Speaking of college games- what can I say about Tech besides “D’oh!”? Well, not much. Stupid bugs... I caught a story about a Tennes- see man who claims to have bro- ken the Guinness World Record for playing “Grand Theft Auto IV” while he was raising money for the swimming team he coaches. The 19 year old played the game for some 55 hours- well past the “record” of 40 hours, 20 min- utes set by a man from India (who we can probably safely assume lives in his parents’ basement, or whatever the Indian equivalent of that is). It’s Monday as I write this, and the high today hit 41. I think. That’s the warmest it’s been since New Year’s Eve. And I ache. We had some very light snow last Thursday night, but nothing particularly impressive. It was still on the ground in places this after- noon when I came home, though- that’s how freaking cold it is here! Friday morning at work, there were all of four of us there, and I asked one of the guys to open up the paint shop for me so I could grab some materials that I needed (not knowing who’d actually show that day- since it was something like 8:30 and we were the only ones there. Evidently, everyone else was iced in, or something- one bad thing about living less than two miles from work, I guess). Anyway, we were pushing this big rack of painted plastic across the parking lot and got to the little hill going up into the shop where I do most of my work. Doug said “on three: one, two, three” and I planted my foot to push. Can you guess what happened? Yep. Bam! Down on both knees. He asked if he’d been to Sa- vannah Smiles, and the man yelled “NO!” The Officer then pointed to the smiley faced stamp, and the man dropped his head and said “Yeah, I been there.” He was ar- rested for DUI, but couldn’t resist telling the Officers how he’d beat a DUI rap in Garden City. “I blew a .128, but I paid a lawyer $13,000 and a $5000 fine, but I beat it!” (Somewhere, a lawyer is grinning that evil grin and rubbing his hands together... “I’ll get $20,000 this time!”) ___________________________________ Continued on page B2 SPRINGFIELD CHRYSLER • DODGE • JEEP Highway 21 • Springfield 912-754-4000 • 1-800-642-2727 OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK www.SpringfieldChrysler.com “Effingham’s Best!”

The migration of waterfowl each year continues to be one of the most anticipated times for those who love to wing shoot. And millions of birds will move their way south through several flyways in order to meet their most impor-tant needs; food, protection from the elements, and a place to pro-duce their offspring. It is truly amazing how they are willing to travel hundreds of miles to find the most accommodating environment. It is also a bonus for those who live in one of these trav-el corridors; not only do you get to witness the spectacle of these birds in flight, but you also have the op-portunity to make some wonderful memories from the hunting blind. When you think about how far these birds travel, it is easy to ques-tion the distances they are willing to go for these necessities of life. I think that surely adequate provi-sion could be found a far shorter distance from home. And after all isn’t one unfrozen pond as good as the next one? And while some do stay closer to home, the majority

move well into areas that will never freeze completely over. When I think about this mass movement, I am reminded of the flight that many folks need to take. They have been lingering too long at a church where the spiritual food is shallow and has very little nutri-tional value. Their particular pond has been frozen for some time and they are not willing to sacrifice for a longer journey to where they can be adequately fed and where the environment is more suitable for their offspring. They have many different rea-sons for staying put and many of them are admirable, but the truth is, there is a far greater price to pay than the sacrifice of flight to a new pond. The price is a stunted growth for you and those little gos-lings that you are responsible for. And the price is also remaining at a place that does not represent what the Church of the living God was meant to represent. Am I advocating that you leave your church? I sure am if your fam-ily is starving for spiritual food and

is only getting Biblical crumbs or if it has become a place where only the frozen chosen meet on Sunday. The spiritual life of you and your family may depend on your willingness to see the adverse conditions that are coming and to make a courageous escape to a place where you both can flourish. Don’t let them down simply be-cause you are unwilling to make a longer trip.

