Each Mass is structured on the Road to Emmaus travelogue. Two men set off on a journey of their own making. At the beginning of Mass we confess that we have gone off course. The traveller helps the men on the road to Emmaus understand what had happened to Jesus of Nazareth by showing Gods plan revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the Liturgy of the Word, we hear Scriptures ex- pounded, revealing more fully the true identity of Jesus of Nazareth. Every so often you will experience the burning sensation in your heart as something that is said hits home. The traveller takes bread, blesses it, and gives it to them to eat. In that moment of bread-sharing, the two men recognised their travelling com- panion as the Risen Lord. Eat the bread consecrated at Mass, and we receive into our very being the Divine Companion for our journey through life. We could pause for a moment to thank God for the privilege at every Mass of having our eyes opened so that we recognise Our Risen Lord Je- sus Christ in the breaking of the bread. Leader: May your people exult for ever, O God, We ask this through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Leader: Let us listen to God’s Word… Reader: A reading from the Gospel of Luke (24:15-35) The Walk to Emmaus Two of the disciples of Jesus were on their way to a village called Emmaus and they were talking about all that had hap-pened. Now as they talked this over, Je-sus himself came up and walked by their side; but something prevented them from recognising him. He said to them, ‘What matters are you discussing as you walk along?’ They stopped short, their faces downcast. Then one of them, called Cleopas, an-swered him, ‘You must be the only per-son staying in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have been happen-ing there these last few days.’ ‘What things?’ he asked. ‘All about Jesus of Nazareth’ they answered ‘who proved he was a great prophet by the things he said and did in the sight of God and of the whole people; and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had him crucified. Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not all: two whole days have gone by since it all happened; and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning, and when they did not find the body, they came back to tell us they had seen a vision of angels who declared he was alive. Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but of him they saw nothing.’ Then he said to them, ‘You foolish men! So slow to believe the full message of the prophets! Was it not ordained that the Christ should suffer and so enter into his glory?’ Then, starting with Moses and going through all the prophets, he ex-plained to them the passages through-out the scriptures that were about him-self. When they drew near to the village to which they were going, he made as if to go on; but they pressed him to stay with them.

Prayer Intentions for this week

‘It is nearly evening’ they said ‘and the day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them. Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had van-ished from their sight. Then they said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?’ They set out that instant and re-turned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled together with their companions, who said to them, ‘Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen and has ap-peared to Simon.’ Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at the breaking of bread. The Gospel of the Lord Family Discussions: What would you say to Jesus if he

was beside you? When have you wanted Jesus to

stay close to you? Intercessions: Let us turn to God with our hearts open in faith and pray for those in need. That people who are isolated will be

filled with the comfort of Christ the risen saviour. We pray especially for those experiencing isolation during the coronavirus restrictions. Lord hear us.

That those living with the fear of

disease will find a sense of calm and shelter in Christ. We especially pray for people who are sick from the coronavirus.

Pray that we will be able to recog-nise Jesus in our everyday lives.

We pray for parents struggling with home schooling and for teachers at schools that are open. May they find the resources they need to meet these new challenges.

Individual intentions….. All: God our Father, the disciples recog-nised Jesus at the breaking of bread. Hear our prayers and help us to always cherish your presence when we gather at the Eucharistic table. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

As you know the Parish relies upon the generosity of Parishioners to support both the operation of the Parish and its ministries. In 2019 the Parish raised $23,000 from donations across the Easter weekend through the gener-ous support of both Parishoners and visitors. These donations are critical in supporting the ongoing costs of operating the Parish (2nd collection) and supporting the ministry of the Passionist Fathers (1st collection) across the whole year. Given that the Church is physi-cally closed for Easter this year we are making a special appeal for di-rect donations. Donations can be made directly via EFT to the Parish bank account details below. We also hope to have an online donation fa-cility via the Parish website opera-tional shortly. All EFT donations should be referenced “Easter Appeal” and will be allocated 70% to St Brigid’s Parish and 30% to the Passionists Fathers. We once again commend this appeal to your generosity at this very difficult time.
