WELCOME TO THENAZARETH TRUST

it is with Great PleasUrethat i welcOMe yOU tO thesPrinG editiOn OF OUrnewsletter.

in my reflection, i also have asense of deep humbleness tohave been part of the long storyof the nazareth hospital; to haveparticipated in this generation'swork and service, and to havebeen a witness of the lord'sprovision and care in his ownhome town. it is with deepgratitude that i reflect on thecontribution of all those who havewalked with the hospital theselast few years.

i am grateful to our clinical, support and administrative staffwho care and serve on a dailybasis, and i am grateful also forthe work of our management andleadership teams - all who haveworked tirelessly and underconsiderable pressure to steerand develop the scope andquality of our hospital services.

it is true to say that some parts ofthe journey were not at all easy, and yet, if we stop for a momentand look back at where we aretoday and how far we have come,we can see the positive and far-reaching impact of all we havedone together in recent years.

it has also been a great privilegeto work with and serve our schoolof nursing.

this work, so unique in place, inaspiration and in achievement isa jewel in the crown of our work innazareth. it is the gatewaythrough which the young peopleof nazareth have walked throughfor 90 years in order to be

prepared for a life ofcompassionate and professionalservice.

it has been my great pleasure towork alongside the staff andleadership of the school, and, although the school's future isnot yet fixed and resolved, i amnonetheless confident that wewill find the way to continue thisimportant and precious part ofour mission. Please continue topray for the school, as it diligentlyseeks the best way to secure itsfuture.

and for serVe, my thanksgivingis offered wholeheartedly toChristine farah, who, some fiveyears ago, agreed to work toestablish a new way by whichpeople could volunteer with us innazareth.

now, we have a well-respectedservice which has provided abeautiful and deeply meaningfulexpression of our faith both in theplace of nazareth and by way ofits international scope and reach.it is with wonder that we haveseen the lord use serVe to quiteliterally change the lives of thosewho have participated.

for our small team based in theunited kingdom, i am grateful toeach of you, for your working withsuch passion and commitment tosupport all we are trying to do innazareth. it has been my joy tostand alongside you in all we haveachieved there.

for our Board members, past andpresent. i am grateful to themalso. for inviting me to participateon this journey which has soprofoundly impacted upon mepersonally, spiritually andprofessionally; and for continuingto give your time, prayer, expertise and concern tonazareth while expecting nothingin return.

and there is so much more to do!to extend and deepen our work inthe West Bank, to take on theprecious and powerful ministry ofthe nazareth Village. to walk withnew and significant partners, such as Cure international andthe Museum of the Bible inWashington...to continue to behis place, his work, in his hometown - the light on the hill...

so, to each of you, including you,our supporters, who have walkedtogether with us and with mealong this small part of thejourney in nazareth which hasalready spanned so manydecades and travelled so far, thank you. i will continue totreasure the place and people ofnazareth and will praycontinuously for the blessing, prospering and progress of allthat will be done in the future.

With every blessing to each ofyou;

Joseph Main, chief executive Officer of thenazareth trust

CHAIRMAN’SFOREWORDAN EVER-CHANGING NARRATIVE

One OF the veryhelPFUl realities OFthe bible is that it isnOt a static bOOk OFreliGiOUs teachinG bUtis instead eMbedded inthe narrative OFPeOPle On the MOve,Over tiMe and FrOMPlace tO Place -abrahaM, the childrenOF israel, JesUs hiMselFwhO had ‘nOwhere tOlay his head’, and PaUlwhO, in his MissiOnarytravels, encOUntereda GOd whO at tiMesblOcked his Path thensent hiM in new andUnexPected directiOns.

the history of the work innazareth is itself a story of God’sleading and directing differentpeople in varying circumstancesover a century and a half ofministry and service. this editionof the newsletter marks anothermilestone in that journey withnews of the departure of our Ceo,Joseph Main, who is moving on totake up a position with a Christiancharity in the uk after nearly eightyears of service in the nazarethtrust.

something of the legacy of theseyears of service is documentedelsewhere in the newsletter butfor my own part i would simplywish to record the gratitude of thetrust, and very particularly thosewhom it seeks to serve, for all thathas been offered as sacrificialservice and all that has beenachieved to the glory of God.