By C. Edward Wilson Rebels in cruise control Last week when the Groves boy’s basketball team took on a very inspired Jenkins team, it seemed as though the Rebels were just gliding through the nights festivities. A team with that much talent and veteran experience can some-times afford to do that, but when you have a team which borders on greatness, then it should be-gin playing like it and or risk falling into the trap of thinking ‘nobody can beat us.’ On Friday night, Jenkins gave a valiant effort before letting victory slip out of its grasp to Groves on its home court. On Saturday night, once again Groves won a close game at Savannah High, 73-71. The Rebels must realize that giving the Blue Jackets a glimmer of hope is like leaving a filet mignon steak in front of a hungry dog … sooner or later that will take it. This Tuesday, the team took on Johnson, but that score wasn’t available at press time. It prob-ably wound up being another tight game. The Atomsmashers are looking for revenge and beating Groves would quench that thirst. Maybe the Rebels are just get-ting use to new head coach Jeff Grimes, or maybe they miss the yelling and screaming from de-parted Ty Randolph. Whatever the reason for its lackluster perfor-mance, hopefully something spe-cial will inspire the team to start playing at the level expected of such a special team. Senior forward Brandon Mo-bley stands a slim 6-foot-8 and has the potential to be another Brandon Rush, the forward from Kansas, who helped lead his team to an NCAA title and is now in the NBA. Amateur Athletic Union coach Terry Hines thinks that Mob-ley is the best shooter in the city at any position. Teammate Dominique Elliot stands a solid 6-foot-10 and acts as though he is waiting for his winning ticket from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He just strolls through the game and doesn’t work hard enough on the boards to give his team the advan-tage it should have. He knows he’s good, but needs to prove it day in

and day out. Senior Keenan Ready is play-ing probably his best basketball of his career. He hustles for loose balls and looks like a 12-year-old in an 18 year olds body. The 6-foot-6 swingman, according to his fa-ther is still working on getting his grades in order, so they can match his basketball skills. All Keenan has to do is call his sister Mia, who is a college sophomore. If D.J. Edwards, the senior football player and sixth-man of the team would just be quiet and stop arguing with everyone, this that wasted energy could be used elsewhere on the court. And now after that entire syn-opsis … the Rebels lead Region 3-AAAAA with an overall record of 15-1. Just imagine how good the team can be if it reaches deep down inside and determines its destiny by laying it all on the line. Groves finally broke the Top Ten Coaches Poll coming in as the tenth ranked team in the state. By the way, in the girl’s con-test, the Lady Rebels pulled out a thrilling and rather physical victory over the Lady Warriors of Jenkins. The game went into overtime with Groves squeezing out a 60-59 vic-tory. Coach Debra Puckett, probably one of the most underrated fe-male coaches in the area, told her team that if they played up to their potential, then they could beat any team in the area. It worked for the Jenkins game, then the follow-ing night they fell back into their old habits and got blown out by Savannah High, 41-29. Garden City• Officers were alerted around 5:30pm about a man who had been trespassing at Burger King on Hwy 21. They found the man walking close to Piggly Wiggly and picked him and returned him to the restaurant for identification. They pat searched him first, and found an unopened bottle of vod-ka in his front pants pocket. The man was already very intoxicated, and he explained to them it was his birthday. The manager of the Burger King said a customer had alerted her to the man, saying he was harassing the other custom-ers and “not acting right.” She said she asked him to leave, and he cursed her and told her to shut up. That’s when she left and called the Police. And that’s when the man walked to the corner of the restaurant dining room and peed on the floor. He was taken to jail for public intoxication. (Disgusting. And I’ll bet he’s allowed to vote!)• Around 6:20pm New Year’s Day, Officers found a Nissan Maxima that didn’t quite negotiate the curve on the exit ramp of west-

