The 2011 Formula One World Championship may only be six races old, but the Canadian Grand Prix looms as an important milestone in the chase for Sebastian Vettel.

Having taken his fifth victory of the season two weeks ago in Monaco, Vettel now holds an imposing 58 point lead over his nearest rival Lewis Hamilton.

While the title is far from won yet, considering there are as many as 13 races and 325 points still available (pending the rescheduling of the Bahrain Grand Prix), the chances of stopping Vettel’s charge towards back-to-back titles will look decreasingly likely if he can’t be beaten this weekend.

The Canadian Grand Prix marks the beginning of a very busy period of races, with five events to be run between now and the end of July. By contrast, only six races have been completed since the championship kicked off at Albert Park in March.

While the spread of races has clearly helped McLaren’s fightback from a troubled pre-season testing program, there’s no place to hide from here on in.

By all accounts, the characteristics of the Montreal circuit should suit the McLaren - with long straights and relatively slow corners set to bring the Red Bull RB7 back towards the field.

For the sake of the championship, Hamilton certainly won’t be the only man hoping to see Vettel’s amazing run come to a close in Montreal.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes pilots Jenson Button and Lewis

Hamilton are confident of taking the fight to runaway championship leader Sebastian Vettel in Canada this weekend.

The Woking-based team has made significant inroads on its Red Bull Racing rivals in recent weeks, with Vettel being pushed all the way to the flag by Hamilton and Button in Barcelona and Monaco respectively.

According to Button, the MP4-26’s performance in Monaco was particularly encouraging - with the 2009 World Champion qualifying within 0.5s of Vettel, having been more than a second away one week earlier in Barcelona.

“There’s a real momentum within our team at the moment - I think we had a race car good enough to win in both Spain and Monaco,” says Button, who finished third in the Monaco race.

“With a little improvement to our qualifying, I think we

can start to dictate race pace, which was something we were briefly able to show at both of the last two races.

“I’m still very pleased with my performance in Monte Carlo. It wasn’t a win, but it was nice to lead the race and to be able to pull away comfortably.

“Even if the result didn’t match it, that sort of thing is always nice to keep at the back of your mind.”

Hamilton, who took his first ever Formula One race victory in Montreal in 2007, enters this weekend’s race as the reigning Canadian Grand Prix winner, and is also confident of his chances.

“I’ve always got on really well with the track, the layout seems to suit my driving style, and I won there last year from

pole position,” says Hamilton.“Our car should be well

suited to this track; we have a great engine, the best KERS Hybrid system in the sport and excellent traction out of slow corners.”

Hamilton will be keen to bounce back from a shocking Monaco weekend, which saw the 26-year-old penalised for jumping a chicane in qualifying, before being handed further penalties for collisions with Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado during the race.

A post-race outburst directed at the race stewards, which included Hamilton joking that he was being picked on due to his skin colour, concluded a horror Monaco weekend for the 2008 World Champion.

TRACK DETAILS

The long straights of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve de-mand an efficient low downforce aero package and a strong engine that’s high on top end horsepower while the slow hairpins and tight corners require stability under braking and good traction throughout the turns. Approximately 55% of the lap is spent at full power.

Sector One starts on the short pit straight. During the race this will be the first of the two DRS activation zones and speeds will peak at around 300kph at the end of the straight. T1 is the start of a spoon-profiled corner that demands a smooth engine setting that must be maintained throughout the turn. Engine revs will be at approx 11,000rpm for five seconds through this turn, the longest consistently low rev setting of the lap, before a short sprint to turn three; a relatively open chicane taken in third gear. Drivers pass into the second sector just before turn six, a 90° left hander.

Sector two takes in the relatively stop-start ‘complex’ of the left hander of turn six and flick to turn seven and

then a short straight leading to turns eight and nine, a right handed chicane that requires drivers to lift off the throttle and shift down to second before getting immediately back on the power for the straight lead-ing to the hairpin. This is the longest sector in time and therefore more time can be lost or won.