Please pray for Joseph and hisfamily as they engage newopportunities, experiences andchallenges. Pray also for thestability and continuity of all thework in nazareth during a periodof inevitable change and that thetrust may readily be led to identifythe person of God’s choosingwho will offer servant leadershipfor the next stage of our journey.

someone else on the move at thistime is our new spiritual Director, frank kantor, for whom this is aseason of relocation andreorientation, along with his wifeValerie, to the environment andculture of nazareth. this is a newappointment designed toconsolidate the Christian basisand aims that underpin all weseek to do within and through ourvarious endeavours. Pleaseuphold frank in your prayers thathe may readily establish himselfin life and ministry.

in the midst of these changesthere is also the constancy of theongoing work in nazareth, someof it captured in these pages, andthe ultimate constancy of the Godin whose hands all our life andwork securely rests.

and he’s doing both already, having started a worship groupthat, as well as attracting fellowChristians, is also popular with afew of the nursing students ofdifferent faiths.

samir said: “a few of the youngermembers of the group are fromdifferent religious backgrounds, but they find peace and serenityin worshipping and socialisingtogether.

“this brings me happiness that isbigger than i am, and a ‘stillness’that i cannot explain.

“My calling is to become amissionary nurse, not just anordinary nurse. i think this is how ican become a well-roundedhuman as well as a Christian.”

at first, samir thought Godwanted him to be of service bybecoming a monk.

so he travelled thousands ofmiles to italy to train at amonastery – only to find theanswer on the doorstep at hisfamily home in nazareth.

samir said: “it was always mydream to serve people and igained two valuable years’experience in italy when i waspreparing to become a monk. But i knew it wasn’t right.

“i decided it was my duty to carefor people and, becoming anurse, will allow me to serve moredirectly than if i was a monk -letting me fulfil both of mydreams.

“i believe it is God’s calling for meto become a nurse and servepeople in sickness and in health.”

samir took his inspiration tofollow an educational routeduring his time in italy, where hemet many people who had hadgreater access to education. hewas fascinated by their way ofthinking, their knowledge andanalytical skill.

having returned from italy with arefreshed outlook on life, samirapplied to, and was accepted by, anumber of nursing schools, butchose the nazareth school ofnursing, as he was interested inhis spiritual development too.

samir has also been impressedby the way staff at the school ofnursing care for and help theirstudents.

“Course co-ordinators gatherthose who may be under-achieving to help them overcomeissues they may be having, whilecourse directors discuss withstudents the best ways to studyand prepare for difficult examperiods.

“it is a great place to trainbecause of all the love andsupport you find there.”

samir is sure he’s made the rightdecision to train at the school ofnursing.

WE FOUND A CURE!

our Ceo Joseph Main wasintroduced to Dale by Dr scottharrison, founder of Cureinternational – and their meetingof minds led to the beginnings ofa wonderful friendship.

for a number of years the twoCeos had discussed how the twoorganisations could work moreclosely together. and last year, asour hospital began its mobilemedical clinic in the West Bankand we made plans to renovateits paediatric ward, the seeds ofan idea began to formulate.

after three intensive days ofstrategic planning, a firm planwas established - including amission statement and sharedvalues.

Working in partnership like thiswas new ground for us and forCure. together we wrote aMemorandum of understanding(Mou), with Dr suzy srouji, headof Paramedical services leadingfor the nazareth hospital. it wasformally signed on January 16.

So what does this mean?

for us it means we’ll have morescope to help children withorthopaedic surgical needs, whileour renovations will mean we canoffer more beds - whilecontinuing our life-long work ofoffering general paediatricservices.

the partnership will mainly focuson children from the West Bankbut has made a commitment thatno child, whatever theirbackground, religion or culturewill ever be refused help.

as two Christian Medicalorganisations, our shared faith isthe foundation of ourpartnership. it is our belief byworking together our ministry willbe strengthened.

