Spring, my favourite time of the year. The days are getting warmer, the trees are blossoming and the

evenings are getting lighter - no more dark nights by 4pm! The only thing is the weather can be so changeable

at this time of year, one minute it can be freezing outside and the next day is bright and sunny. The month of

March is said to come in like a lion and out like a lamb and that certainly seems true this year with the strong,

cold winds and sleet/snow showers we’ve been having the last week.

My husband and I got married in late Spring, in May 2008 and we had showers on our wedding day and

ended up having our after ceremony photographs taken indoors (even against my new Mother-In-Law’s

wishes, but I didn’t want to get wet through!). Still we have some great photographs to look back on and it’s

the one thing you can’t plan for - the weather.

I would love to hear your ideas and plans for coping with the weather. Here’s hoping you all get some

sunshine on your big day.

Are you a Bridezilla or are you more relaxed in planning your wedding? When I got married, I was

not obsessed by every tiny detail, but I did do all the organising myself. However I did start to find that a lot of

family members, in particular my future Mother-in-Law, had very strong opinions on what they thought we

should have and who we should invite. The trouble is you don’t want to upset anyone, especially your new

side of the family, but then again, it’s your big day so why should you do something for someone else’s sake if

it’s not really something you like?

Maybe if a relative is paying for something, like the cake for example, then they should have a bit of

a say on who makes it or how it looks? That was one of my biggest problems! My future husband wanted his

Mum to make the wedding cake. She was very good and I had seen a few she had made before for birthdays

and christenings, but when she told me she could only do roses and lilies for the decoration, I was just a little

bit disappointed. I had already decided on a colour scheme of golds and yellows and I had set my heart on

having a bouquet of sunflowers, but she insisted that she couldn’t make these, and then decided to tell me

that the colours looked awful for cake displays! In the end we had to compromise and I settled for ivory roses

and yellow gerberas both on my cake and in my bouquet. Would you have insisted on what you wanted or

backed down just to keep the peace?

On the wedding day itself, my husband and his family had some photographs taken outside the

venue, while I had some taken of me and my bridesmaids in the room we were getting ready in. During the

ceremony the weather turned and it started to rain quite heavily. My new Mother-in-Law still wanted me to

have a photograph taken outside! At this point I did refuse!! No way was I standing outside, in the pouring

rain, just to get a photograph of me in my dress. She even told the photographer to make me have one, but

thankfully he had the sense to say it was the Bride & Groom’s decision.

Hopefully your day goes the way that you want it to. I know nothing

is perfect, but things do usually go according to plan and if there are any

hiccups, try to just take it in your stride. The one piece of advice I could give is

make sure to take five minutes to yourselves after the ceremony and just take

it all in - the day goes by so fast, you won’t believe it, so take time to make that

memory.

Barn

The Garden Barn

Haverhill, Suffolk

The Garden Barn venue is situated in the scenic hamlet of Little

Bradley in the Stour Valley on the Cambridgeshire/Suffolk border and is

easily within reach of Cambridge (nearly 19 miles away) and Bury St.

Edmunds (16 miles).

This 18th century building has been beautifully restored with all the

original timber beams giving a truly unique feel to this venue. If you are

looking for a traditional venue that is steeped in history, then this is the

perfect choice.

Mythe Barn

Sheepy Magna, Warwickshire

Situated near the market town of Atherstone, here you

are still close to the cities of Birmingham and Leicester. The

Mythe Barn has been restored in recent years and purposely

refitted with weddings in mind. Licenced for up to 150 guests,

you have the choice of 3 different settings too - The Oak Barn,

the Grain Store or the Gazebo.

There is also accommodation at the venue, with seven

bedrooms in the converted stables courtyard.

Crockwell Farm

Nr Daventry, Northamptonshire

Crockwell Farm is set in the glorious countryside of south

Northamptonshire and weddings are their speciality. The venue is

licensed for civil ceremonies and they also have a marquee that

can seat up to 200 guests.

The venue is located close to the M1 and M40, so is easily

accessible and also had award winning B&B accommodation.

They do not take bookings on consecutive days, which gives you

a more relaxed time to set-up the day before and carry on the

celebrations at breakfast the next day.

