Issue 478 Spring Term

Friday 17th March, 2017

From the Headmaster

Following the delights of last Friday’s celebrations, it has been a welcome relief to have a slightly calmer week with the children settling back into their usual routines of Fairfield life on Monday. Having said this, our sports teams and Year 2 musicians have risen yet again to the challenge to give of their best. All of the children can be rightly proud of their achievements as this week’s edition of @Fairfield is testament to.

A special mention must go, of course, to our U11 girls Hockey team who have been crowned as Regional County Champions. Well done everybody!

On Wednesday 15th March, all of Year 2 went to Leicester Cathedral. We split into groups and took part in four different activities which taught us about the Cathedral and the Christian religion. We also got to see the tomb of King Richard III which was amazing.

Last week, Year 2 went back in time to learn all about the 1950’s. Amongst many other really interesting facts, we discovered that sweet rationing ended in 1953. So to celebrate this event, we had great fun decorating cakes with LOTS of sweets (thank you parents for providing them!) and sold them to the school at break time. We raised an amazing £203.00 for Save the Bees.

The winners of our Fairfield Challenge competitions were announced in assembly this week. The standard of the entries in both categories was extremely high and we definitely have some budding designers and engineers in school. Congratulations to all of the winners who will go on to take part in the 3M Young Innovators Challenge later in the year.

The winners of the Canyon Challenge were: 1st place - Layan Jethwa, Niklas Saukko-Paavola, James Wright 2nd place - Yagna Pabari, Alisha-Fay Sellar 3rd place - Jemima Wardle These bridges were the lightest, whilst still being able to carry 12Kg in weight. Congratulations to all of the other children who entered this part of the competition.

The winners of the Eco Musical Instrument Challenge were: 1st place— The Scrapyard Symphony Girls: Alani Clarson, Molly Gardiner, Violet O’Neill, Grace Doolan and Rebecca Doolan. 2nd place— Piano by Alyssia Gill 3rd place—Drum Kit by Mason Platts Again, many congratulations to all our pupils who entered with some super designs for their instruments, ranging from maracas to guitars.

Amendment: In last week’s edition of @Fairfield, the Cross Country report for Tuesday 7th March should have said Asha finished in 9th place in the Year 5 Girls race and not Anya. Apologies. Mrs Collington.

I would like to remind parents that pupils wishing to take a LAMDA examination in the Summer term need to be able to memorise the words to both their examination pieces by the last week of this term. Full details regarding the examination will be sent via email to all pupils who are on target for their exam.

I have suggested to pupils still struggling to learn the words to practise daily, just as they would for a music examination.

I am required to send the exam entries into LAMDA on the second day of the of next term and therefore will be drawing up the examination timetable during the Easter break.

Thank you for supporting your child with their LAMDA examination preparation.

We have several items of lost property. If you recognise any of these items please see Mr Wilson in the PE Department.

Thirty one of our Year 2 children had a wonderful time at Fairfield’s first U7 Tag Rugby Festival on Saturday. Our seven teams were joined by teams from Loughborough RFC, Keyworth RFC and Shepshed RFC in a festival of rugby that was played in a friendly and cheerful spirit.

Since January, our children have been learning how to play in Mr Wilbraham’s Tag Rugby Club. It was great to see how far they have progressed in just 6 sessions. It has also been wonderful to hear how the children have been so enthused by the sport, that many have gone along to their local Rugby Clubs to join in there too!

Mr Wilbraham would like to thank all of the children for playing so well and with such big smiles on their faces; the Year 2 parents who were so very supportive and, of course, the amazing Fairfield staff who did such a good job of running the Festival.

Netball v Foremarke Hall Tournament

SPORTS REPORTS

On Saturday 11th March, a squad of ten Year 6 girls represented the school in the annual Foremarke Hall Netball Tournament. After a thorough warm up the girls were ready to play their first match against King Henry, a school we have enjoyed many close matches with over the years and we knew would be tough opposition to face in our first game. The girls played really well and produced one of the best first halves of netball they have played. Leading 7-3 at half time. we knew that King Henry would come back strongly in the second half and they certainly did but the girls held their nerve and made their centre passes count winning the game 12-10.