We agree that healing changeseverything. it brings to an endphysical pain and can lead torestoration of dignity andinclusion. together we will carefor the spiritual health and notjust the physical health of thechildren we serve.

Cure has also committed to helpus identify potential donors andfunding agencies so we can meetour £2million appeal target.

it is still early days, and the formalpartnership agreement is still tobe defined.

Whatever happens next, it iscertain we have found a true, like-minded organisation in Cure andwe will keep you informed as thepartnership grows.

the plans for this year include thecontinuation of the daily visits inthe hospital, where the team, motivated by faith, demonstratethat God cares for all by their actsof kindness. this can be as simpleas making a cup of tea in thedialysis ward or sitting withpatients in the psychiatric ward.

We have hosted a visit from lindafugel and also celebratedinternational Women’s Day byway of a dedicated service in thechapel. During linda’s visit, sheled a study day on practical waysto minister within a multi-faithenvironment to support ourteam.

the team’s work extends beyondthe hospital and, this year, stacyand rose have begun to leadpraise and fellowship meetingsevery Wednesday evening inorder to provide pastoralguidance and support to femalestudents from the school ofnursing.

Our most recentmeeting included adevotional on theaccount of thewoman at the well,as told in John 4.the team has also startedplanning for the easter season, which includes the orthodoxcalendar. there’s a programmefor the whole of easter week, withplenty of activities for everyone toparticipate in.

“the Chaplaincy team has tenmembers from local churches, and are regularly joined by serVenazareth volunteers.

“team members get togetheronce a month, taking it in turn tohost the meeting at their homes,to provide encouragement and astrengthening of therelationships between our teammembers.

“it is wonderful to see everyoneworking together to achieve allthat we achieve in God’s name.

“on page 04, you will see thewonderful story of samir, astudent at our school of nursing, and how he has arranged prayerand praise meetings for his fellowstudents every tuesday morning,in addition to the Wednesdayevening meetings hosted by ourteam. samir has seen some ofhis friends from other faiths joinin the sessions as well as hisChristian friends.

Working at the heart of whereChristianity began couldn’t be amore exciting prospect for frank.

it is the type of work that is in hisblood – his father and hisgrandfather were missionaries.

originally from south africa, frank has also played a role inmission work, having helpeddevelop the ‘arise and Build’mission strategy for the Dioceseof natal, anglican Church ofsouthern africa.

he and his wife, Valerie, hadprayed for an opportunity toserve in the holy land and arehappy to uproot and move tonazareth from england, wherethey have lived for the past eightyears.

frank admits that they meet thechallenge with “equal measuresof excitement and trepidation”.

“there is excitement aboutworking with the executiveManagement team, trustees, staff and other stakeholders, toreview the rich spiritual legacyand heritage of the trust.

“Growing the Christian, values-ledculture within the organisation, inthe town where Jesus’ ownspiritual formation took place, isalso very exciting.

“the trepidation is about thechallenges of settling in thereligiously and culturally diversesetting of nazareth - within thepolitically charged context ofisrael and the wider Middle east.i can’t wait!”

frank hopes the move will helphim achieve greater wisdom andinsight into the life, teachings andtransforming power of Jesus.

“i hope to interpret this in waysthat will enable those associatedwith the trust to understand whatit means to be a healed and ahealing community, in nazarethand beyond,” he said.

she was looking for work neartheir home, which overlooksthe nazareth Village.

evon’s father suggested theypray together – and then told her:“then the first telephone call youreceive - that will be Jesus…”

his words proved to have aprophetic ring of truth, as that callcame from the nazareth Villageoffering evon a job as a weaver.

she spent her first three monthsat nazareth Village sewing thefirst century costumes, followingclose instructions from thearchaeological team to ensureauthenticity.

she helped to plant thepomegranate, cypress andalmond trees that we see at theVillage today. and, never afraid ofhard work, helped to dig thecistern and carried buckets ofsand for the floors and roofs ofthe houses.

she taught herself to weave onthe loom and spindle, followingthe ancient principles, becoming“hannah the Weaver” - 15 yearslater she remains a favouritecharacter for the thousands ofvisitors to the Village eachmonth.

as well as working at the Village, evon continued to care for herparents. her father died after along illness in 2004. shortlyafterwards her mother’s healthalso failed and she needed kidneydialysis three times a week at thenazareth hospital. evon lovinglycared for her mother until shedied last year.

this year, at the age of 66, evonwill semi-retire – reducing herworking week from six days tofour.

sharon swarr said: “We honourher for her service to the lord, her parents and to the Village.