Sector three starts just before turn 10 and the Epin-gle, or hairpin. Cars brake down to 58kph for this turn before starting on the Droit du Casino straight. Engine maps will be created to give drivers good traction and responsiveness on the entry to the hairpin, but also good acceleration away from it since this is the long-est straight on the circuit at 1,064m, and the second DRS activation zone. Drivers will accelerate through the gears to reach around 320kph in qualifying and 305kph during the race just before the braking for turn 13, another chicane that has the ignominious moniker ‘Wall of Champions’ on account of the proximity of the wall on the exit. Stability under braking going into this chicane is key.

Round 2 – Malaysia

I think we’re looking at a Lewis Hamilton weekend in Montreal, I really do. This weekend is about

Hamilton sending a message that, in the rise and rise of Sebastian Vettel, he still has a great deal to offer. He’ll also be keen to put to bed the controversy that occurred during and after the race at Monaco.

The track layout should suit the McLaren a bit more than the Red Bull. McLaren have been closing the gap, and the Montreal circuit should help even up the equation.

The really confounding aspect of the Red Bull/McLaren battle this year has been the way the speed gap between the teams shrinks between qualifying and the race. Our (One HD) correspondent James Allen has been tackling the issue of why the gap changes, and will be giving us his thoughts before this weekend’s race.

You can tell by some of (McLaren team principal) Martin Whitmarsh’s comments that they feel they’ve made some real progress... ok, on qualifying day they might not be able to extract the same pace as Red Bull, but as a rule, they’re a lot calmer heading into the race. They know that it comes back to them on Sundays, and I think it’s terrific they’ve been able to do that.

Sebastian (Vettel) has been especially impressive in qualifying - we’re seeing a situation where, and (Red Bull designer) Adrian Newey reflected this in our Monaco broadcast, Mark Webber is still getting comfortable with the Pirelli tyres in certain situations, whereas Sebastian has absolutely clicked with the tyres and the way they behave. So I’m looking forward to seeing Mark in that position as well. Maybe this track will be good for him in that sense.

The great unknown in Canada is the double DRS zone. Obviously the rule has required some tweaking throughout the year. The zone wasn’t really effective enough in Melbourne, and then we’ve also seen some situations where it has appeared all too easy. As long as they’ve got the numbers right and have set the zones

such that the passing won’t look too ‘Mickey Mouse,’ then I think it’ll be fantastic.

Ferrari has targeted Canada to be in a stronger position, so we’re going to really get an indication of

where they’re at and how much progress they’ve made. I really hope they’ve made progress - I’d really like to see Alonso in a situation where he can absolutely mix it with Red Bull and McLaren. What he did in Monaco, along with Jenson (Button), was superb. I know the result didn’t quite shake out for them - but the red flag regulations really robbed us of a ripper finish there.

The thing for me is just Alonso’s tenacity. It’s almost like he’s fighting with one hand behind his back, and he’s still giving 110%. When they get that car right it’ll be phenomenal.

We’re heading into a period now where the races will start coming thick and fast, which is going to make it even harder for Ferrari. They’ve got to look not just at the next race, but also what’s in the pipeline. You’ve got to feel for the blokes in the factory, because they’ll be going 100% trying to get everything that they need.

There’s a lot to look forward to this weekend that’s for sure. Even though we’ve got the bleary-eyed timeslot, I still think that the state of play is intriguing.

Essentially, you’ve got a young kid (Vettel) who is showing the establishment how special he is, and you’ve got other guys desperately wanting to show the Formula One fraternity that they’ve got something special to offer as well. It’s going to be an interesting weekend.

RED BULL RACING THE BAGMAN’S SAYSebastian Vettel and Red Bull

Racing will find themselves under more pressure than ever from Vodafone McLaren Merecedes this weekend.

The RB7 has proven the pace setter thus far, but the low-downforce specification aerodynamic package required for the Montreal layout could be all McLaren needs to leap-frog its rivals.

Vettel again drove masterfully in Monaco - holding out a charging Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button on older tyres prior to the red flag period.

The team was able to win the race despite a major pitstop malfunction that saw both cars delayed and Vettel given the wrong tyre compound.

