Dear Parents, I would like to wish all of the Mothers of St. Finbar’s a very happy Mother’s Day this weekend. Being a mum is indeed a very special job, and this weekend is an acknowledgment of the work these important people do all year round. Taking time to spend with loved ones is a great way to strengthen the bond as a family unit and I would encourage all families to ‘disconnect’ from technology for the day and spend time with those that truly matter in our lives. Just a reminder that the Mother’s Day Breakfast is on tomorrow morning from 7:00am with a special guest appearance from our school choir at 8:30am. Special thanks to Mrs D’Rozario for coordinating the choir. The Mother’s Day stall is also on during the school day (Dads, please remember to provide your children with funds to purchase items). Gold coins are very useful for this event. This very busy day culminates in the Mother’s Day lunch which is organised by the Parents and Friend’s association. Thank you to the parents who have been observing the road rules around the school this week. Please know that the local council and Police have been informed of our current situation so don’t be surprised if we have a few ‘Council & Police Visitors’ over the coming weeks. I have done this as a duty of care to the community to ensure we provide a safe environment for our students and families when entering and exiting the school. Thank you to the Parents and Friends association which met last Tuesday evening in the Library. It is inspiring to be in a room of such dedicated people who are all working towards the betterment of our school. Not only in the area of fundraising, but also in supporting the social and emotional needs of everyone at St. Finbar’s. Our new school sports top is nearing finalisation with the School Staff, School Board, Parents and Friends and the School Students all consulted and opinions sought on the logo. Here is a picture of the new sample top as well as the 3 logos that are on offer. The multi-colour logo has been the crowd favourite so far. Special thanks to Daniela Marinelli and the uniform team for their hard work on this special project. NAPLAN testing begins next week for our Year 3 and 5 students. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday Language Conventions & Writing Wednesday Reading Thursday Numeracy Any students who are absent on any of the above mentioned days will be given the opportunity to sit the tests at an appropriate time on Friday. Mr. Rodrigues our Deputy Principal is our NAPLAN coordinator this year. Well done to the families who have completed the Parent Survey we have 103 respondents so far. The survey will close on Monday 9 th of May. Can I please ask any parents who have not completed the survey to do so in the next few days. Our Easter Season is nearly over and this weekend we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. In Luke’s gospel, this week, we hear Jesus talk to his disciples of their ‘witness’ to his suffering, death and resurrection. The gospel tells the story of the closing of one era and the opening up of another. Being ‘witness’ to his life and teachings, the disciples are asked to wait for the next stage … when they will be ‘clothed with the power from on high’… the gospel concludes by telling us that the disciples went back to Jerusalem ‘full of joy’ . this week maybe we can focus on the positives in our lives and live joyfully … trying to bring that joy into the lives of others … Congratulations to all the Year 4 students who participated in the Eucharist last weekend … Each mass was a truly joyous celebration! May these young people continue to be blessed with the gift of receiving Jesus regularly and take up the challenge to ‘love and serve the Lord’ through their actions. Although the students eloquently expressed thanks to all involved in their faith journey to date, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank their wonderful teachers Mrs. Jo Howell and Mr. Steele Anderson for their outstanding preparation of these students. Of course, none of this could happen without the support and encouragement of the parents ... so to all Year 4 parents – THANK YOU!!!

To all our mums … May your special day be filled with every happiness:

We pray that God would touch you

And fill your life afresh

With His grace and mercy

So you'll know that you are blessed

For you deserve some time out

To relax in God's love

And reflect on Him with thankfulness

For His blessings from above.

