Its an important question because the answer we provide will reveal a great deal about where our hearts lie. Our requests of God can often appear very noble and altruistic. They consist of requests for healing for someone in need of prayers, successful resolution of a personal conflict, assistance in overcoming a disease and myriad other desires for both ourselves and others. We are especially concerned about those we love and can easily find ourselves bringing their struggles to God for a hearing in our prayer. Is that really all that prayer is about? The woman in todays Gospel, having been put in her place by Jesus, was only looking out for the wellbeing of her sons. She was doing what mothers do, protecting and securing the livelihood of her children. But she was sadly mistaken, her request was not granted. We all make this same misguided mistake from time to time. The goal of prayer is not to convince God of the worthiness of our agenda or to gain a hearing. Sometimes we believe that the more we multiply our prayers or discover the right combination of supplications that we will receive more of Gods attention. Thats not how it works. Even though God desires to hear, know, and be an intimate part of what is on our minds, it goes much deeper. What we need from God is a relationship. Its a relationship that guides and immerses us in the very stuff of life and in the direction of the Gospel. This relationship sees Gods kingdom and agenda, not our own, as what is most important. It builds the strength of character necessary to bring Gods Gospel into a world that may not receive it with open arms. It may cause us discomfort and suffering. We are asked to heroically journey with God through suffering, hardship, ridicule, and even death! Ultimately, our desire from God must become our desire for God. It is only when this happens that the powerful words thy will be donewill be found with sincerity and humility on our lips. Whatever God wishes becomes what we wish as we see this glorious union of wills. Our humble lives will then become powerful witnesses, and what happens to us in Gods eternal kingdom the result of his mercy. We become true servants and find ourselves discovering Gods definition of success. That definition has nothing at all to do with status, income, or privilege.

“What do you wish me to do for you?” Whether we realize it, this is a question God is always asking. It’s an important question because the answer we provide will reveal a great deal about where our hearts lie. The woman in today’s Gospel, having been put in her place by Jesus, was only looking out for the wellbeing of her sons. She was doing what mothers do, protecting and securing the livelihood of her children. But she was sadly mistaken, her request was not granted. We all make this same misguided mistake from time to time. The goal of prayer is not to convince God of the worthiness of our agenda or to gain a hearing. Sometimes we believe that the more we multiply our prayers or discover the right combination of supplications that we will receive more of God’s attention. That’s not how it works. Even though God desires to hear, know, and be an intimate part of what is on our minds, it goes much deeper. What we need from God is a relationship. World Mission Sunday—October 23rd/24th World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for the Catholic Church throughout the world to publicly renew its commitment to the missionary movement. It was created by Pope Pius XI in

1926 as the day of prayer for missions. Please be as generous. Use the envelope in your October packet, pick up an envelope in the Gathering Area, or just place your check or cash in the basket provided for this purpose at the back of the sanctuary. Thank you!

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND Build your marriage on solid rock . . . How well can your marriage withstand the storms of this life? A Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend is an opportunity to strengthen the foundation of your marriage. Grounded in the love of Jesus Christ, the weekend will provide you the tools and the time necessary to go deeper into the Sacrament so that you can live more intimately and responsibly as a couple of God. Make plans now to attend the weekend of March 18th-20th, 2022 at the Congregation of the Mother of the Redeemer in Carthage, MO. For more information, or to register for a weekend, visit www.wwme.org, or call/Email Kim Brayman at 417.866.0841/ [email protected].

SEAS 13th ANNUAL FALL BAZAAR - 2021 Sponsored by the SEAS

Parish Council of Catholic Women Saturday, November 6, 9:00 am-6:00 pm Sunday, November 7, 8:00 am-2:00 pm

You will not want to miss out on this year’s PCCW Fall Bazaar! There will be numerous vendors with a variety of

crafts, a bake sale, raffle tickets, lunch items and much more. The PCCW ladies have organized a great event, so be sure to make plans now to attend. It’s always a fun way to purchase Christmas gift items for family and friends (and “anytime” gift items for yourself)!

DISPENSATION FROM MASS LIFTED

Bishop Rice has recently lifted the general dispensation from Mass that had been in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All are welcomed back to Mass unless you are unable to attend due to having a compromised immune system or are caring for someone who has a compromised immune system. For the parishioners who must refrain from crowds, for those reasons, the weekend Livestream schedule for Mass is still the same at 9:00am on Sundays. We are praying that we see everyone back in church soon as we strive to return to normalcy. SEAS remains committed to protecting the health and well-being of our parishioners and community. You are not required to wear a mask while you are in the building or during Mass. However, we are a mask-friendly place. If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask, you are welcome to do so.

Thoughts From Fr. Tom One Positive Thing "There are many negative things that can be said about James and John," writes William Barclay. "They were nakedly ambitious and proud: they wanted, and believed they deserved, places of honor in Jesus' kingdom. They were ignorant and insensitive: their request for places of honor came right after Jesus had told of His coming suffering and death. But there's one positive thing you can say about James and John: they believed in Jesus. Here was a poor, homeless, persecuted carpenter and yet James and John believed Jesus was a king. They believed that He would conquer the power structure of Rome." Even their crude ambition reflected their faith in Christ.

William Barclay, The Gospel of Mark, pp. 254, 255.

Caring Service and Its Impact A room-service waiter at a Marriott hotel learned that the sister of a guest had just died. The waiter, named Charles, bought a sympathy card, had hotel staff members sign it, and gave it to the distraught guest with a piece of hot apple pie. "Mr. Marriott," the guest later wrote to the president of Marriott Hotels, "I'll never meet you. And I don't need to meet you. Because I met Charles. I know what you stand for. ... I want to assure you that as long as I live, I will stay at your hotels. And I will tell my friends to stay at your hotels."

Roger Dow and Susan Cook, Turned On, (New York: Harper Business, 1996).

Service Keeps Us Alive Unamuno, the Spanish philosopher, tells about the Roman aqueduct at Segovia, in his native Spain. It was built in 109 A.D. For eighteen hundred years, it carried cool water from the mountains to the hot and thirsty city. Nearly sixty generations of men drank from its flow. Then came another generation, a recent one, who said, "This aqueduct is so great a marvel that it ought to be preserved for our children, as a museum piece. We shall relieve it of its centuries-long labor." They did; they laid modern iron pipes. They gave the ancient bricks and mortar a reverent rest. And what happened to the aqueduct? It began to begin to fall apart. The sun beating on the dry mortar caused it to crumble. The bricks and stone sagged and threatened to fall. What ages of service could not destroy idleness disintegrated.
