Our teachers and students have certainly been very busy squeezing in everything planned into the shorter weeks. Whilst the rest of the term seems action packed we should return to more regular timetables from next week. Mr Berlingeri will also be returning from leave on Monday and I am very sure that, whilst he will have enjoyed his time away, he will also be very glad to be returning to all of us here at St Finbar’s. Student Safety Could I ask all parents, especially those picking up children from drive through on the Thomas Sherry Playground and Wallen Street, to be mindful of safe practices. Children at drive through should only proceed to cars when directed by teachers. Parents should remain in the que as cars exit and unless directed by a staff member should at no time overtake in the playground area. Thanking you for your cooperation in this matter. Walkathon What an amazing effort by our school community! We raised almost $6000 which will be used towards upgrading our asphalt areas on the playgrounds. Congratulations to Year 1A who managed to raise the highest class amount of $700.85. Special mention to Year 1L and 2D who also raised close to this amount. These activities are a very important part of our fund raising and we are extremely thankful to our very generous parents and wider school community. Once again special thanks to our Parents & Friends Committee and Year 6 Leaders for the organisation of this event. Sustainability For those of you who have seen the John Ash playground recently you will be aware of everything that is taking place above and below the ground. Ms McCurdy and the Sustainability Leaders are doing a fabulous job of maintaining and improving this special place. Last Friday classes were involved in planting a variety of crops which I know we will take great pleasure in watching grow until it’s time to harvest. Anzac Day Liturgy Our ANZAC day liturgy on Monday was made very special by Mr Millie (Dewi’s dad) who played the Last Post on his trumpet for us. All our SRC leaders contributed to the celebration but the sound of the trumpet really made the occasion memorable. A big thank you to him for giving up his time to be with us on Monday. I hope all families had an enjoyable day on Tuesday but were also able to reflect on the sad memories of war which we truly hope and pray our children will never have to experience. THANK YOU.

What a busy start to the term we have had …. Year 2 Prayer Night and Family Mass; Commitment

Masses for Year 4 students; ANZAC Day Liturgy … just to name a few …

Our gospel this week is from Luke and is probably my favourite post-

resurrection story. It is the Emmaus story and we used it as the gospel

for our opening school mass, on the first day of this term. Some

disciples, despondent at the death of Jesus, leave Jerusalem and head

off to Emmaus. On the journey, they are joined by a stranger who

helps them understand scripture and helps raise their spirits. Nearing

their destination, the disciples invite the ‘stranger’ to share a meal with

them. It is only when the ‘stranger’ says the blessing and ‘breaks the

bread’ do the disciples recognise Jesus.

Having just celebrated Easter, are we able to look at our world and find the ‘Jesus’ people – those who

are constantly and mainly quietly setting about helping those who are in need? How can we become

‘Jesus’ to others?

The Year 4 students are preparing for their First Eucharist. In

Italian, they are learning about The Vatican, and some prayers

in Italian …. Sincere thanks to our Italian teacher, Mrs Lena

Sirianni for this great initiative …. The display outside the

library looks fantastic … if you have time, check it out …

better still if you have a child in Year 4 ask them to tell you

all about it!!

Have a great week,

Through visiting people in their homes, we assist people not only with the necessities - such as food – but we also help with educational expenses, utilities, chemist bills, access to holiday homes, and referral to the support of other agencies. St Finbar’s Primary School are already wonderful supporters of this work. The Winter Appeal food drive provides essential food that we can distribute to people in need in our local community. And last year’s fantastic effort with Assist-a-Student provided essential help to 19 students in developing countries in the South-East Asia and Oceana region. Consider giving a hand in this rewarding work. Sunday, 7th May @ 5pm – Foundation Class Mass

Dear Families of St Finbar’s,

Over the past two weeks as I have been meeting with new families enrolling their children into school for next year I have really noticed how often the conversation turns to student wellbeing. Whether it is parents asking about our Bullying Policies or Social Skills Programs or simply just enquiring about how we cater for the emotional growth of our students, the fact is this is a very important consideration when choosing the best school for their children. The KidsMatter symbol I have included this week highlights the importance of nurturing happy, balanced kids. At St Finbar’s we strive to establish an environment which caters for diversity and respects difference. We know that not all children are the same and that opportunities need to be provided for this great mix of people. Providing a wide range of learning opportunities is part of our plan to give our students a balanced school experience.

