Introducing our special guestWill Fraser

Will Fraser is a former Saracens player who had a hugely successful professional rugby career. Will joined the Saracens Academy in 2005, aged just 14 and went onto make 83 appearances for the club, winning the European & Premiership Double in 2015 - 2016.

Will was forced to end his playing career in 2017 following a neck injury but is now the Director of ‘The Saracens Way’, which runs workshops for organisations based on the core values that have made Saracens so successful.

A Welcome from the HeadteacherWelcome to our Sports Awards Ceremony – our annual celebration of the culture of sporting success and participation we have here at Denbigh. Encouraging and supporting our students in their sporting endeavours, whether that be participating in a lunch-time sports club or being selected for an England Development Squad, is central to the ethos of our school. Participation in sport brings with it benefits for young people in terms of their health and fitness and encourages self-confidence, determination and perseverance. This commitment to support our students, combined with their talent and enthusiasm, means that sport is a truly a strength of our school.

This strength has been recognised by us winning a ‘hat-trick’ of prestigious regional sporting awards this year. We were named ‘Secondary School of the Year’ at the Buckinghamshire & MK Sports Awards, which means that we are the best secondary school in Buckinghamshire for encouraging our students, particularly girls, to participate in school sport. The Award also recognised our innovative Sports Performance Programme, which provides our elite sports students with support and advice on how to balance their academic studies with training demands. This was followed by us winning ‘Secondary Sports Achiever of the Year’ at the MK Sports Awards, for the fourth time in five years, which is testament to our consistency. And finally, we received the ‘Secondary School of the Year’ Award at the MK School Sport Partnership Awards. It has been a remarkable year and tonight we will recognise those students who have brought so much success to themselves and the School as a whole.

So, to this evening’s ceremony, at which we will be celebrating those students who have shown the highest levels of talent and commitment when representing our School by awarding them their ‘Half’ or ‘Full‘ Colours. We will also award PE and Dance Curriculum Awards, which recognise those students who have excelled academically and those who have made an outstanding contribution to the subjects. Our ‘Players Player of the Year’ awards, as voted by their teammates, will also be presented along with awards from our successful Football Academy. All the students recognised today are listed in this Brochure along with the names of all the students who have regularly been members of our sports teams. The Brochure also records the 44 students who have achieved regional or national recognition this year in their sporting fields.

We are also aware that our students achieve in sports not offered by the School and with local clubs in general and again we do all we can to support them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff in our PE Faculty and from across the School who match the commitment of our students and always go the extra mile when encouraging, coaching and motivating them. Without them none of this success would have been possible.

Thank you for joining us today and helping to make this celebration truly special for all the students and staff.

Andy Squires, Headteacher
