Ways of coming to know and love

He made us with the desire to know and love him. “The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to him-self” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 27). That is incredible if you think about it. What’s even better is that God gives us a capacity to know and love him through the world, through the human person and through divine revelation. We come to know God naturally through his creation. When we recognize how cool a tree works, when we see the beauty of the fall leaves or breathe fresh fall air we can come to the knowledge that God loves us back by giving us these great gifts in which we offer praise. When you get a chance, praise the Father creator of heaven and earth with the song of Daniel and you will understand what I am talking about. We can also come to know God through our soul. When we are open to truth, beauty, good morals and real happiness we ques-tion wit in ourselves something greater than ourselves. We can reason that there is a creator and that we are moving toward something greater than this life, our final end. We begin to man-ifest this spiritual reality through religious practice. This has gone on from the beginning of human existence. We are more than spiritual being, we are in fact religious beings. This is why there are so many religions today and throughout human histo-ry. We have this much in common, a desire to show gratitude for beauty, truth, good and moral behavior. Lastly we Catholics come to know God most fully through Divine Revelation. This is needed to straighten out the confusion that can come from knowing God only through nature and the hu-man person. But we will look at this aspect of knowing and lov-ing God next week.

Fr. Jeff

Padre Jeff