The second game was against Penine Way, a school we knew little about. After the high of winning the first match the girls took a while to settle but still managed to make the most of the possession they had and won the game 8-0. On to the next game, Ratcliffe College, who we had played on Wednesday at another tournament. They were keen to reverse the result and gain a victory over us. They had made several tactical changes but the girls dealt with them magnificently and played some calm and assured netball, although those of us on the side lines didn’t always feel as calm! Ratcliffe never gave up and continued to press our attackers. However, they could not get the ball into the shooting circle and there were many shouts of ‘great interception’ and ‘great tip’ from both the supporters and players on court. We won the game 9-4. A great effort!

With little time between the games it was important to rotate the players and use all of the strengths within the squad. In our next two games we were due to face Foremarke ‘A’ and ‘B’ with the support of the home crowd. In both games we started nervously, we knew that if we won both of them we would win the tournament. But again the defence all the way down the court held strong, with our shooters winning back possession from backlines and our centre court turning the ball over at centre passes. We won both games, 5-1 against the ‘A’ team and 9-0 against the ‘B’ team.

Another set of fantastic results and a great performance from the squad. Thank you to Emma for her support and the parents for transporting and encouraging our team! Mrs Webster.

On Thursday, the whole of Year 4 travelled to Great Glen to face Leicester Grammar Junior School in a Netball match. The girls have been working towards this for the last few weeks; focussing on positions and their roles. The girls were very excited on the journey and couldn't wait to start their matches. All 3 teams should be proud of their performances. Each of them improving every quarter. The games were end to end and extremely entertaining. A huge thank you goes to the many parents and grandparents who came to support and cheer the girls on and Mrs Sutcliffe and Miss Nicol for their umpiring and invaluable coaching. Well done girls lots to look forward to in Year 5! Mrs Webster.

SPORTS REPORTS

A fantastic afternoon of netball was had on Wednesday 15th March, as the whole of Year 6 played in their final year group Netball fixture against Leicester Grammar Junior School. All of the girls were excited to play and produced some fabulous performances. On all of the courts there were some lovely passages of flowing attacking netball. All of our teams should be extremely proud of their progress throughout the term and can look forward to an exciting House Competition over the next few weeks! Thank you to Miss Nicol, Mrs Sutcliffe and Mr Wilson for their support and umpiring. Mrs Webster.

SPORTS REPORTS

Football v U10 LGJS

On Wednesday 15th March, the U10 Football team played in a tournament at Leicester Grammar Junior School with five other local independent schools. It was a round-robin event and we chose to use a 3-2-1 formation, using wing-backs to create overwhelming numbers when attacking. We started extremely well by beating the hosts but then came against a very tough team from The Elms. It was a close game which ended fairly in a 2-2 draw. Our third game was against Grace Dieu; we took an early lead and never looked back, knowing that we needed a good goal difference if we were to have a chance of winning the competition. Our fourth game was against Witham Hall; we started extremely strongly and had multiple shots on targets but were continually denied by some brilliant goal-keeping. Against the run of play, Witham counter-attacked and scored a goal meaning that we went into half-time in a losing position. We were determined to make amends in the second half but despite numerous chances, we just couldn’t force the ball into the net and lost the game 1-0. Our last game was against Stoneygate; we discovered our previous form and were able to win convincingly.

Overall a successful and enjoyable afternoon. We came second in the competition; a fair result. Although we drew against the eventual winners, they were able to win all their other games with a very strong goal difference.

We need to work on developing more clinical finishing in front of goal.

Mr Smail.

On Thursday 16th March, Year 4 ‘A’ team played LGJS away. On a field much smaller than we are used to, the boys were a bit unsure of how to manage the conditions at first but soon worked out how to play some good passing football. Unfortunately, we were unable to take our chances and LGJS managed to score 3 goals past us. The boys played well and were gracious in defeat and as ever, were a credit to themselves and the school. Mr Young.

SPORTS REPORTS

Football v Year 4 LGJS

Fairfield U9 ‘B’ travelled to LGJS for what proved to be an excellent performance from our boys. It was decided that our boys would play a 2-3-1 formation. The goals were incredibly small so I gave the boys the challenge of taking a shot on goal every minute. From the start, Fairfield dominated. The boys were 2-0 up at half time. The boys continued this tempo in the second half and scored another 2. LGJS did manage to pull 1 back. The final score was Fairfield 4 LGJS 1. A fantastic result from the boys. I was incredibly impressed by the way the boys listened. Each player made sure they did their job and kept to their position. Well done! Mr Arnold.

