Earth-worms are often known to be workhorses in the garden, helping to aerate and fertil-ize the soil while filling it with nutrients. Earthworms recycle materials like dead leaves, decaying animals and feces so new plant seedlings can grow and have the pro-cess begin anew. Worms have been around for 120 million years -- one of the few species of insects that have stood the test of time. In just one acre of soil, there may be a million or more earthworms turning over the soil and chewing on organic matter. Without earth-worms, most plants would not thrive. Earthworms have mu-cous covering their bodies in order to stay moist. This helps them to breathe through their skin. You may have noticed that after it rains worms ap-pear on sidewalks and outside of their underground burrows. This is not because they are drowning underground, but because the environment is moist after it rains, making it more conducive for worms to breathe and move around to find mates. Normally the dry conditions above ground make them dry out and die. Earthworms can be remark-able creatures to watch. Con-trary to popular belief, worms do have a mouth and an op-posite end for waste removal that is not interchangeable.

Things To Consider Before Adding A Greenhouse Many men and women with a passion for gardening hope to one day have a greenhouse they can call their own. Though greenhouses are a great place for gardeners to hone their crafts, they can also be quite expensive, and there are some things gardeners should consider before building a greenhouse.
* Size: A greenhouse can be grandiose or small in stature. The size of a greenhouse depends on the gardener and the amount of property available. Larger greenhouses can be breathtaking, but the homeowner in you might not want a greenhouse to dominate your entire property. In addition, if your planting plans are relatively modest, a bigger greenhouse probably doesn’t make much sense.
* Cost: Greenhouses can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Price should not dictate which greenhouse you buy, so if you want a large one but can only afford a small one, then it might be best to keep saving money until you can afford one that meets your needs.
* Use: If you plan to use the greenhouse just during the standard gardening seasons, then you won’t need to heat it. However, most greenhouse owners want to use the greenhouse year-round, in which case you will need to heat the interior. In addition, those want to keep gardening
during the dog days of summer will have to ventilate the greenhouse. Consider the use and the potential cost a year-round greenhouse before making your decision.
* Location: The greenhouse will need to be in a place on the property that gets lots of sun. Be-fore buying or building a greenhouse, choose an area on the property where plants will thrive. If that area is currently used for something else, ask yourself and those who share the home with you if converting that part of the property to a greenhouse is something they can all live with. You don’t want the greenhouse to be a burden or negatively impact your family’s quality of life.

It looks like summer has arrived. What a joy this warm stretch has been. Our gardens have been playing catch up after the wet spell a couple of weeks ago. My wife and I managed to finally get the veggies all planted the weekend after Memorial Day.
Along with hot summer weather come the fungal diseases. Most of us are familiar with powdery mildew and black spot. Anyone who’s grown phlox, melons, squash or beans has probably seen powdery mildew. A plant under attack from this common fungal disease will exhibit misshapen leaves that seem to be coated with white powder. Black spot, another fungal disease, causes black spots (logically enough) to appear on the leaves followed by a gradual yellowing of the leaf. Black spot is very common on roses. These diseases start out as tiny spores present in the soil or on the stem of the dormant plant. When conditions be-come right, they incubate and develop into a growing organism. Once these fungal diseases take hold, you’ll have no option but to spray with a fungicide or, in extreme cases, remove the infected plant. Fortunately, there are preventive measures that you can take to keep fungal diseases from taking hold in your garden.
We can get a clue how to avoid fungal diseases by thinking about one that we humans are susceptible to: Athlete’s Foot. We know that if we constantly wear damp, dirty sneakers, we increase the chances that we’ll get a case of Athlete’s Foot. We avoid Athlete’s Foot by drying our shoes between use, and we always (at least I hope you do) put on clean socks before we put our sneakers on. The tactics we use to prevent the spores of Athlete’s Foot from taking hold are quite similar to how we can prevent powdery mildew and other fungal diseases from getting a “toe hold’ in our flower and vegetable gardens.
Good garden hygiene. First, avoid working in your gardens when the plants are wet. When you handle wet plants, you may be spreading the spores of fungal diseases from plant to plant increasing the chances that they will find a plant or location where conditions are favorable. Wait until the plants have dried completely before you handle them. If you are pruning plants that are susceptible to these diseases (like roses), clean the blades of your pruners with chlorine bleach as you move from plant to plant. This will help to prevent the spread of diseases.
Keep your gardens well weeded. Weeds may play host to a disease that won’t affect them but your garden plants may not be so lucky. Weeds are also a good place for insect pest to hide out.
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, try not to wet the leaves of your plants when wa-tering. DON”T SPRAY THEM WITH WATER! This spring, our garden has already been subjected to too much damp weather. When you wet the leaves, you’re creating the soggy condition that fungal diseases love (and your plants hate). Give them a break and buy a watering wand so you can soak the soil while wetting the leaves as little as possible. To me, spraying leaves and flowers is like intentionally putting on damp, dirty socks. I know you’ve all seen those commercials on TV showing folks, who supposedly know better, misting down the flowers. It IS picturesque but it’s one of the worst things you can do to your garden plants. Some houseplants benefit from misting in the dry winter home but it is a practice that is best avoided in the outdoor garden. In addition to promoting fungal diseases, spraying your plants with water washes away the pollen. Once this happens, the plant has no use for the flower and aborts it. What this means to you is that, if you make a practice of spraying your plants with water, the flowers won’t last very long and, in the case of vegetables, you won’t get much fruit. Did you really do all that work planting just to sabotage your own effort by spray watering.
Those who read me regularly know that I feel strongly about this, so remember: when it gets hot, you may need to go soak your head but your plants need to enjoy the dry heat as much as you’ll let them. Besides, plants absorb water through their roots, not the leaves and flowers. Think about it; if you were out in the desert about to die from thirst and I came along with a nice cold glass of water. What would you want me to do with it? Give it to you to drink or throw it in your face. Stop being mean to your gardens and don’t spray your plants with water. Give them a nice cool drink instead. Thanks for the read.
