I know geetha and herfamily for more than four years. An excellent family, very sincere, god-fearing and honest. Geetha though young for her age, has got

wide knowledge about our vaishnava like Padukasaharam, lakshmi sahasram , sudharshana sathagam and for other slokas in a very interesting manner which has enriched us very much. Geetha has taken efforts for compiling Swami Desikars slogam - Yadhavaapyudham with pictures and meanings. Her bakthi towards Guru Ramanujar and Guru Mami is beyond measurable will not make a person to write false incidents in Nadi Nadi Naam kandukondom Smt. Sudha Kumar, Adyar.

    SRIVAISHNAVISM

    From the Desk of Dr.Sadagopan.

    || ThiruppANAzhwAr 's anubhavam of Sri RanganAthan: amalanAdhipirAn ||

Earlier in the day , we were reminded by Sri MadhavakkaNNan's summary of Srimadh Azhgiya Singar's incomparable postings in Nrusimha priyA magazine on the "Sukavi Sookthi" of ThiruppANar.

Swami Sri Desikan described the AzhwAr's prabhandham as " Sukavi Sookti" and was so moved by it that he wrote a 60 plus palm leaves long commentary on the these uniquely beautiful 10 paasurams that celebrate the Sarvanga Soundharyam and the anantha kalyANa guNams of NamperumAL .

Sri Sampath Rengarajan gave a beautiful presentation on the subject at Buffalo New York two years ago . That pravachanam is still ringing in my ears. He covered the first the three words of the first Paasuram and it took him an hour to do full justice to cover those three words (Amalan, Aadhi and PirAn). Since then , He has done a lot of research on the rest of the words of the first paasuram and the words of the remaining nine paasurams . I request him to share his rich and personal anubhavam with us in the near future .

Meanwhile , I will focus on Swami Sri Desikan's summary of the extraordinary meanings embedded in this most magnificient first paasuram . Swami Sri Desikan in his rahasya grantham , Muni Vaahana BhOgam , picks out 15 of the limitless auspicious attributes of Sri RangaanthA and instructs us on the high point of each of these 15 kalyANa guNAs . I will focus on this area of the anubhavam of Swami Sri Desikan on this glorious day .

The FIFTEEN GUNAAS for Sri Ranganaathan picked out by ThiruppANar according to Swami Desikan are:

  • 9

    1. Moksha Pradhathvam/samsAra VinAsanam ( Conferral of Moksham and there by freeing us from the recurring cycles of births and deaths.Conferral of the boon of Nithya Kaimkaryam to Him and His consort in paramapadham .

    2. Jagath Kaaranathvam: Being fundametally responsible for the creation, protection and the dissolution of the Universe . Being the sole cause of all chEthanams and AchEthanams and not being supported by any other entity or principle regarding His Jn~Anam and sakthi .

    3. SaraNyathvam: Being the SaraNyan (refuge) for those, who surrender to Him through the AchArya Mukha Prapatthi or the other three types of prapatthi .Assuring everyone that seek Him that there is no need to look for others to protect them .

    4. UpakArathva Kaashtai: Helping His BhakthAs and coming to their rescue without hesitation on Kshudra VyAjam ( very little effort) and making Himself the object of our enjoyment inspite of His unimaginably lofty status as Ubhaya VibhUthi nAthan ( Lord of Nithya and LeelA vibhUthi).Even after this extraordinary help , our Lord feels that He is indebted forever to His bhakthAs because of His inability to give even more than what He has blessed us with (viz)., Moksham .

5.KrupA Kaashtai : Unique and incomparable Mercy (KaruNai) for even those , who commit unspeakable offenses and yet saving them .This arises from His saraNAgatha Rakhaka Vratham that led Him to say that he will offer protection to even RaavaNA , if he sought His refuge and gave up his ill deeds . Through the small act (kashaNa Karthavyam )of Prapatthi , He is able to give the huge boon of residence in Sri Vaikuntam . After that granting of the boon , the Lord feels uncomfortable still over the thought that He has nothing more to give .