bound I-16 onto Chatham Park-way. The Maxima was found near the wood line with deep ruts in the mud leading from the off ramp to the car’s location. The man was still sitting behind the wheel. When asked where he was going, he replied “Rincon.” When asked where he was coming from, he replied “Rincon.” Regardless, he was taken to jail for DUI.• Just after 10pm, an Officer clocked a car at 62mph in the 45mph zone of Dean Forest Road. He made a traffic stop and noticed that the woman’s eyes were red, very bloodshot looking. She said she didn’t have a driver’s license, but she didn’t know why. The Of-ficer decided to have her submit to a field sobriety test. Before the “Follow my finger without mov-ing your head” test, the Officer asked if she wore contacts or had any problems with her vision. The woman stated that she didn’t have any problems, but “Everything is always blurry, though.” After fail-ing all of the tests, and I do mean all of them, she was arrested for DUI.• Just before 4am, an Officer made a traffic stop on a Chevy Malibu on Hwy 80 near Jackie’s Seafood. The two young ladies in the car appeared to have been to some type of function, and both appeared to have been drinking. The passenger said she was over 21, but a check of her license re-vealed she was underage. She was arrested for giving false iden-tity information to a Police Officer. The driver was arrested for driving while unlicensed.

It felt kind of like when you hit your funny bone- except really freaking hard. In both knees. At the same time. Then, my supervisor has a con-niption fit when I tell him about it, saying “well, why were you walk-ing across the parking lot? Didn’t you know there was ice?” Well, the answer was “no.” “It was under the snow that I’d already walked across with no problem,” I said. “Besides, I had no way of knowing whether or not anyone else was going to show up for work, and I wanted to make sure (the plastic) didn’t sit there another day without me being able

to work on it.” Seriously, I was getting grief from a guy who goes out to this perpetual mud puddle in the park-ing lot when it’s cold so he can test whether or not the ice on the sur-face is strong enough to hold him up... If you remember, before the foot-ball season started, I made some predictions regarding who’d make the playoffs. I was right on exactly three of those picks- all in the AFC: the Colts, Chargers and wild-card Ravens. I mean, I can take being wrong, but I can’t believe every single one of my NFC picks were wrong! Shelby had much better luck- she made two picks (the Eagles and Jets), and one of them is still playing...

I can’t believe that the Green Bay-Arizona game was the most exciting one this weekend. Even more so, I can’t believe the freak-ing Cardinals’ luck. Of course, I thought the Packers had a defense. Evidently, I was wrong...

Okay, time for another round of annoying commercials: There’s a “new” Geico commercial, retread-ing the “so easy a caveman can do it” shtick (old five years ago, or whenever it was the first time they ran) that’s as retarded as the other ones are (some of the Geico gecko commercials are okay); the Di-recTV ads with James Lipton (se-riously, I can’t be the only person who sees these and wants to crawl inside the TV and punch him in the head, can I? I mean, I appreci-

ate the fact that he can make fun of himself, but he’s. Just. So. Danged. Annoying. He’s like in Alex Trebek territory on the pompous jerk-o-meter); and the “Pepto” lady com-mercials (or whatever it is where the women in the airport wanna “share” their colon health reports. Ew.). I do like the Allstate commer-cials, though. I’d buy insurance from President Palmer or Pedro Cerrano. If I didn’t have pretty good insurance already...

Shelby’s determined she’s go-ing to take the day off to make sure she catches all the coverage should her Jets make the Super Bowl. I got no better pick for the AFC, so why not? In the NFC- I just don’t know. I mean, the Cardinals keep getting

so freaking lucky, it’s hard to pick against them. Kurt Warner, howev-er, makes it easy. He’s another one of those people that I just want to punch in the mouth on principle. How about a Jets... wow. I just realized that there’s not one team in the NFC I want to pick. I don’t like any of them...

I’m going to put the brakes on right there and wrap it up for this week. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from all around. And maybe even some sports, too. BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray: I’ve heard you refer to “bulle-tins” (“maybe there’s a bulletin on it”) in addressing repair problems. My question is this: If there is, in fact, a bulletin out on a repair, does that mean the dealership cannot (or ought not) charge full price for the repair? My Saturn wagon just had a transmission pressure-control sole-noid replaced, to the tune of $800. As I was writing out the check, I noticed a bulletin that the techni-cian had clipped to the bill, and I asked the serviceman if I could see it. He was hesitant, especially when I asked him for a copy of it. Is the bul-letin just an aid for the technician to follow, or is it a correction of a de-fect, and therefore something that should be covered under warranty? -- Bill

RAY: Good question, Bill. The bulle-tins we refer to are Technical Service Bulletins, also known as TSBs. They really just contain advice from the company to the mechanics who fix their cars.