Update 9: Everyone Gets Mad. Helping children learn to manage anger Children’s angry behaviour is often difficult to deal with because it stirs up feelings of anger and annoyance in others. It can also frustrate parents and carers when anger is used to push them away. Everyone feels angry at times. Parents and carers can help children learn how to cope with anger in positive ways by teaching them to be aware of feelings, to find appropriate, safe ways to express them, and to identify and solve the problems or frustrations that lead to angry feelings. http://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/families/about-behaviour/anger/kids-and-anger-how-help ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NAPLAN That time of the year is fast approaching and our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the NAPLAN tests next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. These tests form one part of the assessment for these children and are conducted over just one week in the year. Whilst we can gain some valuable information from the results we know that these are not a complete picture of each child’s progress. As you all know each student’s wellbeing is of utmost importance to us at St Finbar’s and therefore these types of test should not cause undue stress or concern for our children. Obviously we want all our children to do their best and encourage each parent to support them in a positive way now and when the results are returned later this year. __________________________________________________________________________________

FRIENDSHIPS We all know how important friendships are to our children. Of course all friendships have their ups and downs. Children, especially in their first few years of school may make and break friendships on a daily basis. Whilst this can cause them to be upset or feel left out it is also quite a normal part of growing up.

Sometimes our children need our help as parents and teachers to manage their feelings and help them to work through friendship issues but it is also important for us to give them the skills to sort things out on their own. Check out this link for some ideas you might be able to use to help your child deal with friendship issues. http://www.wikihow.com/Solve-a-Fight-with-Your-Best-Friend

SRC Our school student reps will be visiting classes over the next few weeks to promote some ideas they have had to raise money for a chosen cause and also to promote student voice throughout the school. Getting feedback from our children is an important part of ensuring our students have a say in their education and a way for them to share their creative ideas. __________________________________________________________________________________ ONPSYCH PSYCHOLOGIST IS NOW AVAILABLE: OnPsych Psychologist is available for children who are presenting with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. National Quality Standard 5.1.2 states that "Every child is able to engage with Educators in meaningful, open interactions that support the acquisition of skills for life and learning". Throughout Term 1 Educators used routines such as walking children to school (from Before care) and walking children from school (to after care) to help develop trusting relationships and also model safe behaviours whilst drive through was in operation. This was especially important for Foundation children who took increased responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. We are happy to report that they have developed full autonomy and now independently walk to and from school.

Staff profiles

Quality Area 4 of the National Quality Standard focuses on the provision of qualified and experienced educators, co-ordinators and nominated supervisors who are able to develop warm, respectful relationships with children, create safe and predictable environments and encourage children’s active engagement in the learning program. Each week we'd like to take the time to introduce you to the staff that make this possible!

COMMUNITY NEWS

To St Finbar’s Community. I am organising a movie event for the Will Murray Foundation in support of Will’s recent accident at Half Moon Bay. Please come along and bring a friend and have a laugh at the same time to support this worthy cause. Will sustained a serious neck injury in January 2016, when he was playing with his mates at a local beach in Melbourne’s bayside suburb of Black Rock. Will’s accident is not covered by insurance, and there is an enormous gulf between the financial capacity of the family and the costs involved. The Will Murray Trust was established to support Will in his recovery and to relieve the significant financial pressure his family are under. You too can help. Through your donation, you’ll help Will to lead the best life he can – with access to physiotherapy, expert rehabilitation programs, specialised equipment, ongoing full-time care, and a home repurposed to suit the needs of someone with a spinal cord injury.

8 May 2016 The Ascension The Feast of the Ascension is really a kind of liminal moment in the Easter season. It is a time between times; a moment when we have left one place, but have not yet arrived at a second. While the narratives that describe the Ascension fit well into the unfolding story of redemption, the feast celebrates the exaltation of Jesus. The readings allow us to focus on this theological point while we commemorate a turning point in the life of the church. We do this by considering the enthronement of Christ in the heavens and the new body of Christ on earth. Many of the Easter accounts have directed our attention to the appearances of Jesus which were intended to strengthen the Christians' belief in his bodily resurrection. Today we stand awestruck, watching Jesus ascend into the clouds of heaven, there to be enthroned at the right hand of God. Today is a day to be overwhelmed by the reality of the divinity of the one whom we have known in his humanity. Christ who ascended into heaven in his body carries on what he began on earth through his new body, the community of believers. He teaches through its apostles and evangelists. He ministers through its prophets and pastors. We have not been left alone; we have his power, the same power with which he performed marvels when he walked the earth. We have not been left alone; we have each other. Together we make up the new body of Christ. © Dianne Bergant CSS
