LENTEN REGULATIONS Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent is fast approaching. This beautiful season calls each one of us to true conversion. The penitential season of Lent calls all of us to perform acts of repentance through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Since Lent retains its ancient penitential character, the faithful should be reminded to make the entire Lenten season a period of special observance through the three practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence in the United States. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obligated to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. As a general rule, a request for dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.
People are not property. We cannot exchange them at will or simply use them for our own designs and purposes. What does the word “commitment” mean to you? We can begin to understand its meaning by looking at some synonyms: dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty, faithfulness, fidelity and bond. Commitment is primarily about relationship and Jesus is all about relationships … how our lives affect others, how we treat our brothers and sisters, how we resolve conflict and how we view the vows of marriage. Jesus’ teachings on obeying the commandments, murder, reconciliation, marriage, divorce and adultery all stem from the sacredness of commitment. All of this has a God connection. We can easily see one another as interchangeable and dispensable. We treat so much of our lives this way. What works today may not be what I want tomorrow. We search and search for the right things only to find our hearts still restless in the end. Is real happiness achievable this side of the grave? Sometimes we expect too much out of others and want our relationships to fill a hole that we must figure out how to fill ourselves. Any seasoned married couple will tell you that their love for one another changes as time passes. Even though the understanding of romance changes as life changes, the dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty, faithfulness and fidelity all remain and even deepen. Some relationships can be hurtful and God does not want us to live with abuse or pain. Also, how a relationship develops is sometimes out of our control and we become the victim of someone else’s decision. But we can’t be self-focused in our relationships and see them exclusively as self-fulfilling ends. We are companions on life’s journey with varying depths of relationships being enjoyed by all who are with us along the way. We have the freedom to choose. God asks us to do so wisely with right judgement and thinking.
COLD AND FLU SEASON PRECAUTIONS Now that the cold and flu season is upon us, out of concern, please do not feel obligated to drink from the cup at Holy Communion or shake hands at the Sign of Peace. A friendly wave, nod, or greeting is acceptable.

Mardi Gras-Did you know? The King Cake is baked in a circle to portray the routes the Wise Men took to confuse Herod and his soldiers and foil any attempts to kill the Christ Child. The BEADS. The actual tradition of the Mardi Gras beads had their roots in prayer. Beads have long been associated with praying and marking prayer. These beads are meant to remind you of your promise of a “change-of-heart” during Lent. As you place the beads around your neck commit yourself to that change. The bead colors, those of the liturgical season, were meant to remind the Christian that purple was a sign of justice that we often find through prayer and fasting and other acts of Penance. The green color symbolizes service and to put your faith and trust in God. Gold reminds us to pray and share the riches, both those tangible and those of the heart, with others. Let each of the beads on the strand serve as the acts of repentance that you will work towards throughout Lent. If you find yourself on the receiving end of beads, hang the beads where you are able to see them and throughout Lent let them be a reminder to you of your commitment to this change. TRY MAKING YOUR OWN MARDI GRAS “BEADS” WITH ...
An assortment of pasta shapes, with holes, which can be "strung" like beads — Purple and green poster or acrylic paints Gold acrylic or spray paint. — Shoelaces, yarn or string.
Instructions:
Sort the pasta into three roughly equal groups and paint each group with one of the traditional Mardi Gras colors. If you have very young chidren involved, expect them to get very messy, but to have a great time!
For the gold "beads" it is easiest to use a gold spray paint. Either delegate this to an older child (supervised) or do it yourself, using plenty of newspaper and be in a well-ventilated room or outdoors. Spray one side of the pasta, wait for it to dry, then spray the other side.
When the pasta is dry you can assemble your necklaces. Tape one end of your string to the table to make it easier. Use the opportunity for some counting practice.
Make sure that the pasta is completely dry before you let the kids
put their necklaces on!

