Physical Education FuturesDavid Kirk, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK

Can we imagine a future in which physical education inschools no longer exists?

In this controversial and powerful meditation on physicaleducation, David Kirk argues that a number of differentfutures are possible. Kirk argues that multi-activity, sport-based forms of physical education have been dominant inschools since the mid-twentieth century and that they havebeen highly resistant to change. The practice of physicaleducation has focused on the transmission of de-contextualised sport-techniques to large classes of childrenwho possess a range of interests and abilities, wherelearning rarely moves beyond introductory levels. Meanwhile, the academicization of physical education teacher educationsince the 1970s has left teachers less well prepared to teachthis programme than they were previously, suggesting thatthe futures of school physical education and physicaleducation teacher education are intertwined.

Kirk explores three future scenarios for physical education, arguing that the most likely short-term future is ‘more of thesame’. He makes an impassioned call for radical reform inthe longer-term, arguing that without it physical educationfaces extinction. No other book makes such bold use ofhistory to interrogate the present and future configurationsof the discipline, nor offers such a wide-ranging critique ofphysical culture and school physical education. This book isessential reading for all serious students and scholars ofphysical education and the history and theory of education.

Positive Youth Development Through SportEdited by Nicholas L. Holt, University of Alberta,Canada

Series: International Studies in Physical Education andYouth Sport

The first Positive Youth Development title to focus on therole of sport, this book brings together high profilecontributors from diverse disciplines to critically examine theways in which sport can be and has been used to promoteyouth development.

Young people are too frequently looked upon as problemswaiting to be solved. From the perspective of Positive YouthDevelopment (PYD), young people are understood toembody potential, awaiting development.

Involvement with sport provides a developmental contextthat has been associated with PYD, but negative outcomescan also arise from sport participation and school PE. Sportitself does not lead to PYD; rather, it is the manner in whichsport is structured and delivered to children that influencestheir development. Positive Youth Development ThroughSport fills a void in the literature by bringing together expertsfrom diverse disciplines to critically examine the ways inwhich sport can be and has been used to promote youthdevelopment.

Rethinking Gender and Youth SportEdited by Ian Wellard, Canterbury Christ ChurchUniversity, UK

Series: International Studies in Physical Education andYouth Sport

Much writing on gender and sport isfocused upon the negative impact ofgirls’ exclusion from the arena, suggesting by inference that currentpractice in sport and physicaleducation offers an uncomplicatedlypositive sport experience for boys, and that gender, in and of itself, offers a simple starting point forresearch into young people’sexperience of sport.

Rethinking Gender and Youth Sportarticulates certain themes which, it is

suggested, might contribute to broadening and furtheringdiscussion in the area of gender, youth sport and physicalactivity. This collection considers a number of themes relatingto gender in sport, including:

•the body

•competence, ability and school physical education

•cultural change and diversity

•gendered spaces

•human rights and well-being.

Authoritative writers have contributed thought provokingchapters which will prompt the reader to re-think the waysin which gender is understood within the context of youthsport.

Education, Disordered Eatingand Obesity DiscourseFat Fabrications

John Evans, Emma Rich, both at LoughboroughUniversity, UK, Brian Davies, Cardiff University, UK andRachel Allwood, Loughborough University, UK

Eating less, exercising more andlosing weight seem the obvioussolution for the oncoming ’obesityepidemic’. Rarely, however, isthought given to how thesemessages are interpreted andwhether they are in fact inherentlyhealthy.

Education, Disordered Eating andObesity Discourse investigates how’body centred talk’ about weight, fat, food and exercise is recycled inschools, enters educational

processes, and impacts on the identities and health of youngpeople. Drawing on the experiences of young women whohave developed eating disorders and research oninternational school curricula and the media, the authorschallenge the veracity, substance and merits of contemporary’obesity discourse’. By concentrating on previouslyunexplored aspects of the debate around weight and health,it is revealed how well-meaning advice can propel somechildren toward behaviour that seriously damages theirhealth.

This book is not only about ’eating disorders’ and the peopleaffected, but the effects of obesity discourse on everyone’shealth as it enters public policy, educational practice and thecultural fabric of our lives. It will interest students, teachers, doctors, health professionals and researchers concerned withobesity and weight issues.

The Masters AthleteUnderstanding the Role of Sport and Exercise inOptimizing Aging

Edited by Joseph Baker, York University, Canada, Sean Horton and Patricia Weir, both at University ofWindsor, Canada

Masters athletes are those that continue to train andcompete, typically at a high level, beyond the age of thirty-five and into middle and old age. As populations in theindustrialised world get older and governments becomeincreasingly keen to promote healthy aging and non-pharmacological interventions, the study of masters athletesenables us to better understand the benefits of, andmotivations for, life-long involvement in physical activity. Thisis the first book to draw together current research onmasters athletes.

The book examines the evidence that cognitive skills, motorskills and physiological capabilities can be maintained at ahigh level with advancing age, and that age related declineis slowed in athletes that continue to train and compete intheir later years. Including contributions from leadinginternational experts in physiology, motor behaviour, psychology, gerontology and medicine, the book exploreskey issues such as:

•motivation for involvement in sport and physical activity across the lifespan

•evidence of lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes

•the maintenance of performance with age.

Challenging conventional views of old age, and withimportant implications for policy and future research, thisbook is essential reading for students and practitionersworking in sport and exercise science, aging and publichealth, human development, and related disciplines.