TOM: For instance, a number of owners of older Honda CR-Vs started complaining about a strange howling noise underneath their cars when they made sharp turns. Someone, somewhere on the planet, figured out that the problem was caused by worn-out fluid in the cen-ter differential.

RAY: When Honda was convinced that it understood the problem and had a solution (it involved draining and replacing the differential fluid), it issued a TSB, which is the best way to make sure all Honda service people know about it.

TOM: Honda sends the TSBs directly to its dealerships. And other compa-nies -- namely, Mitchell and AllData -- supply the TSBs to subscribing in-dependent shops.

RAY: That way, when Joe Blowski brings his groaning CR-V into his dealer in East Armpit, the guy doesn’t have to scratch his head, hide in the bathroom for a couple of hours and then start from square one.

TOM: Right. And instead of spend-ing hours diagnosing (or misdiag-nosing) the problem, he can start by checking for TSBs on howling noises, and bingo! He finds what he’s looking for, and saves the customer time and money.

RAY: Whether customer Joe Blowski has to pay for the repair is a sepa-rate issue. That’s determined by how old the car is, whether it’s still under warranty and whether the dealer or manufacturer decides to earn good will by absorbing the cost (in other words, in most cases, dream on!).

TOM: You make a reasonable argu-ment that the fact that a problem is known and widespread enough for a TSB indicates that it resulted from a design or manufacturing defect. But manufacturers are not obligated to fix such defects for free unless they affect the safety of the vehicle, as de-termined by NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-tion). When that happens, it’s called a “recall.” Recall repairs are done for free.

RAY: But a TSB just indicates that there’s a known mechanical problem with a known solution. It’s there to facilitate repairs. It’s not a coupon for a free repair.

* * *Wait! Don’t buy another car with-out the mechanic’s checklist that’s included in Tom and Ray’s pamphlet “How to Buy a Great Used Car: Se-crets Only Your Mechanic Knows.” It will help you get a good used car and avoid the clunkers. Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Used Car, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

* * *If it ain’t broke, you won’t have to fix it! Order Tom and Ray’s pamphlet “Ten Ways You May Be Ruining Your Car Without Even Knowing It!” Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Ruin, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS EXPLAINED

Having seen a Frazer in “Auto Album,” many may remember that car. But now let’s look at a very ob-scure little car with a name that’s al-most the same. This was the Frazen, and there was a slight Kaiser-Frazer connection as well as in the name, because the Frazen used the en-gine and chassis of K-F’s new-for-’51 compact car, the Henry J (named for Henry J. Kaiser, founder of the K-F automotive conglomerate right af-ter the end of World War II). Since the Henry J was shelved by ‘55, one may wonder where the Ray Greene Company found new (or used) Hen-ry J. foundations to build on, since Frazen reportedly was available until 1962. Other engine-and-chassis units may have been adapted. At any rate, the Frazen could be bought com-pletely assembled or in kit form. The kit for the fiberglass body alone sold for $650, and this was one of the earliest fiberglass (or “fiberglas,” as it was also known) bodies produced -- two years ahead of Chevrolet’s Corvette, for example.

One wonders who exactly is guilty of designing the body for the Frazen, because the front end of this car was absolutely hideous, with a monstrous, toothy wrap-around grille that looked like some-thing from a child’s nightmare ... not to mention the bulging dome atop the hood (probably there to provide clearance for the upper parts of the engine).

Had it been better looking, the little Frazen might have fared a shred better sales-wise, but like

many other little cars of the ‘50s that tried to get off the ground, it was no match for the tough competition from Motor City (or “Motown,” as some musicians of the ‘60s like to call Detroit).

The production figure of the Fra-zen is unknown -- probably very few cars, plus some body kits.

***Tad Burness welcomes mail from

readers. His address is “Auto Album,” P.O. Box 247, Pacific Grove, CA 93950. Please enclose a stamped, self-ad-dressed envelope if you would like a re-ply. If you would like to be contacted by telephone, please include your phone number, with area code, in your reply.