6.SvAthanthrya Kaashtai : Ability to elvate those , whom He wants to bless and protecting them in that status against anybody's efforts to counter what He established through His samkalpam .

    7. NirdhOshathva Kaashtai: Being forever blemishless (amalathvam). Even if He has affiliation to the blemish-containing entities that causes every one Aj~Nam and Dukkham , He does not incur any Aj~nam or Dukkham. The classic Upanishadic passage of the two birds sitting on the branch of the same tree with one experiencing false Knowledge and sorrows and the other not subject to these experiences.

8.Swaamithva Kaashtai or Being the supreme Lord of Every one including Brahman , Indran and all the others .

9.Soulabhya Kaashtai : ease of access , Bhaktha Sulabhan . He permits even those , who want to go away because of the fear of His grandeur to approach Him comfortably .

    10. Sousselya Kaashtai : Lowering Himself to the level ofeven those , who doubt His Lordship (Isavarathvam ) and taking the trouble to answering them and keeping them in His fold .

    11. Vaathsalya Kaashtai: Out of His limitless affection for His dearest BhakthAs , he ignores their occasional trespasses and continues to look after their yoga KshEmam .

    12. Parama PrApyathva Kaashtai: Being the sole object of attainment as parama PurushArtham .

    13. Aasritha PakshapAtha Kaashtai: Being Sarva VarNa samanan ( equal of approach to all four VarNams ), He blesses those , who seek refuge in Him by cancelling anything countering His sankalpam to protect His BhakthAs ). This arises from His predisposition (pakshapAtham ) to those, who sought His protection (aasrithAL) .

14.BhOgyathva Kaashtai: Conferring the sweetness of the enjoyment of His soundharyam .

15.ayathna BhOgyathva Kaashtai : Blessing capacity to let one enjoy Him without the intercession of the Indriyams . His svAbhavika anubhAvyathvam is referred to here . Just as the breeze carries the fragrance of the flowers , He comes in an unbanishable way and lets our eyes enjoy His holy feet without satiety .

All these 15 kalyANa guNams are celebrated in the very first verse of AmalanAdhipirAn Sri Sookthi according to Swami Sri Desikan .

  • 10

At the very beginning , Swami Desikan states that he wishes to comment on the Sri Sookthi of ThiruppANar , the poet with auspicious attributes. He decribes the AzhwAr , who rode on the back of Loka Saaranga Muni (Muni Vaahana BhOgar ) as " Mudhitha Mukunda VilOkanar " or the One , who was intent on having the Sevai of the Lord of Srirangam , who in turn is elated to see His BhakthAs . Swami says that he is commenting on this extraordinary Sri Sookthi brimming with Bhaavam and Bhakthi for the enjoyment of the BhagavathOtthamAs , who have controlled their senses (Indriyams) to have the Bhagyam of the sEvai of Lord RanganathA . The slokam is as follows :

vyachikyAsathi BhakthyA viraktha-thOshayA VenaktEsa Kavi : Mudhitha Mukundha vilOkana MunivAhana Sukavi Sookthim imAm

Swami points out the uniqueness of this prabhandham of ThiruppANar among all the other divya Prabhandhams . He says that The AmalanaadhipirAn Sri Sookthi is not too long ( athi vistharam ) , not too short (athi sankOcham ) , not generating any doubts ( SamsayAthi Janakathvam ) , Sorrow due to separation from the Lord as Naayikai (Viraha KlEsam), Sending of messengers to plead the case to unite the Jeevan with the Lord (DhUtha prEkshaNam ) , instructions to others (parOpadEsam ) and crticism of the other mathams (Para-Matha nirasanam). IT IS JUST FULL OF BHAGAVADH ANUBHAVA GHANA RASAM ( the rich delight arising from the total enjoyment of the Lord's soundharyam and kalyAna guNAs ). All the tenpaasurams of this AdhyAthma Prabhandham thus differ from the aruLic cheyalkaL of other AzhwArs according to Swami Sri Desikan .