EWTN Spring Highlights Brochures, featuring the latest schedules for Television, Radio, News, Online & Publishing are on the bulletin tables. Pick one up to stay connected.
Lent will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 26. We invite our parishioners and visitors attending St. Clare of Assisi Church to stop at the large wooden cross that will be located in front of the church. There will be slips of white paper (signifying the Lord’s loin cloth), red push pins (signifying the blood our Lord shed for us) and pens that are on
the altar rail. Feel free to write a note of your Lenten intention, or any sin you wish to repent, on the piece of paper and “Nail It to the Cross”. (Do not sign your name on the paper.) After Good Friday services, all the papers will be removed from the cross, so that they can be used to start the Easter Fire for the Easter Vigil Mass.
Did you know you can be a 2020 CENSUS TAKER? The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire individuals who will have flexible hours, earn a weekly pay, paid training and receive $21.00-$23.50 per hour. You can apply online at 2020census.gov/jobs, or call 1-855-JOB-2020.
Every Tuesday from 10AM to Noon, the Health Ministries (staffed by an RN) at Pine Run Methodist Church (901 N. 6th Street), offers blood pressure screenings, help with interpreting medical bills and answering general health questions. This service is free. For more information, call 412-233-4006. On Saturday, February 29, Pine Run will have a Spaghetti Dinner and Bake Sale from 3-6PM. Cost will be $5, add $1 for meatballs.
The Second Collection next weekend will be for
the Repairs & Maintenance of our parish properties.
Call the Parish Office to reserve a date to have candles lit at the Tabernacle
and/or at the Statue of St. Clare.
We will have ADORATION every Friday after the 2PM Stations of the Cross until the 7PM Stations begin. Please take this opportunity to visit with the Lord. To ensure that there will always be someone present throughout the day, Sign-up Sheets with designated time periods are at the back of the church.

ST. ELIZABETH SCHOOL
As a part of our Catholic Schools Week celebration, the First Grade children wrote Thank You letters to various members of our school community. The children generated a list of those whom they wanted to thank and then each child wrote to a different school helper. Classroom teachers, fellow students, administration and school staff were among those thanked. Here’s a sample of just a few. Gianna wrote to the lunch ladies, “Thank you for all you do for us. You give us lunch every day. You help us open stuff when we need help. We appreciate all you do.” Deng wrote to our principal, “You make me feel better. Thank you for helping us pray. Rosary Prayer Group: Every Tuesday at 4 PM
A Recipe for Prayer… “Lectio Divina” or divine reading, is a way to pray
that invites the Word of God to transform us by
helping us connect more fully with God’s presence in
our everyday lives. It follows 4 basic steps:
1. Read a passage from the Bible.
2. Reflect on the passage by reading it again slowly,
ruminating on its content.
3. Contemplate the Word of God with an open heart
and allow the Word to inspire connections to your
everyday life.
4. Respond to God about what you have read,
learned, experienced, or questioned. Talk to God
about what you’ve heard with your heart, not
your ears.
For more information about this ancient form
of prayer, go to www.usccb.org
May you come to know the love of the Lord Jesus
more fully through your prayers.

TEEN PRAYER GROUP It is very encouraging to see our high school teens participating in their Prayer Group every Friday morning in the Coffee Shoppe from 6:55AM until 7:25AM.
Here they take stock of their faith as they discuss Scripture. With the gift of faith, received at Baptism, they are called to become responsible Christians. In a sense, assessing their time, talent and treasure is not an option. For these young persons of faith, it is part of the commitment to participate fully in the life of the Church.
We thank them and praise them for their ongoing witness of their faith in these prayer gatherings. THANK YOU Carole Good, for facilitating these grace mornings. THANK YOU young people for reflecting God’s love.
ADULT PRAYER GROUP This is a power house of prayer for individual need and those of our country, Church, our St. Thomas à Becket parishioners, our parish grouping and whatever intentions are given by people who call in for prayers. The Prayer Group meets every Wednesday at 1PM in Room 7 of the School Building on the lower level, across from the Coffee Shoppe. To join our group in prayer, simply stop in—we welcome you!
FISH FRY BEGINS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28 VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!!!
As we look forward to Lent, a season in which we try to do something extra, why not plan to volunteer some of your time to help at our Fish Fry.
Helpers will be needed in the kitchen area, in the serving area, in the dishwashing area, as cashiers and for clean-up.
If you are unable to physically volunteer; we are in need of donations of 16 oz. bottled water, 12 oz. canned soda and baked goods (especially cakes and pies). This is another great way to help out and would be greatly appreciated!
VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP SHEETS ARE LOCATED AT THE DOORS OF THE CHURCH