Social Emotional & Values Focus. Over the next two weeks classes will be focussing on the very important concepts of Freedom and Responsible Decision Making. It would be great if parents could also talk about these values at home and how one person’s freedom should not impact negatively on another’s. Helping our children to learn the importance of making decisions which have a positive impact on ourselves as well as those around us is an essential part of enabling them to become responsible members of a global community. _____________________________________________________________________________ SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST IS NOW AVAILABLE: Stacey is available for children who are presenting with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. This service is completely covered by Medicare. To access this service please speak to your child’s teacher or you can email or speak to Mr Nigel Rodrigues ~ Deputy Principal who will provide you with details on how to refer your child. A special thanks to Jane from Bunnings Moorabbin who provided each year level with seeds and seedlings to plant. The Foundation-2’s were also lucky enough to have her stay and help them plant. Our garden in looking amazing! I am so proud of the hard work the students have put in. Fingers crossed the birds and critters leave our little seedlings alone and we have a lot of different vegetables to harvest and try.

Collaborative partnerships with families and communities 6.1.2Families have opportunities to be involved in the service and contribute to service decisions

Emma Collin, mother of Millie Collin, kindly offered her time to come in and chat to the children about her role at Parkinson's Australia. Emma discussed many aspects of Parkinson's, including what it is, the symptoms and treatments. As an opportunity for education and learning for active citizenship, and to involve OSHC in the broader community beyond the school age care setting (FW 4.3) the children decided that they would like to develop an "Act and Do" mindset so in support for people with Parkinson’s they will participate in collecting as many painted handprints on a canvas to help fundraise much needed assistance for research and development of better care.

As an integrated approach to painting hand prints on canvas, educators and children will also respectfully borrow Balarinji art motifs. As such, conversations will be inclusive of the indigenous culture, how art represents the Dreamtimeand that the stencilled symbol of a hand means belonging to a particular area. As an extension of learning the educators and children agreed to add more scientific models and information to the Curious Corner as children were captivated with the shape and look of the human brain during Emma's demonstration. When children participate in decision-making about indoor and outdoor spaces they experience a positive sense of self, sense of belonging and develop an interest in civic engagement.(FW p 32). The figurines/models will help children explore the purpose and function of a range body parts, as they manipulate resources to investigate, take apart, assemble, invent, and re-construct. Thank you Emma for considering the OSHC and to help the service embed empathy and facilitate the children in developing a sense of belonging to groups and communities and to understand the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active community participation (DEEWR, 2009, p. 26). These are the skills and behaviours required for active citizenship which pertains to lifelong learning.

We cordially invite all families to share aspects of their lives; We offer a variety of ways for families to be involved in and contribute to the service if they choose to. Should you be interested then please email Melissa.

Partnership s and pets

Thank you to the Camara family who kindly loaned their guinea pigs Mimi and Bob to the Holiday program. Having pets at the service gives children the opportunity to observe, interact and learn about animals. It can be a valuable part of a child's education and care experience, enriching their learning about nature, ecology and relationships. Educators considered the safety and wellbeing of children and the guinea pigs by conducting a risk/benefit analysis which highlights assessing and managing risks. As seen by the smiles on the children's faces, I believe we made the right decision!

School Principal Mr Patrick Berlingeri 9592 4479

Sunday 30th April The Easter mystagogical instruction continues. Today we reflect on life as a journey. This theme expresses well the fact that life is not static, but is a movement from one point to another. Actually, we do not so much make the journey as we join one that is already in progress. Nor are we alone on it. We have companions who share their encouragement and support, their talents and insight. Like the two disciples travelling to Emmaus, we have certain expectations which Jesus does not seem to fulfil. They did not realise that through his death he had accomplished everything. They did not realise that the Risen Lord himself was their travelling companion. As with them, so with us. We may not see the extraordinary in the ordinary. We may not see the hand of God in our lives. Perhaps we need someone to interpret for us both the tradition and the events of life. Despite appearances, something is happening beneath what we are able to observe. God is at work beneath and within our lives. Once we realise who this unique travelling companion really is, our hearts too will burn within us, our eyes too will be opened, and we too will look at life with the assurance of faith. Easter faith will transform our disillusionment into missionary zeal. Some of us may be called upon to give public witness, as did Peter. Most will preach with the example of our lives. All can enter this mystery as we recognise him in the breaking of the bread. © Dianne Bergant CSS