At the end of his commetary on this rahasya grantham , Swami Desikan describes the nature of the Azhwaar and the object of his love , Sri Ranganathan this way :

AzhwAr : aadhi marai yena Ongum arangathuLLE aruL aarum kadalaik kaNdavan yenn PaaNan

Swami salutes with affection the Sukavi as " Yenn PaaNan " (My ThiruppANAzhwAr ). He describes further about the object of PaaNan's reverential salutation as the Lord of Srirangam resting under the PraNavAkAra VimAnam , the ocean of mercy , Sri RanganAthan .

About the quintessence of the Prabhandham , Swami Desikan states :

vEdiyar taam viritthuraikkum viLaivukellAm vidhai aahum ithu yenru viLampinOmE

This prabhandham is the seed for all what VedanthIs elaborate as the fruits of BrahmOpAsanam .

Swami goes onto say that the ten paasurams of ThiruppANar as "pazha maRayin poruL " ( the meaning of ancient VedAs ).

Swami Desikan concludes his commentary with a beautiful palasruthi slOkam :

MunivAhana bhOgOyam mukthaisvarya rasOpama: krupayA RanganAthasya kruthArthAyathu na: sadhA

(Meaning): This rahasya grantham ( MunivAhana BhOgam ) is equal in anubhavam to the BrahmAnandha Rasam enjoyed by the Muktha Jeevans in parama Padham . May this make all of the readers krutha Kruthya: (the ones , who realized the object of their desires) through the mercy of Lord RanganAthA .

    DHARMA STHOTHRAM

    Part 213.

Vaayuh,Adhokshajah Sriman Narayana is worshipped in various forms of Sahasra nama, and Ashtothram and we perform Archanas at our convenience in the temples. But devotees mostly pronounce some of these namas in brief with some understanding of such namas. The namas in general have the power to shower His grace. When one touches electric current without knowing its reaction, electrocution is sure to cause . Similar to that divine namas without knowing its meanings even are sure to get benefits. Though not necessary to understand them fully to get its benefits,it is better to know few of them.. For this a brief description is given on the meanings of namas of Sriman Narayana. 1. Kesava has four meanings. it is meant as Killer of Kesi,a demon, ,Kesavahkleshanasanah ,one who gets rid of all our agonies, Ka and esa as Brahma and Shiva being controlled . Kesa pasaha one with wonderful hair.2.Madhava it is meant as Consort or Husband of Sri MahaLakshmi , mind being controlled by our sense organs in order to be free from getting scattered .3.Narayana ,nara means athman ,soul Ayana means both upaya and upeya(the means and the goal). 4.Govindah , Go meaning as cow, and He is Cows protector ,.Go indicating vedas and He is one who confers knowledge of vedas on us. Go indicating earth ,He is one who protected mother earth from Hiranyaksha in varraha avatharam.5. Vishnu as protecting

  • 35

Supreme Sri Maha Vishnu .6. Madhu sudhana ,informing bringing back the vedas by killing Madhu and Kaitabha demons as they stole them.7. Trivikrama the glories of incarnation in dwarf form and extending further to measure three worlds as Thiruvikraman.7Sridhara ,on the glory of holding Sri maha Lakshmi in chest , so that easy to get the grace of Him with Her recommendations. 8.Hrishikesa ,again on controller of senses,9. Padmanabha on the naval on lotus flower and Brahma originating from the lotus .10. Damodara on the rope in the waist by His mother Yasoda in Sri Krishna Avatharam.Sriman Narayana is the abode of the entire universe. His compassion towards all is unique.Hence uttering these namas for ever is most comfortable to all souls. Now on Dharma Sthothram .