Mental ToughnessThe Mindset Behind Sporting Achievement

Michael Sheard, Sport and Exercise Psychology, York StJohn University, UK

Mental toughness is one of the mostubiquitous terms used in sport - byathletes, coaches, owners, andspectators, and also by the print andbroadcast media - however, it is alsoone of the least understood terms. This book provides a definitive andreadable overview of the area, andtakes the reader to the frontiers ofmental toughness research.

The book introduces the historicalconceptual arguments behind mentaltoughness research, and looks at the

characteristics and development of mentally tough sportperformers. It suggests that mental toughness is apersonality style and mindset, presenting a case for itsinclusion within the positive psychological paradigm. Thebook also explores various measures of mental toughnessand their psychometric properties, and considers cultural andnational perspectives as well as the possibility of mentaltoughness heredity. Sheard exposes the development andmaintenance of mental toughness as a factor for successfulsport and life performance, and discusses the possibilities forfuture research on the subject.

Human PotentialExploring Techniques Used to Enhance HumanPerformance

David Vernon, Department of Applied Social Sciences,Canterbury Christ Church University, UK

Throughout time, people haveexplored the ways in which they canimprove some aspect of theirperformance. Such attempts are morevisible today, with many working togain an ‘edge’ on their performance, whether it is to learn a new language, improve memory or increase golfhandicaps. This book examines arange of techniques that are intendedto help improve some aspect ofperformance, and examines how wellthey are able to achieve this.

The various performance enhancing techniques available canbe divided into those where the individual remains passive(receiving a message, suggestion or stimulus) and thosewhere the individual needs to take a more active approach.Human Performance looks at a range of techniques withineach of these categories to provide the reader with a senseof the traditional as well as the more contemporaryapproaches used to enhance human performance. Thetechniques covered include hypnosis, sleep learning, subliminal training and audio and visual cortical entrainmentas well as mnemonics, meditation, speed-reading,biofeedback, neurofeedback and mental imagery practice.

This is the first time such a broad range of techniques hasbeen brought together to be assessed in terms ofeffectiveness. It will be useful to all psychology and sportsscience students, practicing psychologists, life coaches andanyone else interested in finding out about the effectivenessof performance enhancement techniques

The Ethics of Doping and Anti-DopingRedeeming the Soul of Sport?

Verner Møller, University of Aarhus, Denmark

Series: Ethics and Sport

With every positive drugs test the credibility and veracity ofmodern elite sport is diminished. In this radical and provocativecritique of current anti-doping policy and practice, Verner Møllerargues that the fight against doping – promoted as an initiativeto cleanse sport of cheats – is at heart nothing less than a battleto save sport from itself, located on the fault-line between thewill to purity and the will to win.

Drawing on extensive and detailed case studies of doping insport, and using a highly original blend of conceptual ideasfrom philosophy and sociology, Møller strongly criticises currentanti-doping regimes and challenges our commonly held ideasabout the nature of sport and the risks posed by drugs tohealth and fair play. He argues forcefully that we mustunderstand the precarious position of the athlete and that onlyby containing coaches, doctors and drug companies within theanti-doping regime can we hope to ever make progress on thismost important issue.

Written in a lively and engaging style, and skilfully blendingempirical case studies with cutting edge theory, this bookrepresents an important statement on the nature of sport, morality and modernity. It is important reading for all seriousstudents and scholars of the ethics, sociology and politics of sport.

Doping in SportGlobal Ethical Issues

Edited by Angela J. Schneider, The University ofWestern Ontario, Canada and Fan Hong, UniversityCollege Cork, Ireland

Series: Sport in the Global Society

This book considers ethicalarguments about performanceenhancing drugs in sport in a globalcontext. It examines:

• the forces that are bringing about the debate of ethical issues in performance enhancing drugs in sport

• the sources of ethical debates in different continents and countries

• the variation of ethical arguments in different cultural, political,

ideological and sports systems.

Whilst there has been a significant body of work that haslooked at the importance of ethical issues in performanceenhancing drugs in sport - there has been little, if any, consideration of the various ethical concepts in differentcountries and cultures involving sport. This is a majoromission. This book fills the gap and provides a thoroughreview and analysis of the ethical literature on performanceenhancing drugs in sport in the global society. It makes amajor contribution to the worldwide anti-doping campaignin sport.

A History of Drug Use in Sport:1876–1976Beyond Good and Evil

Paul Dimeo, University of Stirling, UK

This book offers a new history ofdrug use in sport. It argues that theidea of taking drugs to enhanceperformance has not always beenthe crisis or ‘evil’ we now think it is.Instead, the late nineteenth centurywas a time of some experimentationand innovation largely unhindered bytalk of cheating or health risks. Bythe interwar period, experiments hadbeen modernised in the newlaboratories of exercise physiologists.Still there was very little sense that

this was contrary to the ethics or spirit of sport. Sports, drugs and science were closely linked for over half a century.

The Second World War provided the impetus for bothincreased use of drugs and the emergence of an anti-dopingresponse. By the end of the 1950s a new framework ofethics was being imposed on the drugs question thatconstructed doping in highly emotive terms as an ‘evil’.Alongside this emerged the science and proceduralbureaucracy of testing. The years up to 1976 laid thefoundations for four decades of anti-doping. This bookoffers a detailed and critical understanding of who wasinvolved, what they were trying to achieve, why they setabout this task and the context in which they worked. Bydoing so, it reconsiders the classic dichotomy of ‘good anti-doping’ up against ‘evil doping’.

Winner of the 2007 Lord Aberdare Literary Prize for the bestbook in British sports history.
