We stand at the Crossroads of life for many people

Our Vocations in the Church Today

Each of is has responded to the question & call of Jesus: Do you Love Me? Come Follow Me! Now! Baptism was the gateway to our be-longing in Christ. And the more we have followed, the more we are con-vinced that The Way of Jesus is the right way. Our parents chose Baptism for us. We chose to confir-mation. Everything else flows from this. Living in our Parish are some great men and women who have responded to another call, the call to Religious Life. The years have matured many of them, but they are not over. They continue to respond to the call of Jesus: Come

Follow Me. Also living in our Parish in semi-retirement is a long serving priest, Mons Vince Redden. He as-sists part time in local parishes as the need arises. These Are Some of Our Religious Sr Pat

Bowthorpe FMM is a Franciscan Missionary Sister who has served in Nth Africa, a Christian in a Muslim environ-ment. And Our Passionists Sr Elena Daton CP is a Passionist Sister of St Paul of the Cross from the Philippines. A quiet yet industri-ous pastoral min-ister, she is found in the middle of all parish events. Elena is also the Leader of her sisters in Australia. Fr John Auram CP is a Passionist from PNG. Beginnings In 1720, the 26 year old man Paul Francis Danei, made a private vow in Our Lady’s Chapel of the Ba-silica of St Mary Major in Rome, to gather Companions, and to promote the Living Memory of the Passion, the greatest sign of God’s love. He was quickly joined by his brother, John Baptist Danei. They began a journey of faith and life to-gether, in fact they lived in the same communities in Rome, Monte Argen-tario and Vetralla for much of their lives. Consolidation

Others came and joined the brothers Danei, including another of their brothers. But it wasn't the life for them and they left. Others perse-vered and the group grew and ex-panded from Tuscany and into Rome and the Naples areas. Through the help of some great benefactors, they were able to work with the poorest in the marche lands of Tuscany, amongst people other clergy rejected. Their message was one of hope, one of inclusion, for the love of God embraced all people. At the time of Paul’s death in 1775, the Passionists were centred in Italy. This was to change after he died. Destruction

With the invasion of Napoleon 25 years later, the Passionists were dispersed like all other religious, sent to their home villages. This was a time of great turmoil for the Church, with the repression of Napoleon’s armies. Nut you can’t silence the Good News forever. Refounding & Expansion Once Napoleon was defeated, many, not all, of these men returned to the monasteries, and restarted their religious lives and mission once again. By the 1840’s Passionists had moved into Northern Europe, England

and Ireland, USA and Australia. Now in 2015, our members live and work across more than 50 coun-tries. And in each Region, there is a greater co-operation for the mission that we share together. New Forms of Passionist Life In the 295 since the foundation of the Passionists, new forms of Pas-sionist life have flourished. We see the various sisters congregations af-filiated with us who have flourished. Across the world there are many lay associates and benefactors, some in groups, others on their own. All call themselves Passionists. In several countries young people associate with us under the banner of Passionist Youth, or PaYo. In the USA young graduates volunteer for a year of service as Passionist Volunteers, either in Ja-maica West Indies, or in West Virgin-ia. And the original group, aka the Congregation of the Passion, while seeming to die in the west, we are flourishing in Africa and in Asia. Passionist Saints

The picture above features the Passionist Saints of our time. Many were martyrs in times of war. Most of

these were in the Spanish Civil War. One was a Bishop in Bulgaria. Passionist Vocations Today

In our Province of the Holy Spirit, taking in Australia, New Zea-land, Papua New Guinea and Vi-etnam, has a growing group of stu-dents. We have 35 students in Ho Chi Minh City who we are supporting. We have others in Port Moresby and we are exploring more accommodation there. In Australia our international Novitiate in Adelaide has students from Korea, Chine, Vietnam and PNG. Our student house in Mel-bourne has men from Australia, Chi-na and PNG. The multicultural mix in each of these places is bringing out the best in all of us. The new partnerships with the Passionist Sisters in Sydney, Mel-bourne and Adelaide is also a great blessing for us. Passionists for Tomorrow The resurgence of Vocations is a sign of hope for us, as we know the Mission of Jesus, the Word of hope in times of personal suffering , is sorely needed. Passionists, both priests, brothers, sisters and lay associates share this mission today.

New Pastoral Council & Youth Action

On 28 July the Pastoral Council met for the changeover, which occurs at this time of the year. We recog-nised the generous contribution of John Skinner (Co-Chair), Mary Cloran and Michael Ward who have completed 4 continuous years on Council. Thanks for the great effort you put into Council, Committees & Parish Life and will continue to do so. We also welcomed new mem-bers, Jessica Hartany and Darren

Dela Rosa. Parish Members on Council are now: Adrien Harverson, Arthur Kassis, Bec Wong, Jessica Hartany, John Kevin, Michael Daher, Noelene Fernandez, Paige Bullen. The Co-Chairs are now Paige Bullen, Noelene Fernandez and Peter Jennings. The Council endorsed the new developments in youth ministry and offered support to Darren and the Parish Support Group (Adrien Harverson, Michael Ward, Pedro Moreira & Vanessa Penitani). The recent starting of the Teens Youth Group has been very successful, with a good mix of fun, liturgical engagement, and social out-reach planned for the future. Peter Gardiner sent a report from the USA that the two Immersion Experiences in Cambodia & Vietnam will go ahead after Christmas, as will the WYD Pilgrimage in July 2016.

Date Claimer: Centenary of the

Opening of the Monastery On 14th November 1915, the newly acquired Shrubland House was opened as the beginning of the pre-sent Passionist Monastery buildings. It was a grand affair, with significant notable people in attendance. By 1921, this 2 story structure

was expanded to be a 3 story build-ing with most of the present Church attached. The front of the Church and tower were added in the 1950’s. The Pastoral Council has start-ed planning a Mass (10.30am) and Parish Picnic in the grounds on 15th November, a fun day for all the fami-ly. Please put his on your calendar.

Change to Weekday Parking for Church and School

From last Monday the school is trialling a closure of the car park from 2-3.30pm, due to traffic con-gestion and safety issues for pedes-trians. This trial is for 3 weeks, after which we will review it. This comes after discussions with the Police, Council and CEO safety people.