nama vaayuh is meant as Sriman Narayana is one who is in the form of atmospheric air. He sustains all life everywhere. He is not the air but He is the life giving power in the air. He is also said to be the cause of smell from the air. In Gita 7.9 punyo gantha prithivyam Sri Krishna declares that He is the original fragrance of the earth. He is heat in the fire. He is the penance of all ascetics. Hence, we find a child whether knows about the heat in fire or not, able to realize the heat when it touches the fire. Sriman Narayana is said to be freely moves with all devotees like a wind passing through all places. He Himself goes to devotees wherever they are.. In Daya Sathakam 65 th pasuramSwamy Desikan says as Nishathanam netha kapikulapathi kaapi sabari Though the punishments for erring persons were informed earlier, Sriman Narayanas Ramavatharam and Krishnavatharam leelas as Srinivasas Daya, kaarunya character is well described in this sloka. Rama regards Guha the tribal chieftain of sringiperapura as a friend and appreciate his services. He deems sabari the humble woman in matanga ashram, as a solicitous mother desired to feed him with delicious fruits, .He esteems Jatayu the eagle king who risks his life in an ttempt to resucesita from Ravanas clutches and honoured as father and conducted funeral rites. In Ramayanam Rama says as Mithrabhavena ,one who moves as a friend of Him even in opposition side, , He is sure to protect him. In Gita also He is ready to protect all those who surrender before Him sacrificing the benefits of Dharma need not woory at all as maa sucha , as He is sure to protect them. Thus we observe He sustains everywhere and anywhere and save all of us and so called as Vaayu before

In 415 th nama Adhokshajah ,it is meant as one who never diminished in greatness or grandeur ,like the glory of the seas .Sriman Narayana is said to be in the form of virat cosmic purusha in between the sky and the earth. In Maha Bharatham it is said as He is Adokshaja, because of His vitality never flows down and not undergoing any degeneration from His original nature. He is one who is not available to the powers of the sense organs to perceive. He ever remains under both the atmosphere and the earth and supporting the entire universe. In spite of all enjoyments by all, his nature remains unaffected and strength unaffected or diminished. In Thiruvaimozhi 3.10.1 Nammazhwar says Nanmai udaiyavan seer paravap petra naan oor kuraivilen . Azhwar says sriman Narayana in various incarnations , exhibited His presence, excellence and supreme quality. With chankam, chakram, bows ,and other instruments in hands He climbed up on Garuda and killed all demons and wicked persons . All blessings and best wishes. attained from Him made us one without any errors. But Andal in Thiruppavai tells as Kurai Ondrum Illa Govinda only because of this nature. Thus though he takes so much care on us He has not diminished in anything. Only Jeevathmas not knowing this Saranagathi principle are losing everything. Thus He is calld as Adhokshajah .

In this pasuram Nachiar sang mangalasasanam to Perumals thiruvadi. As soon as Perumal walked towards the gopi

girls, Nachiar asked Perumal to stand still while she along with her friends (Bagawathas) did mangalasasanam to

Perumals thiruvadi. As Nachiar is the daughter of Periazhwar, she followed his procedures and sang thirupallandu

for Perumals thiruvadi. Periazhwar sang mangalasasanam to Lord Lakshmi Narasimhan to protect Him from

diseases which affect infants even though Lord Narasimha existed in this world for only one muhurtham. Azhwar said

that as no one did mangalasasanam to Lord Lakshmi Narasimhan at the time of incarnation, Azhwar wished to

perform mangalasasanam as it is better to be late than never. Similarly Nachiar sang mangalasasanam for Perumals

thiruvadi as Perumal measured this world with His feet. Nachiar sang the glory of Perumal as out of His compassion

for us He placed His feet over this world even though it is full of sinners, thorns and stones. Devendran did not think

about singing mangalasasanam for Perumals thiruvadi since he was waiting for Perumal to complete measuring the

worlds so that he can get back his property. Bali Chakravarthi did not sing mangalasasanam either since he was

worried that he was losing his property. None of the residents did mangalasasanam either as they did not realize how

lucky they were that Perumal placed His feet on everyones head!

