ZIGGY’S WISDOM: Some things matter; some things really don’t. Things that don’t: Your type of breakfast cereal, sox length, shoe color, flavor of chewing gum. You get the idea. Please read on… ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS Things that really, really matter include: Loving God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves; spend-ing some time in prayer…daily; living each day honestly, not giv-ing in to evil. You get the “drift.” Pay attention to the things that will determine your destination…HEAVEN!

From the Desk Of Fr. John Lent is moving on so quickly…already past midway. We now prepare for Holy Week…Holy Thursday…Good Friday…Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil leading us into Easter Sun-day. The six weeks seem long, and then the time passes and we are at the Great Mysteries and the Festivities of Christ’s victory. We realize that the time has been for the prepa-ration of those who look forward to baptism and full communion with the Church. But, it has also been our time of renewal…repentance…and re-commitment. As we arrive at Easter, we will all be invited to make our profession of faith…and renew our baptismal vows and promises. The time spent in prayer and listening to the word of God…has attuned us to be more sensitive to the call of God’s love and service to others. We have grown as committed and intentional disci-ples. May the Lord bless these final days in prepara-tion so that we can celebrate with open minds and hearts, aware of the great gift we have re-ceived in Christ and His victory of sin and death. There is a saying…You are known by the company you keep…is it true all of the time? There were many complaints circulating around…more than rumors…outright criticisms and condemnations. They were all aimed at Je-sus because of the company He was keeping…tax collectors and sinners. Did that make Him one of them…or was He reaching out to them as His Father had sent him to do? But, it is obvious that He was being judged for being open and accepting of them. They were even accusing Him of disregarding the Law…though that was not really obvious. Jesus began His ministry with a visit to His hometown Nazareth. There He read from the Prophet Isaiah these words… ‘The spirit of the Lord is upon me, and He has anointed me…to bring glad tidings to the poor, sight to the blind, freedom to prisoners, liberty to captives…’ Je-sus carried out this mission of reaching out and reconciling those estranged from God and gath-ering them into the fold again.

Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son makes the point very clear…the sinners are being wel-comed and reconciled. Those who…like the el-der son of the story…refuse to forgive or wel-come are at odds with the Father who is merciful and forgiving. I used the famous painting of Rembrant ‘The return of the prodigal son’ to il-lustrate the point of the depth of compassion and love of the Father for both of his sons…wanting them both to be reconciled with him and each other. We are called to be ‘ambassabors for Christ-reconciliation’ for and to each other and our world. The mercy of God welcomes us…now we are to live and share it generously. We know what a trap means. It is setting someone up to be caught. The law does not look kindly upon such activity. But we do have security cameras…and all that goes with that…in order to protect people and to catch those who are performing illegal actions against per-sons or their property. The scene in the Gospel for today is a set up. An unhappy husband…and maybe more than unhappy…sets the scene to catch his ‘wife’ in a sexual crime. The story we have in John’s Gospel sounds more like it comes from the Lukan tradition…but it does have its impact on all of us. There is a woman who is caught in the act of adultery…infidelity to her husband. Once she is caught in the act, she is brought before Jesus for judge-ment. That is a very serious charge and has huge consequences…death by stoning. Jesus recognizes the trap that is being set for Him…and the total insensitivity of those accusing her…she is a pawn in this trap and not a person to be respected and helped. Jesus uses the time and the situation to help the accusers to realize that they have no room to condemn her…nor does Jesus condemn her… ‘Go and sin no more…!

Lent 2019

THANK YOU! Many thanks to all supporters of our Spring ABL / St. Vincent de Paul Fundraiser. You gen-erously donated $2,838! The list of supporters of the fundraiser was an insert in the March 24 bulletin. Donations received were to be split be-tween St. Vincent De Paul So-ciety and the ABL Pregnancy Center. It was patterned after the for-mer Pro-Life Signature Page Ad Campaign that had run in the Belleville News Democrat in years past, which was dropped as ad costs had be-come prohibitive. Supporters names and memo-rials to loved ones were to have been accompanied by the form to be published. The published list was NOT intend-ed to recognize all past donors to the ABL or St. Vincent De Paul, just those who participat-ed in this specific campaign. We apologize for any confu-sion.

Help the Catholic Home Missions Appeal

Next weekend, you have the opportunity to assist the Cath-olic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40% of dio-ceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pas-toral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this ap-peal.

Divine Mercy The Feast of Divine Mercy Sunday is the Sunday after Easter. In preparation for the Feast, we are to recite the novena which consists in say-ing the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy for 9 days. The novena begins on Good Friday. The Lord Jesus said to Sister Faustina: The Feast of My Mercy has issued forth from My very depths for the conso-lation of the whole world (Diary 1517).

Pamphlets about the Divine Mercy Sunday and Novena can be found at the church doors. The Divine Mercy Cenacle meets every first and third Wednesday in Morris Hall at 1pm.