The Year 4 ‘C’ team played against LGJS on Thursday afternoon. It was a close battle with Fairfield producing some good defensive work in the first half. Unfortunately, the dead-lock was broken by Leicester just before half-time with a very powerful strike beating our keeper. In the second half, we pushed forward much more and had numerous chances on goal that went wide of the small goals. Leicester Grammar counter-attacked again and found the net. The final score was 2-0 to Leicester Grammar. I was proud of the way the Fairfield team pulled together and gave their very best on the pitch. Well done boys! Mr Smail.

The Fairfield U9 ‘D’ team travelled to LGJS for their Year Group Football fixture on Thursday 16th March. It was a damp day and slightly soft underfoot, so we made sure that every pass had plenty of weight behind it to ensure it got to the desired player during the match. The boys’ showed great spirit throughout the first half, and had some wonderful opportunities to shoot at goal, coupled with some great team work. Fairfield came away at half time with a 1-0 lead.

After a quick half time turn around, Leicester Grammar pushed hard and had some strong chances which were all denied by some fantastic saves, great defensive work, and clever marking. With only a few minutes to go, the boys’ used fantastic footwork and a sequence of passes to help them secure a second goal taking their lead to 2-0, which was soon followed by the final whistle.

The boys must now work on pressuring the ball when they do not have possession to give the opposition less time on the ball and supportive work when breaking away. Overall a superb game which was enjoyed by all. Well done boys! Mr Wilson.

Children are being encouraged to join in with this exciting project by collecting interesting and colourful plastic and adding it to the tubes. These are in the corridor between the Jefferies building and the new building. When the tubes are full we will be creating some large pieces of art for the school with the plastic. There will be more information about this project on Firefly under ‘Life@Fairfield’ including what sort of items can be collected and some examples of the sort of art we will be able to make.

On Tuesday 14th March, the U11 Girls' Hockey ‘A’ Squad journeyed south to LGJS to compete in the Leicestershire In2Hockey County Finals. Following on from what has been an outstanding season so far, the girls went into the first match against Ratcliffe with confidence and determination to secure a positive result. Excellent ball transfer and solid defensive play gave the girls a resounding 7-0 win and boosted confidence for their next game against Leicester Grammar. Again the girls went out to take the game to the opposition and creating numerous goal scoring opportunities whilst barely being challenged in defence. Continued pressure at the opposite end soon paid dividends, culminating in another super 6-0 victory. Their final match was against Dixie, a team, which to date, we hadn't played. The girls, as ever, rose to the challenge and put in another fantastic team performance to achieve a resounding 6-0 win. The entire squad all put in a great shift both on the Astro turf and on the side line and I am delighted that they will progress to the Regional Finals in April, where I am confident they will put on another fine display of hockey. Thank you to all the fabulous support the girls received and to Ms Nicol for umpiring all the matches, it was greatly appreciated. Mrs Sutcliffe.

SPORTS REPORTS

On Tuesday 14th March, the Year 6 boys played in the In2Hockey County Finals at LGJS. The boys got off to a slow start losing their opening game 1-0 but, to their credit, they picked themselves up and came back strongly in their second game and came out deserved winners. This meant we qualified for the play-offs and came up against a strong Ratcliffe side who managed to beat us. Well played boys! Mr Young.

The PTA will be holding a Coffee Morning on Friday 24th March, in the Dining Hall from 8.45am - 10.15am. Hot and cold drinks and pastries will be, as always, complimentary. This is our way of thanking Fairfield families for supporting our other events throughout the year. As it coincides with Red Nose Day, there will be a voluntary collection for this worthy cause, which the school is supporting throughout the day.

This year to help support Comic Relief, we would like the children to wear their normal school uniform but add a ‘red twist’. This could be a red nose, red deely boppers, red cap, crazy hair band etc. We ask that if your child takes part in this, they bring a contribution for this cause. Thank you. Charity Committee.