“We pray she will be able to enjoyher senior years and the extratime she has with new hobbiesand friends. and, we thank Jesusfor sending her to us throughthat very first phone call!”

evon has always worked extremely hard

and the nazareth trust isdelighted to have been invited tohave a permanent display, including a full-scale replica of thenazareth Village, and a dedicateddisplay to demonstrate theimpact of the Bible today throughour work in the hospital, schoolof nursing and serVe nazareth.

the 430,000 sq ft, $250 millionmuseum project is being built inWashington DC close to theWhite house, and is due to openin 2017.

Words of wisdom and spirituality, timeless stories interwoven withparables and life-lessons fromthe Bible, are embedded in dailylife for millions of people –whether they are aware of it ornot.

one of the objectives of theMuseum is to show thesignificance of the Bible on allpeople, regardless of culture andbelief.

history tells us that science, thearts and humanities are allimpacted by Biblical principles.

the Museum will use its links withsuch organisations as the Vaticanlibrary and the Jerusalem Biblelands Museum to maintaindisplays that will includearchaeological and historictreasures, including the Dead seascrolls, ancient torah scrolls, early new testament texts, rarebiblical manuscripts and first-edition Bibles.

Cary summers, the Museum’sChief operating officer, said:“this is a Museum dedicated toone book, the Bible, which is themost widely sold, most debatedand most banned book in history.

“it’s the one that has attracted themost controversy of any book inhistory and it’s also the book thathas impacted the world morethan any single piece of literaturethat’s ever been written.”

When asked if the Museum's goalwas to bring people toChristianity, Cary explained: “Wehope that people would considerwhat the book has to say ... if it'scompelling, then that's a decisionthey can make on their own.”

Joseph Main, Chief executive ofthe nazareth trust, said: “We arehonoured to have been asked tobe a partner of the Museum ofthe Bible. this is an extraordinaryand world impactingdevelopment, which will changethe way we see the Bible, as wellas our understanding of itsimpact yesterday, today andtomorrow.

“as the work develops we’ll keepeveryone up-to-date with thisvery exciting development andask you to join us in prayer for thesuccess of the Museum and thatit would impact all who enter itsdoors”

Visitors to the Museum will beable to see three full floors ofexhibits, highlighting: theimpact of the Bible, thehistory of the Bible, and theBible's narrative. The fifthfloor of the Museum will havespace for travelling exhibitsand for other groups affiliatedwith the Museum.

We believe this invaluableexperience gives participants thechance to scale the heights, meetand overcome challenges, andgrow in knowledge, faith andunderstanding as they serve God.

they arrive in nazareth at a highpoint, in every sense, as we’rebased at the top of the steepnazarene hill. our participantsare filled with excitement andanticipation as they take in theirsurroundings.

“the hill is one of the highlightsfor everyone who visits”, saysChristine farah, of serVenazareth. it is also the perfectmetaphor for the serVeexperience.

Christine explained: “for all ofour serVers, their time here is ajourney, in many ways similar toone of our regular hikingexcursions, the arbel cliff, whichalso forms part of the Jesus trail.

“We begin our hike at the top ofthe mountain, where we stop totake in the scenery. We arealways compelled to stop tocapture the beauty of themoment.

“as our serVers go to work, engaging with the localcommunity and making newfriends, the trail can get tricky! aswith the descent of the arbel cliff, serVers recognise that thingsare done differently, responsesvary, and that culture shock canbe an obstacle for us to negotiateand appreciate.

