Please know what an honor it is to serve as your District 3 President!
This district has been stable and growing through the past leadership of Debra Litton and the
future leadership of Adrienne Curry. Our meetings are lively, fun, and dedicated to our pro-
fession. Please come join us!
We have an ambitious calendar of events, designed to welcome and engage members across
many types of activities. On March 15th we held our first Celebration of Excellence recognizing
45 District 3 nurses for leadership, scholarship, service, teaching, collaboration, and exemplary
practice! What a high night hearing stories of valor, love, skill, and caring! Many thanks to
UAB CNO Terri Poe and UAB Highlands Hospital for generously providing the facility and
reception! Pictures and list of honorees inside!
Our membership is growing! We are at 722 members with 36 new members since January!!
Wow!! This is due in part to new strategy for getting information to nurses in our area. Our
Facebook site has added hundreds of new “fans” and reaches thousands with the new “boosts”
that we can send to targeted users, notably nurses in our 13 county area. We held a career fair
for nursing students in February with 5 schools represented! (Pictures inside!)
In May we have Nurses Night Out on May 10th at Railroad Park. In June we will also have a
Backpack stuffing at our meeting and vote on Delegates for convention. Thank you all for the
work you do for our patients, families, communities, and each other!! We are the voice of nurs-
ing in Alabama! Thank you for being part of ASNA!

Advocacy OPINION: Medicaid Expansion
Stand Up & Speak Out!
On March 6th I had the opportunity to visit on “The Hill” in Washington, DC as a private citizen
advocating for nursing, healthcare, and education including meeting with Alabama congres-
sional/senate staff. I thanked all stating we supported their work as our elected representa-
tives. I also met our U.S. Senator Doug Jones. As the topic turned to Medicaid Expansion in Ala-
bama, a “hot topic” and one which has been rekindled this year, I asked Senator Jones, “What
can nurses do?” He said clearly and with conviction, “Stand up and speak out!”
Numerous Alabama healthcare partners support Medicaid expansion. The Alabama Hospital
Association (alaha.org) estimates that the additional funds would bring in more than $11
billion over four years. In addition there would be another $316 billion in savings to state-paid
services. The Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics in their legislative advo-
cacy 2019 agenda supports the expansion of Medicaid and funding of Medicaid and CHIP. They
cite studies done by Alabama universities on the impact as providing healthcare access to
300,000 Alabamians and creating 30,000 jobs. Most importantly, they state, the children would
have better outcomes. Protection of funding for Medicaid and CHIP coverage is a permanent
priority of the Alabama Chapter-AAP (alaap.org). The Medical Association of State of Alabama
(alabamamedicine.org) lists Medicaid Expansion on its 2019 State Legislative Agenda.
New legislation proposed by Senator Jones would support allowing states to start Medicaid
expansion at 100% funding. How do we act? Contact your U.S Congressman and U.S. Senator
Shelby and ask them to support States Achieve Medicaid Expansion (SAME) Act of 2019. The
SAME Act gives states that choose to expand Medicaid now a second chance to receive the
initial 100% federal funding and then be tapered over six years to 90%.
Write a letter to Governor Ivey and tell her your stories of Alabamians who would have bene-
fitted from Medicaid expansion. Tell her about the rural hospitals across our state and the
good work they do! Contact your Alabama Legislator and Senator and ask them to support
Medicaid expansion in Alabama. Be informed, exercise your civic responsibility, and speak from
your heart in your unique role as an Alabama Nurse! Stand Up and Speak Out!