Nachiar then praised the Lord for walking over to the land of Lanka as Lord Rama even though it was the residence

of the biggest sinner called Ravana. The Lord placed His divine feet over the land of the sinner and won Ravana in

    the battle.

Nachiar then sang the praise of Perumals thiruvadi for killing Chakatasuran.

It was customary to place the baby under the shade of an old cart during the day of the babys bathing ceremony.

The people of Gokulam believed that, the old carts warded off evil spirits. Nanda Gopan went shopping for an old cart

as all the carts he had were almost brand new.

He reached a used cart shop and found a beautiful cart. The cart wheel as well as the harness had been hand

carved. Chakatasuran was a friend of Kamsa. He was the son of Asura Dhanu. He had offered to transform himself

into a cart wheel. His plan was to fall on top of Krishna and crush him. Nanda Gopan felt attracted to the cart. He felt

as if the cart was speaking with him. This was true because Chakatasuran was trying hard to influence Nanda

    Gopans decision.

What was this cart used for before it was sold to you? enquired Nanda Gopan. He wanted to make sure that the cart

had been used for auspicious purposes only.

  • 43

Weddings sir, answered the shop keeper. Many a times was this cart used to transport the bride and groom to their

new home. Each and every one of the couple who travelled to their home for the first time as a couple in this cart

have been blessed with a long and happy life!

Nanda Gopan paid for the cart and asked the shop keeper to deliver the cart to his home.

Soon they organized a bathing ceremony for Krishna on the day the moon was in the constellation of Rohini. Nanda

Gopan invited the Brahmins to perform the Vedic ritual for the child. Everyone gathered around to see Yashoda

perform the bathing ceremony. She had purified the water with leaves of the gooseberry tree. She had added a pinch

of turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom and other fragrant medicinal herbs to the bath water. She checked the water

temperature with her elbow before bathing Krishna.

Later the citizens gathered in the large exhibition ground. The ground was decorated with banners and flags. People

danced and sang in joy. They ran about spraying coloured water on everyone. The vendors had set up their carts and

were selling flowers, jewellery, fruit, sweets and other snacks. Yashoda and Nanda Gopan had arranged to serve

lunch. They donated food, garments, garlands and cows to the Brahmins and the needy.

After the ceremony, Krishna who knew about the presence of Chakatasuran pretended to be tired. Yashoda gently

rocked Him in her arms till He pretended to be asleep. She then made a make shift swing with her saree and tied it to

the yoke of a cart. Little did she know that Chakatasuran was present as one of the wheels; she placed the baby in

the swing. She asked a few children who were playing nearby to keep an eye on Krishna. As soon as she went away,

Krishna woke up and started to cry. He kicked with His legs and one of His feet gently touched Chakatasuran. There

was a loud crash as the axle broke and the wheel dislocated from the cart breaking into bits and pieces!

Krishna ! yelled Yashoda as she rushed towards the broken cart. Her heart beating fast she rushed towards her

baby while praying for his safety.

Nanda Gopan and the others came running towards the cart as well.

What happened here? asked Nanda Gopan to the children.

He started to cry, said the children in a chorus, maybe He was hungry. When He didnt see His mother He kicked at

the wheel with His tiny tender feet and the wheel broke into pieces!

Impossible! cried Nanda Gopan. I am sure the wheel wasnt fixed properly.

  • 44

No, it must be the influence of a malevolent planet! said Yashoda. Look how soft Krishnas feet are! His feet are

softer than a lotus bloom! How could such soft feet have the capacity to break a strong cart wheel?

Yashoda rocked her son in her arms. All her friends and relatives gathered around to make sure that their darling was

not hurt. Yashoda asked the Brahmins to perform a Vedic ritual to nullify the bad effects of the planets. The people of

Gokulam praised Lord Narayana for protecting Krishna! Even though they praised the Lord they did not perform

mangalasasanam for Krishnas feet as they did not realize that He had killed Chakatasuran with His feet. Therefore

Nachiar performed mangalasasanam in this pasuram for the divine feet of baby Krishna.