“as we descend Mount arbel tocomplete our journey we findhandholds and footholds justwhere we need them - culturalinteractions need thosehandholds too.

“We find those in the support ofcommunity, fellowship, prayerand a desire to see the lord workin us. We may express ourselvesin different languages andgestures, but we worship thesame lord.

“for serVers, the end of thejourney is when it is time to returnhome. it may have beenchallenging, the culture shock anunexpected obstacle, butreaching the destination is alwaysa celebration!” said Christine.

We believe serVinG God innazareth is an adventure, whichwill strengthen you, not onlythrough the hills, stairs and cliffsyou’ll climb, but also through hiswork in you.

you will be physically andspiritually fitter, have anappreciation of other cultures, and be better equipped to serveothers.

you will also gain an insight intoyourself and your relationshipwith God and that’s somethingspecial that lasts a lifetime!

so that’s why the nazareth trusthas launched a £2m appeal toupgrade and extend the unit andits facilities in 2015.

the Paediatric Ward is open 24/7and already provides crucialservices to hundreds of children amonth.

But it is the only surgical andorthopaedic unit for youngstersin the whole of the surroundingarea of nazareth - and now it isgetting busier all the time aschildren referred by the WestBank Clinic arrive for surgery.

“Worryingly, we’re facing a criticalsituation where demand will soonoutstrip the supply of services weare able to offer.

“this appeal is vital as we neverwant to be in the position of beingunable to help a child who issuffering or whose life could beimproved”, said norman Bennett, trustee finance officer.

the children’s ward has 18 beds, providing care for children andyoung people, and the outpatientservice gives general andspecialised consultations as wellas emergency support and healtheducation.

Dr Bishara Bisharat, head ofhospital, said: “the wardprovides excellent care, but wewant to do more. the time hascome to see major changes in theward - it’s in the oldest part of thebuilding and its condition affectsthe young people who come fortreatment.

“We aim to make sure childrenare in hospital for as short a timeas possible, but we also want tomake that time as pleasant andpositive as we can by supportingtheir educational and familyneeds, alongside improving theirhealth.”

so the Paediatric appeal aims toraise £2 million, not only toextend and renovate the currentfacilities, but also to providespace for extra beds and buystate-of-the-art equipment.

the trust also wants to add a playroom, a study room, and a familywelfare area for family memberswho often stay with their sickchildren 24 hours a day.

hussam salman, Director ofCapital Development, said: “thenew facility is expected to open in2017 and we’re inviting everyoneto help us provide the highest-quality treatment for our youngpatients.

“so we are pleading for everyonewho can help to please put yourheart and soul into this newappeal.

“With the ever-generous help ofour supporters, we can make surechildren benefit from anenhanced ward, with the mostmodern equipment, and thewonderful care our skilled teamprovides.”

five thousand people with warrelated injuries and healthproblems entered the doors of alahli and you, as our supporters, helped to provide the essentialmedicines, equipment, food, andbedding needed for the doctorsand staff to continue in suchdifficult circumstances.

recently Dr Bishara Bisharat, head of hospital, visited the alahli hospital where he received avery warm welcome.

Dr Maher ayyad, the MedicalDirector at al ahli, said: “the staffwere overwhelmed by thekindness and generosity receivedand this is the beginning of awonderful friendship.”

in total, the al ahli needed toraise £312,000 and ourcontribution of £71,500 was asignificant amount towardsreaching that goal.

the hospital building itself wasextensively damaged andwhatever funds were received inthe latter months of 2014, arebeing put towards any necessarystructural repairs.

the al ahli has received muchsupport from other uk andinternational organisations butwhat has set us aside from allothers, is that we are the onlyhospital within israel to haveoffered a hand of friendship andto provide practical and not onlyfinancial support.

speaking to those who gave socaringly to our appeal, Dr Bisharasaid: “We simply cannot thankyou enough for your kindnessand generosity in helping anothermember of our family in its timeof need.”

“we loved you so much that wewere delighted to share with younot only the gospel of God butour lives as well, because youhave become so dear to us.”1 Thessalosnians 2:8