Milling Barn

Throcking, Hertfordshire

The Milling Barn at Bluntswood Hall is set in the tranquil countryside of

North Hertfordshire, on a family run farm. The venue is not only licensed for

ceremonies in their three buildings - The Milling Barn, The Oak Room and the

Dairy Barn, but also for their gardens and woodland, so you can hold your

wedding ceremony outside.

The venue can cater for up to 180 guests for a sit down meal and pride

themselves on their bespoke services.

Rothwell, Northamptonshire

I thought I would start a article to my magazine and take a look at various places and what they have to

offer for people that are planning their wedding, so what better place to start with than where I live now -

Rothwell, near Kettering, in Northamptonshire.

Rothwell is a historic market town and although there are no large stores here, the town certainly has a

lot to offer. Easily accessible via the A14 and is within convenient reach of Kettering (5 miles), Corby (10

miles) and Market Harborough (9 miles). So what does the town offer for any Brides and Grooms to be?

Firstly there is Holy Trinity Church which has to be the most prominent building

in the town. Dating from the 13th Century, the church is 173 feet long, making it the

longest church in Northamptonshire. Other churches in the town

include the Rothwell Methodist Church and St. Bernadette’s

RC Church. Although there are no actual Approved Venues in

Rothwell, there are still places where you could hold your

wedding party or reception. The Rothwell House Hotel has

over 20 en-suite bedrooms, which include some with four-poster

beds and a Bridal Suite, then there is also the Tresham Hall (at

the Rothwell Conservative Club) which can cater for up to 120

guests and has a sprung floor for you to dance the night away.

If you were looking for somewhere for your Hen Party or Stag Night then The

Old Bakehouse regularly holds special evenings such as ’Rat Pack’ nights and also

Mediterranean Nights with Greek Dancing - and they are quite memorable! There is

also Toro Steakhouse and they have a private dining room available for large parties

too. There are a number of Public Houses in the town as well, including The Red Lion

which has recently been refurbished and now

includes ‘The Old Barns In Bridge Street’ that can

also be hired out for private functions.

You may prefer Indian cuisine, so why not visit

the Taste of India restaurant with their wide range of

speciality dishes, or maybe you might prefer the

Turkish menu provided at The Old Bank restaurant instead or even more

exotic food at the Thai Garden restaurant.

With all of these facilities situated close together in the small town

centre, what more could you ask for than a large, central car park that is also

free to park in - perfect!

Rothwell also has a Bridal shop, where you can find a range of Bridal and bridesmaids dresses.

Something Special are stockists for Ronald Joyce, Sincerity Bridal and Alexia Designs plus many more. They

also stock a wide range of accessories, such as veils and headdresses so you are bound to find something to

suit your taste. As for the Mother of the Bride/Groom outfits, then look no further than Trudie Claire - and it is

only next door to the bridal shop!

Something Special Trudi Claire

The one thing Rothwell is not short of is Hairdressers - here you are spoilt for choice. Starting with John

Newman Hairdressing & Beauty that has 3 floors, with 2 floors dedicated to hairdressing and another floor

for their beauty treatments. John Newman is the third generation of the Newman family to be working in the

hairdressing business and they have built up a fine reputation and been part of the Rothwell community for

over 90 years.

Further down the road, in the Bakehouse Mews courtyard, you will find

Queens Hairdressing. There is a more

vintage meets modern style to this quaint

salon and they are also the recommended

salon of Rushton Hall, which is just 2.5 miles

down the road from here.

Other salons in Rothwell include Stylers and

R & R Hairdressing, both on Bridge Street

which is the main road through the town

centre, then a bit further down the road you

will find the On The Fringe salon too. Not forgetting the men in the town as well, you can find The Barbers

Shop and Cuts ‘N’ More too.

For your beauty requirements, as well as those services offered at the above hairdressers, there is also

The Parlour, where beauty therapist Laura will make you look and feel fantastic and the Pretty Woman nail &

beauty salon.

Looking for wedding stationary, then contact Wedding Paraphernalia for everything from elegant guest

books to bespoke invitations.

Finally if you are looking for a wedding gift then Black and Whites have a wide range of gifts and home

accessories or Newmans of Rothwell sell everything from greeting cards to balloons, children’s toys to silver

plated gifts.

So Rothwell may be a small town, but it has a big heart and a lot to offer - pay us a visit sometime!