Mark Webber again failed to match the pace of his team-mate in Monaco, and will again face a big fight just to make the podium this weekend.

McLAREN MERCEDES THE BAGMAN’S SAYThe Canadian Grand Prix is set

to be McLaren’s best chance of knocking off Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing since Lewis Hamilton’s triumph in China.

The circuit layout should mask the MP4-26’s apparent aerodynamic deficit to the RB7 - which was most apparent in Barcelona.

The use of two DRS zones may also play into the hands of McLaren, who have struggled against Red Bull in qualifying relative to the races.

Jenson Button meanwhile is riding a wave of confidence after his Monaco performance, which saw the 2009 World Champion take a rare front-row start before leading a large portion of the race.

By contrast, Lewis Hamilton will be determined to make amends for his disaster in Monte Carlo, which saw a swag of penalties and post-race condemnation.

FERRARI THE BAGMAN’S SAYThe Scuderia is still playing

catch-up after a sluggish start to the season, with Fernando Alonso wringing the 150th neck in Monaco, and being rewarded with a second place finish.

The double World Champion will again fancy his chances of a podium this weekend - with the circuit minimising the effect of the car’s aerodynamic weaknesses and allowing Alonso’s aggressive style to shine through.

Alonso drove one of his best races of the year in Montreal last season, and will be snapping at the heals of the Red Bulls and McLarens with the aid of more rear-wing and diffuser upgrades this weekend.

Team-mate Felipe Massa meanwhile continues to struggle - crashing in Monaco after coming off second best in a scrap with the aggressive Hamilton.

Massa has now not scored points since China, and will need a highly chaotic race to be thought of as a podium contender.

MERCEDES THE BAGMAN’S SAYMercedes GP had been the coming

team in the championship prior to Monaco, with Nico Rosberg in particular starting to extract some real speed from the W02.

Failing to score points in Monte Carlo was no doubt a big surprise to the Brackley-based crew - with both cars chewing through the super-soft compound tyre at an alarming rate in the race.

Thankfully for the team, the form shown in Monaco is unlikely to translate to Montreal, where the super-soft will not be in use, and the aerodynamic requirements are very different.

While unlikely to see the podium, both Rosberg and team-mate Michael Schumacher will be expecting strong points scoring finishes this weekend.

The Mercedes engines and KERS units are among the best in the field, and will play into the German drivers’ hands on the circuit’s long straights.

RENAULT THE BAGMAN’S SAYVitaly Petrov will be back in action

this weekend, despite his nasty red flag-inducing crash at the Louis Chiron Chicane in Monaco.

The Russian, and his German team-mate Nick Heidfeld, will continue to battle in the bottom half of the top 10 this weekend - with the team’s podiums in the opening two races of the season now distant memories.

Lotus Renault has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, with Group Lotus pledging to appeal the court decision allowing Team Lotus to continue to use the Lotus name, amidst wild rumours that the black and gold team is struggling to pay its bills.

More positive news is the decision by team owners Genii Capital to ramp-up the team’s simulator facilities - an area where the team has fallen behind the lead contenders.

Meanwhile, Lotus Renault GP will bring yet another new front-wing to the track this weekend, as well as the obligotory low-downforce, single-plane, rear-wing.

head into Canada off the back of their best performance of the season in Monaco - with the Brazilian handing the once dominant squad their first points of 2011.

Team-mate Pastor Maldonado had been one of the stars of the weekend prior to a late-race collision with Lewis Hamilton - having made Q3 for the second time in succession.

With Maldonado not having visited the Montreal circuit previously, expecting the 2010 GP2 Champion to score his first ever Formula One points this weekend may be a tall order.

Despite its modest size, the Williams team has worked hard on its low-downforce aerodynamic package, and will run new front-wings, brake ducts and barge boards in Montreal, in addition to a modified diffuser and a low-drag rear wing.

Any points finish remains a great result for this team.

FORCE INDIA THE BAGMAN’S SAYLook for Force India to arrest its

slide this weekend.The Vijay Mallya-owned squad

has traditionally performed strongly on low-downforce circuits - helped in part by its Mercedes engine and KERS package.

