Dear Parents, It has been very pleasing to see the number of students greeting me and other staff in the mornings and afternoons whilst on duty. Simple things like reminding everyone about manners and being courteous to each other has been an extremely positive experience for our community. We will be having an emergency management drill on Wednesday 9 th March at 10am. Please ensure you have spoken to your child/ren about the need for this type of preparation. The school staff will be receiving training on Tuesday 8 th March in preparation for this drill. Just a reminder that Thursday 10 th of March and Friday 11 th of March are school Closure Days for all students. The staff will be participating in Professional development opportunities on both of these days both on campus and in the city. The Season of Lent continues this weekend with the Gospel reading on the ‘Prodigal Son’ it is a timely reminder now for everyone to take stock of what they have given up or any extra services that have taken on. It is also a time for self-reflection and working on developing or improving relationships. The school athletics carnival is fast approaching and will be held at Sandringham Athletics track on Monday 21 st March. Students will be required to wear their sports uniform with their house coloured T-Shirt. The last day of Term 1 is Thursday 24 th of March and there is an early finish time of 2pm on this day. School will resume for Term 2 on Monday 11 th April. There has been a hive of activity during lunch time with our clubs. I had the good fortune to go to construction club this week and see the many machines being built over the past few weeks. The parable in this week’s gospel shows that there is always hope and a promise of forgiveness for those who repent and turn again to God and that God never tires of seeking the lost. The father allows his younger son to make his mistakes but welcomes him back. When the older son becomes alienated and lost, the father is consistent. He rewards both sons. Both the prodigal son and his elder brother sinned and stood in need of reconciliation. One wasted his father’s inheritance, the other resented the father’s celebration and mercy. Reconciliation bridges over these family disputes and broken relationships. During Lent we are called to be both reconciled to God and agents of reconciliation. We say ‘yes’ to the call to heal relationships, to deal with the disorders of existence (our own and others’), and to name and address the imbalances that are part of our experience. Next Tuesday evening the Year 3 students are saying ‘yes’ to the call to heal their relationships with others and God when they receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please keep them in your prayers…. This week the focus of Project Compassion is on Evangeline, a young woman living in a remote community in the Northern Territory. With the support of Caritas, Evangeline is learning traditional skills and gaining cultural knowledge through sharing art, storytelling, dance and song – practices that are central to traditional culture. Let us continue to pray for Evangeline and the work she does with the support of Caritas. The Year 4 students eagerly attend mass each week as they prepare to make their First Eucharist …. They will make their formal commitment this weekend … Please show your support for them by saying ‘hello’ when you see them at Mass this weekend.

Update 3 – Mental Health

‘Good mental health’ helps us form positive relationships with others, handle ups and downs, and generally enjoy life. With good mental health, children can feel confident and be more open to trying and learning new things. Mental health doesn’t mean being happy all the time. We all know what it’s like to be sad, angry, afraid, or upset, and everyone will experience a range of these feelings at different times. It’s a fact that children can be taught how to cope with their emotions, to bounce back from problems, and to develop positive relationships – this is called ‘social and emotional learning. It’s also a fact that a child’s family is the first and biggest influence on their mental health. Families can teach children these skills as early as possible in life – even from when they’re babies!’

SPORTS REPORT ~ Mrs Tania Thompson

Congratulations to our 33 Swim team members on their fine efforts at Oakleigh Recreation Pool last Thursday at our Dendy District Swimming Carnival. Luckily the weather was kind and kept the forecast showers away all day, allowing our 10 Dendy District schools to enjoy a day full of participating and cheering on all competitors. A special mention goes to

our four parent helpers; Breda D, Vanessa T, Karlie J-S and Lena S for their time and efforts given over the day - much appreciated!! We’d also like to thank our staff; Mr. Anderson & Miss Durie for their Team Managing efforts with our Swim team also. It was so pleasing to hear all the loud cheering for every one of our competitors throughout the day – even a few extra cheers (and laughs) for the team of ducks our swimmers had swimming alongside them!! Despite our best efforts as a team over the day, St Mary’s Malvern East ended up taking home both of the awarded shields; winning the Schools by % award and Outright Winning School shield – well done St Mary’s! We’d like to make special mention of the following seven students who have now made it through to the next level of competition; the Beachside Division carnival. These seven students will now travel to Oakleigh Recreation Pool with their families on Friday 11

th March. We wish them all the very best for that event.

CURRICULUM NEWS

Year 6 Camp

On February 15th the Year 6 leaders went to Campaspe Downs for 2 nights. It was such a great experience and we all challenged ourselves, but still had loads of fun, on the giant swing, flying fox, leap of faith, bushwalking and canoeing. Mr. Berlingeri enjoyed canoeing and splashing everyone, but at the end the children got their revenge. We had a talent show on the last night with plenty of comedy, dancing, singing and even the amazing teachers did some dancing for us. To end the night we had a disco and we even performed

our concert dances from last year. It was really great to see everyone challenging themselves and having a go. A special thank you to Miss Durie, Mrs. D’Rozario, Mr. Rodrigues, Mr. Berlingeri and Emma Hepples for making this a great experience for the Year 6 Leaders.

Camp, well where to start, camp was one of the best experiences of my life. It was an action packed adventure. I loved it. It was the most amazing camp yet, everyone gave the activities a go. It was all about challenging yourself and going outside of your comfort zone! By Chloe S ~ 6A

6 March 2016 Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