After a few years Lord Krishna grazed cattle in the forests of Vrindavan. One day Vatsasura disguised himself as a

calf to kill Krishna. The demon had assumed the form of a white calf; he foolishly thought that Perumal would be

unable to recognize him among the other calves. Krishna noticed Vatsasura immediately. Meanwhile another Asura

came in the guise of a huge vilambazham (wood apple) tree.

Krishna look at this new giant tree which wasnt there yesterday! exclaimed the other children. Please help us to get

    the tasty fruits!

Krishna caught hold of Vatsasuras hind legs. Raising the calf above His head He threw the calf over the green

canopy. The demon fell on top of the phony tree and fell to the ground taking his original form. Thus Krishna rid

Vatsasura from this Earth. Even though Perumal hurled the asura Vatsasura at the second asura in the form of a

tree, due to His grace the fruits were not squished and the boys feasted on the fruits happily. The children did not

singe the praise of Krishna as they were content with eating the fruit. Nachiar therefore sang mangalasasanam for

Perumals feet, Even though Perumal threw the asura with His arms, Nachiar sang the praise of Perumals thiruvadi

as proper foot work is required in order to hurl objects with great force.

Later the Lord noticed the gopas getting ready to give offerings to Devendra.

Why are you making all these preparations? asked Lord Krishna innocently.

We have to offer all these food to Devendra to please him so that he will shower rain on our land thus making it

    prosperous.

But Devendra does not give us rain, said Krishna, Govardhana hill stops the rain bearing clouds to shower the

beneficial water on our lands due to the conventional water cycle! If you must offer thanks to someone, offer thanks to

    Govardhana hill!

  • 45

The gopas immediately changed their plan and offered a mountain of rice, a pond full of curd and a well full of ghee to

Govardhana hill. Devendra felt very angry that Perumal had prevented him from getting his share. Overcome with

anger, Devendra caused rain to fall on Gokulam. Initially the people were happy but when it turned into severe hail

storm, they felt scared. Lord Krishna lifted up Govardhana Hill like an umbrella and protected everyone from Indras

fury. Lord Krishna could have easily stopped the rain but He wanted the people to praise Govardhana Hill. Lord

Krishna was very patient with Devendra and did not fight with Him. The Lords attitude towards Devendra was like

that of a mothers attitude towards her child throwing temper tantrums. Soon Devendra went through his stock of

water and as he ran dry, he realized his mistake. He apologized to the Lord and called Him as Upendra which meant

the assistant of Devendra. Even then the Lord was not angry and said that Devendra had meant to call Perumal as

his superior but due to slip of his tongue had called Perumal by mistake as his assistant. Devendra sought Perumals

boon to protect his son Arjuna as Lord Rama had killed Vali the son of Devendra during Ramavataram.

Later the children of Gokulam asked Perumal if He was an Asura, Deva, Yaksha or Gandharva since He had held the

huge hill on His little finger for seven whole days. To this Perumal replied that He was just one of them. Nachiar

praised Perumals supreme qualities and His weapons; she praised His unassuming nature especially after

performing such a super human feat!

    www.iskcondesiretree.net

As per Nachiars wishes Swami Vedanta Desikan composed the Paduka Sahasram to sing the praise of Perumals

thiruvadi. Even though the slokam is about Perumals paduka it is about His thiruvadi as Paduka Devi never leaves

Perumals thiruvadi. Paduka is always with Perumals thiruvadi just like the way in which Piratti is always with

  • 46

Perumal. Swami Vedanta Desikan also composed the Sudarsanashtakam to praise the weapons of the Lord. Vel in

this pasuram refers to weapons. Lord Vishnu is also the wielder of the spear as according to Skanda Puranam, Lord

Murugan performed a severe penance at Tirumala and obtained the spear from the Lord in order to kill an asuran

    with the Lords blessings.