Adrian Sutil is refusing to be distracted by speculation over his off-track incident with a Lotus Renault official in China, and heads to Canada after a strong seventh place performance in Monaco.

The result signified the team’s first points finish since the Malaysian Grand Prix in early April, and a much needed boost heading into a busy period of races.

For the first time this season, Paul di Resta looked like a genuine rookie in Monaco - tripping over both Jaime Alguersuari and Jerome D’Ambrosio during the race.

Di Resta and Sutil should both be considered a chance of sneaking into Q3 and the points this weekend.

Sergio Perez will return to the cockpit this weekend after a big accident in Monaco - with the Mexican having crashed out of the event on Saturday after impressively making Q3.

Coming off the back of his first-ever Formula One points in Barcelona, the crash happened at a particularly bad time for the Mexican. Returning to Q3 this weekend will be a seriously good performance.

Team-mate Kamui Kobayashi is having a stellar season - picking up a fifth place in Monaco after a clever one-stop strategy.

With the Sauber continuing to prove easy on its tyres, and being reknowned for aerodynamic effeciency, the Japanese driver should once again be somewhere in the lower half of the top 10 in qualifying and the race this weekend.

TORO ROSSO THE BAGMAN’S SAYToro Rosso’s Monaco weekend

was effectively sunk on Saturday, when Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari qualified 17th and 20th respectively.

While Alguersuari crashed out in the melee that also involved Lewis Hamilton and Vitaly Petrov, Buemi took a 10th place finish - his third points scoring result of the season.

The still point-less Alguersuari is being put under significant pressure by Toro Rosso, which has Australian test driver Daniel Ricciardo waiting in the wings to replace the Spaniard.

While Buemi snuck into the points in Monaco, a repeat performance in Montreal may be a tall order, as the team faces a potentially stronger mid-field challenge from Force India and Williams.

LOTUS THE BAGMAN’S SAYWhile not threatening to score

points just yet, Team Lotus heads to the Canadian Grand Prix on a high after taking 13th and 14th place finishes in Monaco.

Yet to extract the best from its blown-diffuser package which was debuted at the Spanish Grand Prix, the two Lotus entries ran reliably throughout the race, and took advantage of the high attrition rate to take their best finishes of the season.

The qualifying battle between Heikki Kovalainen and team-mate Jarno Trulli was again spectacular in Monaco - with the Finn edging the Italian veteran by just 0.042s.

A cracking start saw Trulli get his revenge in the race however.

Once again, the finishing positions of the Lotus drivers in Canada will be determined by the fortunes of others, rather than their own speed.

HRT THE BAGMAN’S SAYThe Hispania team will enter the

Canadian Grand Prix hoping to emulate its double-finish in Monaco.

Tonio Liuzzi and team-mate Narain Karthikeyan took 16th and 17th in Monte Carlo, some three and four laps down respectively, after a disastrous Saturday that saw neither car able to set a time in qualifying.

By contrast to last season, where the team ran the same aerodynamic package at all of the circuits, Hispania will once again bring new parts to Montreal.

The Spanish-owned squad will again have only Virgin Racing to play with at the tail of the field this weekend.

“I’ve driven the track on the simulator and it’s one heck of a ride. Like in Monaco, the barriers are very close to the circuit so it will be another challenge, as will the two DRS zones. I’m arriving early to acclimatise and because there are a lot of great opportunities to do some pre-race training.”

VIRGIN THE BAGMAN’S SAYVirgin Racing has had an

interesting two weeks since leaving Monte Carlo, with news emerging that the second-year squad has parted ways with technical director Nick Wirth and his Wirth Research organisation.

Now looking for a new home base and development direction, rumoured to be under the instruction of former Renault F1 engineer Pat Symonds, short-term form is unlikely to be boosted by the changes.

Timo Glock has shown impressive form in Montreal in previous years, while team-mate Jerome D’Ambrosio will have his first run on the waterside circuit.

Qualifying and finishing ahead of the Hispanias is the team’s only realistic goal.
