ABOUT US

Florida International University’s Aerospace Engineering Club (AEC) was established in Miami,

Florida in 2014, as an outlet for motivated students to apply theories taught throughout their

engineering curriculum. Since its inception, it has grown to be an organization with 55 registered

members. We recently gained AIAA affiliation and are planning to compete in the AIAA Design

Competition in addition to The SAE Aero Design competition in which we have traditionally

competed.

AEC strives to provide continual outreach to several local high schools and events such as the

annual Engineering Expo and The Maker Faire Miami. The annual Expo allows us to introduce

over 1,600 K-12 students to STEM projects and spark an interest in pursuing a STEM degree.

Without a doubt, much of the club’s success and growth is in large part due to the generous

donations from our past sponsors, and our dedicated members who have worked tirelessly to

continually push the club to greater heights.

SAE COMPETITIONS

The SAE Aero Design Competition is a real‐world design challenge designed to compress a typical

aircraft development program into one calendar year, taking participants through the system

engineering process of breaking down requirements. It exposes participants to the nuances of

conceptual design, manufacturing, system integration/test, and sell‐off through demonstration.

This years’ focus will be the Micro Class event, which is an all-electric class designed to help

students engage in trades between two potentially conflicting requirements, carrying the highest

payload fraction possible, while simultaneously pursuing the lowest empty weight possible

AIAA COMPETITIONS

The AIAA Design Competitions allow students to perform theoretical work and gain real-world

insight into the design process. Whether students are designing an aircraft, engine, or space

vehicle, they will go through all of the primary design steps involved in determining a solution to a

Request for Proposal (RFP). This includes determining a hypothetical solution, testing the

hypothesis, evaluating its effectiveness, possibly doing some cost analysis, and finally preparing a

report that will be submitted in response to the RFP. These responses are reviewed by experts in

the field who will provide constructive criticism to the students.

OUR DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

The development of each aircraft spans a period of a year. The first stage of development

begins during the summer semester where preliminary research is conducted to improve upon

previous aircraft and develop feasible concepts. Beginning in the fall semester we hold several

design meetings that encompass the finalizing of the design through thorough analysis and

validation. Once the design has been properly validated, manufacturing files are created and

sent off to local laser cutters. By the end of the fall semester and through the spring semester,

manufacturing is concluded. We immediately conduct preflight checks and conduct the first flight

test, while gradually increasing the payload weight. Near the end of the spring semester, the

plane is ready for competition.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Over the past few years, we have reached out to more than 12 schools through the Engineers on

Wheels program at FIU. Engineers on Wheels is an FIU College of Engineering program that

consists of engineering student organizations mentoring the future generation of STEM students

about the benefits of this career path. We have taught children the basics of airplane design and

aerodynamics through activities, such as building and launching bottle rockets.

We are also involved in the FIU Engineering Expo where we share our projects and passion to

influence local students visiting our campus to pursue engineering. In addition, we have

participated in The Maker Faire Miami for the past three years, representing FIU and showcasing

our aircraft to the maker community. Recently we volunteered our assistance for the first time to

Feeding South Florida. We lent a hand in helping get food and products to people in need and we

look forward to returning. We are excited for the opportunity to share, inspire and assist others in

our community to make a greater impact on others.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our club encourages students to not only develop their technical skills but also develop their

professional skills. We do so by offering Professional Development Workshops that enables them to

learn how to present themselves in a professional manner throughout their career. These

workshops assist with resume writing, interviewing skills, elevator pitches, and how to secure an

internship or full-time job. We also work hand in hand with other student professional chapters

such as, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Society of Women Engineers

(SWE).

Most of the members of our club have secured internships/jobs with well-known aerospace

companies like Lockheed Martin, GE Aviation, SpaceX, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, UTC, etc. They

have done so by attending National Conferences where they demonstrate their technical

capabilities from being involved with the club.

We are encouraging our members to attend national conferences such as, HEENAC, SHPE, SWE,

AIAA International Space Planes and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference, or AIAA

SPACE.

Lastly, we like to visit local Aerospace Companies, in which we can tour their facility, and allows

our members to get the chance to speak to engineers and get insight about the aerospace

industry.