As Nachiar finished singing the praise of Perumal, Perumal asked the gathering to make their requests.

    Alternate Meaning:

Shastras are called as ulagam. Lokam in Sanskrit is the name for that which is used to see things. The Tamil

translation of Lokam is Ulagam. Since we use Shastrams to see the things which cannot be seen normally,

Shastrams are called as lokams. From this Sanskrit word Lokam with its root Lok originated the English word look.

Acharyans measure the ulagam called shastras by stydying all the authentic texts. Like Rama who went to Lanka,

Acharyans go in search of disciples and help their disciples by freeing them from their body-prison which is similar to

Lanka. They shatter the wandering mind just like the way in which Lord Krishna shattered the wheel and bring the

mind under control. Arjuna is compared to a calf when he learnt Bagawad Geetha from Lord Krishna. Acharyans use

this calf called Arjuna to shower the fruit of knowledge on their disciples. Samsaric life is like a terrible rain storm; our

Acharyans teach us to seek refuge under the shade of Divya Desams like Tirumala. Our Acharyans use the authentic

Vedic texts as weapons to defeat the people who spread anti-Vedic thoughts against Perumal.

SRIVAISHNAVISM A BIRDS EYE VIEW ON THE LAWS OF MANU

    Mrs.LATHA SREEDHAR, M.A, M.Phil.

Lecturer, Department of Sanskrit,Srimad Andavan Arts & Science College,

    N0.7, Nelson Road, T.V.koil, Trichy-5.

CONTINUATION THE STRIKING LAWS FOUND SCATTERED IN THE MANU

In the explanation of the creation of the Universe, Manu says, The trees and plants immobile and germinating from seeds and

shooting forth from the stem are known as Udbhijja. The plants bearing plenty of fruits and flowers and perishing with the ripening of

fruits are known as Oshadhi. Trees are those which bear flowers and fruits both whereas Vanaspatis bear only fruits and no flowers.

Guccha, Gulma, Trna, Pratana and Valli are of various types and germinate past deeds, the immobile beings (the plants etc.,) are

obsessed with the Tamoguna (inertia) and have unmanifest consciousness and can feel pleasure and pain.

If desirous of long life, one should take food facing east, for fame facing south, for wealth west and for truth facing north.

Whatever food one gets, he should respectfully welcome and partake it without finding fault. He should feel happy to see it

and should wish to get it again and again. The well-received food always generates strength and vigour and in the way

otherwise, it destroys them. One should not give to anyone any remnants of food nor should he himself take it. In between

two meals any food should not be taken. One should not eat too much and he should go anywhere without washing his

mouth after meals. Excessive eating is bad for health and longevity. It must therefore be shunned.

One who always pays obeisance to his elders and always renders services to them, the following four longevity,

knowledge, fame and prowess are on the increase. An Acharya is ten times greater than Upadhyaya; the father is

hundred times greater than Acharya but a mother is thousand times greater in glory even than the father. The Gods

rejoice in the homes where women enjoy a respectful position. All rituals are fruitless where they are not adored.

The family or even the race perishes where women are in a deplorable condition. Where they are not so, such clans

advance towards prosperity. In the families where husband and wife have harmony between the two; the benediction is

  • 48

sure there. The women are worth adoring as they produce children and beautify the homes. They are benevolent also. A

good woman is equal to Goddess Lakshmi.

Urine, stool, sputum, any defiled or foul object, blood and poison should not be thrown in the waters. Nails should not be

uprooted or cut with the teeth. One should not scratch his head with the hands joined nor should he touch his head. One

should not speak with unwashed mouth and should not take bath without washing the head. After having head bath one

should not apply oil in any part of the body. One should get up in the Brahmamuhurtha.

There is nothing in the world as damaging ones life as enjoying woman other than ones own wife. One should

communicate even unpleasant things in a pleasant and modest way and should not develop enmity with anybody. A

person of evil conduct is condemned by the society. Righteous conduct is the only source of longevity and inexhaustible

    wealth.

