BBeyond the Zealous Advocate

Prior to entering the seminary in 2003, I practiced law for over twenty years. My duty was to represent my clients faithfully, to advise them to the best of my ability, and to do nothing that would harm them. Different rules of professional conduct described the ideal attorney’s role -- to represent a client with diligence, commit-ment, and dedication or, my favorite, with zeal in advocacy. What is a zealous advocate? A zealous advocate is one who does all that is humanly possible to intercede for the client, to protect the client from harm, and to obtain the best result for the client. A zealous advocate does not think first of what the client can do for him, or how much money the client can pay. Rather, the zealous advocate makes service to the client the greatest priority, even if such service interferes with the advocate’s personal life. A zealous advocate is one to be sought after and treasured. Yet, for all of the good qualities of such an advocate, there are some things that even a zealous advocate will not do. Although he will never abandon a client outright, he can substitute another advocate for himself if the client refuses to follow his advice, engages in criminal or other unlawful behavior, or, heaven forbid, fails to pay him his fee. Moreover, no matter how zealous the advocate claims to be, he will not willingly and freely give his life for his client. The readings for this Sunday describe an Advocate, in fact two Advocates, who are beyond zealous. In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus is the Advocate who enables Philip to cure the paralyzed and disabled; Jesus is the Advocate whose healing presence gives the city of Samaria great joy. For the audience hearing the first Letter of Peter, Jesus is the reason for their hope; whose suffering and death on the cross makes all suffering redemptive and transforms the unrighteous into the righteous. He brings us to life in the Spirit and leads us to God. The second Advocate is no less impressive. In John’s Gospel, Jesus promises to send us another Advo-cate, the Spirit of truth, the love between the Father and the Son that is so perfect and real that it is the Third Per-son of the Trinity. This Advocate never abandons us, but remains in us and sustains us in both sorrow and joy. By the presence and action of this Advocate, all peoples, regardless of origin, race, language, gender, culture, nation, age, socio-economic status, sophistication, talent or intellect – are brought together into one family and made part of that real and perfect love that unites the Father and the Son. What these two Advocates, the Christ and the Spirit, offer us – healing, presence, love, forgiveness, truth, transformation, patient endurance in suffering, righteousness, participation in the divine family – cannot be bought. They are absolute gifts, which are completely outside of our understanding, merit, and ability to pay, made possible by Advocates who go beyond being simply zealous. They have made the Church and accompanied her lovingly and protected her faithfully throughout millennia of wars, natural disasters, human follies, and, yes, even pandemics. For this reason, we do not hesitate to join today’s psalmist’s jubilant shout: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy! Easter Blessings, Fr. Chris

DID YOU KNOW? Protect young people from cyberbullying

Cyberbullying can happen at any time, on any online platform. It can take many forms – cruel direct messages, threatening emails, mean texts, shared photos, and more. Victims of cyber-bullying often suffer from anxiety and depression, and their self-esteem can be diminished. They may be reluctant to talk about bullying, so parents need to be on top of all their children’s online activities. Asking ques-tions and getting information about popular apps and sites will help, too. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Cyber-Bullying: Protecting Young People from Technology Dangers” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

COVID-19 Updates As public authorities and our Archbishop José H. Gomez continue to struggle with the challenges posed by COVID-19, Archbishop Gomez provided the following updates on Wednesday, May 13: The dispensation from the obligation for Catholics to at-tend Sunday Mass is extended until further notice. The dispensation was set to expire May 15. The dispensation was extended, in part, because of the decision of the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health to continue the Safer at Home Order through July 31. The Archbishop’s primary concern is the safety of the parishioners. He does not want to expose parishioners to the possibility of contracting COVID-19, a life-threatening virus, if the churches are opened prematurely. He is consulting with the public health departments of the three counties (Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles) that comprise the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. One of the challenges the Archbishop is facing is that the three coun-ties have issued different regulations, containing different restrictions concerning public gatherings and the health and safety protocols that govern such gatherings. The Archbishop is working with the three counties to come up with a common plan that can be applied across the Arch-diocese. The Archbishop is also consulting with the Auxiliary Bishops and the Council of Priests for the Archdiocese to prepare a plan for the eventual re-opening of the church-es. Depending on the success (or lack thereof) of the ef-forts to contain the spread of the virus, the re-opening of the churches will occur in stages. Before the first Mass, and after each subsequent Mass, the churches will have to be sanitized. Most likely, those who come to Mass will have to wear masks, maintain social distancing, use hand sanitizer before going to communion, and receive com-munion only in the hand. The Blood of Christ will not be offered until it is safe to do so. The sacraments of First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Marriage and Reconciliation continue to be suspended until further notice. When Confirmations are allowed, the confirming Bishop will contact the pastor of the parish to determine how many Masses will be necessary and when they will occur. Because of the large number of Confir-mations, the Bishop may delegate the pastor to do some or all of the Confirmations at a particular parish.

We continue to pray for the successful containment of COVID-19, for the development of a safe and effective vaccine, and for the health and safety of all of our parish-ioners. May our loving God embrace us with his love, protect us from harm, dispel our fears, and bless us abun-dantly, through his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, the health of the sick and the cause of our joy. Fr. Chris

P. Chris
