An Easter Unlike Any Other This is an Easter unlike any within living memory. For as long as I can remember, Easter has always been celebrated with the community. The churches are packed to overflowing; the choirs sing like angels and inspire us to give worship and praise to the Risen One; the Word of God is proclaimed with joy to thirsting ears; the Easter Alleluias ring out and lift us up to heaven itself. But not this year, or at least not in the way we have become accustomed. This year, the churches are closed to public celebrations. This year, the choirs are not assembled. This year, the Word is proclaimed to empty pews. This year the Alleluias are silent. Indeed, this is an Easter like no other. The COVID-19 virus has wreaked havoc with our world, our country, our state, our city, and even with the way we worship. It has forced us apart and to be fearful of our neighbor, lest our neighbor be a harbinger of serious illness. It has confined us to our homes, afraid to go out. A lot of things we have taken for granted – getting together with friends, going to our offices to work, taking a leisurely stroll in the park or on a trail, going out to dinner, gathering at Sunday Mass -- are now suddenly … gone or severely restricted. And yet, perhaps amidst the many disruptions and problems caused by COVID-19, the hidden gift of this challenging moment is the realization of just how many things we take for granted, especially where our faith is involved, and to learn to appreciate them anew, to awaken in our hearts a new passion to live the message of Easter. For the message of Easter, even an Easter unlike any other, has not changed, despite the circumstances in which we find ourselves. The message of Easter is still the one proclaimed by Peter in today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles: in the midst of terrible times, when they put him to death by hanging him on a tree, Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, and all who believe in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name. Nothing can change the reality of God’s love for us – not sin, not death, and certainly not COVID-19! The message of Easter is still the one Paul exhorts the Corinthians and Colossians to follow: because our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed (and raised from the dead), let us leave behind our sinful lives, our indifference, our selfishness and put on Christ. Let us celebrate this Easter, this Easter unlike any other, not on automatic pilot, but with sincerity and truth, with a reawakened passion for living Easter, for living as a people of the Resurrection, casting aside malice and wickedness. As passionate Christians, we are not content to follow the example of a world that despairs and expects the worst, because it believes only in itself and, therefore, can imagine no future but death. Rather, we are that fresh batch of dough that seeks and trusts in God’s infinite mercy because Christ, raised from the dead, is seated at the right hand of God, and when he appears again, we, too, will appear with him in glory. That is our future, not death, but eternal life and glory, because we believe in the risen Christ. The message of Easter is still the one that the Gospel and the Easter Sequence announce. Mary of Magdala, grief-ridden by the crucifixion of her Lord and Master and perplexed by the empty tomb, now exults, for she has encountered the risen Lord, who lives! Speak, Mary, declaring what you saw. Her response, which is still our response, more than 2,000 years later: Yes, Christ, my hope, is risen! So, my dearly beloved brothers and sisters, celebrate with passion and joy this Easter, which is like no other Easter. The pews may be empty, but the Word of God is still proclaimed to all who will hear it. The choirs may not be assembling, but our songs of praise and joy can still shake the roofs and walls of our homes and neighborhoods. And don’t forget to shout Alleluia, if not in the church, then from your rooftop, so that all the world may know and come to believe: Yes, Christ, my hope is risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! This may be an Easter unlike any other, but it is still the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad! Easter blessings and health to all, Fr. Chris

UPDATES ON CORONA VIRUS IMPACT

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

As our state, county and national leaders continue efforts to stem the spread of the corona virus, our Archbishop, Most Reverend José H. Gomez, has directed parishes as follows:

The public celebration of Mass has been suspended through April 19, 2020, or as otherwise extended.

All churches throughout the Archdiocese are closed to the public effective March 24, 2020, through April 19, 2020, or until further notice. We encourage you to view the Mass via livestream, which can be done by going to facebook.com/lacatholics. Links to additional Masses can be found at lacatholics.org/mass-for-the-homebound or www.st-augustine-church.org.

Other ways of observing Sunday: read the Gospels, pray with your families, join yourself to the sacrifice of the Mass by making an act of spiritual communion.

Church offices are closed to the public until further notice.

All regularly scheduled confession times are suspended. Priests may offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation only in danger of death or extremely extraordinary circumstances. No confessions are to be of-fered by telephone, electronic means, or by “drive-up.” The faithful have a duty to confess serious sins once a year (Code of Canon Law 989), but not in any particular season.

Unless there is an emergency, the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism is postponed, including baptism at the Easter Vigil.

The celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony is postponed through April 19, 2020, or until further notice.

Funerals may take place only in the form of The Rite of Committal with Final Commendation (also known as the grave service). If desired by the family, a memorial Mass may be scheduled appropriately at a later date.

All Confirmations from now until Easter have been postponed. Rescheduling will be handled at a later time.

HOLY WEEK: The Archbishop will celebrate the Chrism Mass (April 6, 2020) and the liturgies of the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday) at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Instead of attending, priests and faithful are encouraged to view the Cathedral’s livestream of the Masses at face-book.com/lacatholics. There will be no public celebration of the Triduum Masses in the parishes.

We continue to pray for a speedy resolution of the difficulties caused by the corona virus and for the health and safety of all.

Blessings,

Fr. Chris

Bendiciones, P. Chris