The Atma is a real witness to all good or evil deeds of a person. The Atma is the only refuge to its own self. Therefore do

not disregard the Atma by speaking false which is the best witness of all beings. The sinners feel that nobody is watching

them but, there are gods who always watch and above all there is Atma abiding within everybody which is always

watchful. After committing a sin if a man sincerely repents and commits not to repeat that sin and stops doing such acts,

    he is purified.

This is a pivotal text of the dominant form of the Hinduism as it emerged historically and more compendiously than any

other text, it provides a direct line to the most influential construction of the Hindu religion and Indic society as a whole.

The text, in sum, an encompassing representation of life in the world how it is, and how it should be lived, (i.e., A model

of and a model for as Clifford Geertz would say). Smrti deals with only this aspect of Dharma. Manu is centered on the

smooth running of social life. Manu seems to be of opinion that even Moksha is possible only in a calm and peaceful

    society.

Manu is as relevant today as he was ever before because his ideas and concept are based on human nature. The

manusmrti constitutes the major corpus of Indian reflective thought with its enduring splendour and eternal human values.

It is the code of human conduct in which appears the whole system of law with definitions of good and bad actions and the

traditional practices of the four classes which are held to be eternal as they have been pronounced by the Vedas and the

smrtis. Any smrti and Manusmrti is not the exception, is the mirror of the social customs, rules and regulations prevalent

in the society in that particular period of time. Manu also had a canvas to draw his legal paintings. Whatever he taught

was the very truth of social nature in his time and mainly these were the social norms which he painted in his smrti. This is

the Sastra propounded by Manu and narrated by Bhrgu by reading which a twice-born becomes a man of character and

good conduct and achieves supreme abode.

live in Me always, without a doubt.

    TRANSLATION

My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind

upon Me without deviation, then follow the regulated principles

of bhakti-yoga. In this way you will develop a desire to attain to

    Me.

    RIVAISHNAVISM

    Ivargal Ti ruvaakku.

The serving serpent Adisesha, the serpent, is the bed and the seat of Lord Narayana and Goddess Mahalakshmi. Alavandar specifically mentions Adisesha as the bed of the Goddess too. There is reason for the emphasis, said Kidambi Narayanan in a lecture. It may be the man of the house who decides the pay of a servant, but it is the lady of the house, from whom the servant takes instructions on what work to do. So although Adisesha is the Lords servitor, he is also the Goddess servant.Adisesha has a thousand heads; this means he also has a thousand bodies. This further means that he can serve the Lord thousand fold. Adisesha is with the Lord always serving Him in every avatara of His, and in every way possible. He is an umbrella to the Lord, a seat, a soft bed.

In the Rama avatara, Adisesha came as Lakshmana, who did not sleep a wink, but kept watch over his brother, for the 14 years of His sojourn in the forest. In the Krishna avatara, Adisesha came as Balarama, Krishnas elder brother. Lakshmana tells Rama that if he were to be separated from the Lord, he (Lakshmana) will die, just as surely as Sita would. Lakshmana says that he and Sita, if separated from Rama, would die the very moment they are separated.

Fish thrown out of water may take a few seconds to die, but Lakshmana and Sita separated from Rama would not last even a second. He is determined to serve his brother in all countries, and to be by His side always.

When the Rama avatara is about to end, Rama tells Lakshmana that His earthly sojourn is coming to a close. Lakshmana, knowing that he will be unable to bear the pangs of separation, enters the Sarayu river, and ends his stay on this Earth, before Rama leaves this world.

To Lakshmna, Rama takes precedence over everyone else. Rama, to the devoted Lakshmana, is mother, father and God all rolled into one.

When Dasaratha banishes Rama to the forest, Lakshmana reacts in anger. It is rarely that anyone thinks of the Lords welfare above all else. We petition Him for favours all the time, but to think of His comfort is the noble trait of Adisesha.
