ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
LOOKING AHEAD
LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
At a Catholic Biblical Association meeting, one scholar said, “At some point we are going to have to address the strangeness, the oddness of Jesus.” We have domesticated Jesus to such a point that sometimes his message, what it meant at the time, is lost to nice explanations and tidy clarifications. But truthfully, Jesus was someone who spoke in riddle-like speech we call parables. Perhaps he did not want his meaning to be grasped by larger audiences. Or perhaps that is merely a reflection of the markan community that preserved some of these parables. In any case, these enigmatic sayings that Mark preserved needed a solution. They needed to be explained or simply dropped from the story. There are examples of each of these two kinds of solutions in Matthew and Luke. Though it can be difficult, it might not be bad to recognize that Jesus was perceived as eccentric. Such an image can challenge our catechetical Jesus. Let’s allow him to speak with his own voice in Scriptures, without wrapping up all the loose ends. His words have power and meaning, especially to a believing audience. Once that power is unleashed it becomes life-giving. But if it remains domesticated it loses its potential efficacy. ~Living the Paschal Mystery 2018

Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows into a tremendous tree with large branches. So, too, in each of our lives, small things can have profound effects. God can use one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change another person's life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone's story, helping someone who is hurting, standing up for someone who is right, or complimenting someone on something they did. We all have God-given gifts and talents. Our task is to use them creatively, consistently, lovingly, and generously. We trust that God will take care of the rest.

♦ CHANGE IN DAILY MASS SCHEDULE IN JULY ♦
Because July is the quietest month in Parish life, with School out of session, no meetings scheduled, and many people on vacation, it is an opportunity for priests and musicians to have a little more time to relax. Therefore beginning Monday, July 2nd, and for the remainder of the Mondays and Fridays during July, there will be a Communion Service without music in Church at 8:15AM. As usual, Daily Mass will be celebrated on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during July in Church at 8:15AM. For those wishing to attend Mass on Mondays and Fridays, St. John the Evangelist in Greenfield has Mass at 8:00AM. St Matthias has Mass on Fridays at 8:00AM in the Parish Center Chapel.

MINISTRY REPORT ♦♦!
Thanks to your generosity, during the month of May we were able to serve 78 individuals/families (219 total members in those households), providing 479 bags of food, 7 M!Cards (bus passes), and $162 in vouchers for furniture, household items and clothing from the St.Vincent de Paul Store. We also provided $912 in assistance with utilities and rent during May, $156 in emergency assistance for travel, fuel and prescriptions, and purchased over $900 worth of food, as our pantry shelves have been virtually empty for several weeks. We re-ceived $3560 through your stewardship offerings, the cylinders at the exits, and direct contributions to the Society. We are grateful for the response to these first few weeks of our summer food drive. Our canned food had just about run out, and as our expenses this month show, we have been purchasing quite a lot of food to keep our pantry going. Thank you for all that you do to bring Jesus’ love and care to the poor in our neighborhood. May God bless you for your generosity!

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
You could buy a meal for a person who is hungry or for a person who just ate a feast. You could spend time with a lonely person or with someone who has more friends than you. You could step forward to join a parish committee that your experience and knowledge can help, or you can join a ministry where you will constantly struggle to figure out what to do. All of the above actions involve you giving and sharing yourself and your gifts. But not all of these actions will bear good fruit.
If a sower sows seeds only on rocky or weed-infested soil, nothing of great value will grow. But if that same sower plants his seeds in rich soil, then the harvest will one day be great. In all of the soils, the seed is being sown, but it is not the act of sowing that is the most important factor.
In living a stewardship way of life, we must discern how best to share our gifts. Discernment needs the Holy Spirit and a desire to follow God's will, not our own. Our own desires and misconceptions can cause us to use our gifts unwisely. The more mindful we are of how, when, and why we are sharing ourselves, than the greater the impact for God's glory. God wants all of you, but not in a way that is without understanding and discernment. He wants you to shine as a light to the world through your stewardship just as He came to you as the Light of the World in baptism. You can't shine brightly if the match does not hit the wick.
