ST. JAMES ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WEEKLY BULLETIN - April 23-24, 2016

Words from Our Pastor - Fr Ben

WITH CHRIST WE RISE ABOVE WEAKNESS

Those who keep the light of hope burning say, “there is light at the end of the tunnel, those who want to see light must pass through darkness.” We have gone more than half way as we celebrate the Holy season of Easter. Christians went to their knees on Ash Wednesday to mark the Holy season of Lent in prepa-ration for Easter. It was a moment of self-denial and renunciation. The forty days of prayer, fasting and alms giving were also moments of truth when one does an auto search with self-confrontation and reaches a hard decision of getting rid of vices in pref-erence to virtues by God’s grace. It was a moment of self-emptying and letting go of vices like; pride, self-ishness, gluttony, lust and the like. On the other hand it was time for in-filling, of grace, virtue and empower-ment.

For many this act of strengthening one’s relationship with God is too demanding especially when material-ism and comfort dictates to the body. For them, faith matters must always face procrastination. We need not forget that time that has been slotted for every-thing is not static. The gospel story of the ten (wise and foolish) virgins (Mt. 25:i-13) should be our guide to pilgrimage. Worse still the irony of the “Victory of the Cross and the Empty Tomb” is another puzzle for others. The truth is someone is getting strong from weakness of abasement before the creator is the cream of Christian life. A moment of grace, of revitali-zation, renewal, ascend and connectedness to the Heart of the Father. He empowers us to rise with Je-sus His son above all else. With Christ we enjoy the Resurrection and enter the glory of the new life with God the Father, friends, family and community.

Easter, not Christmas, is the greatest feast upon which our faith is built. It is the reason for our ability to believe in Gods power at work in us, which enables us to “conquer the world and subdue it” in the light of the gospel. It is when we say NO to sin and overcome evil with good, it is a moment to share success stories after achievements. And what are these success sto-ries at St. James? It is also a moment in which our flashbacks bring forth surprises and joys emanating from how far we have come! The good news of the Risen Christ can help us to give positive meaning to events in our parish. It helps us to understand that all things work for the good of all who trust in God, (Rom. 8:28)

GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME AND ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD.

Why Adore? 3

A sweet duty: « And it is our very sweet duty to honor and adore in the blessed Host which our eyes see, the Incarnate Word whom they cannot see, and who, without leaving heaven, is made present before us. (Profession of Faith, Paul VI, 1968). It is also a response to the First Command-ment : « You must worship the Lord your God. » (Mt 4, 10) Experience the tenderness of God: « The worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass is of inestimable value for the life of the Church. It is pleasant to spend time with him, to lie close to his breast like the Be-loved Disciple (cf. Jn 13:25) and to feel the infinite love present in his heart. » (Ecclesia de Eucharistia’, John-Paul II, 2003) Become an evangelist: « To evangelise the world there is need of apostles who will be « experts » in the célébration, adoration and con-templation of the Eucharist. » (Mission et Eucharistie’, John-Paul II, 2004 An eminent service for humanity: “Closeness to the Eucharis-tic Christ in silence and contemplation does not distance us from our contemporaries but, on the contrary, makes us open to human joy and distress, broadening our hearts on a global scale. Through adoration the Christian mysteriously contributes to the radical transformation of the world and to the sowing of the gospel. Anyone who prays to the Eucha-ristic Savior draws the whole world with him and raises it to God.” (Pope John Paul in his letter to the Bishop of Liege, Reported in L’Osserv. Ro-mano, 1996) Repair the great faults of the world: “The Church and the world have great need of Eucharistic adoration. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in adora-tion and contemplation full of faith. And let us be ready to make repara-tion for the great faults and crimes of the world. May our adoration never cease.” (Dominicae Cenae: Letter to Priests, Holy Thursday, 1980) » Prolong the Mass: « The act of adoration outside Mass prolongs and intensifies all that takes place during the liturgical celebration itself. In-deed, “only in adoration can a profound and genuine reception mature. And it is precisely this personal encounter with the Lord that then strengthens the social mission contained in the Eucharist, which seeks to break down not only the walls that separate the Lord and ourselves, but also and especially the walls that separate us from one another. » (Benedict XVI, Sacramentum Caritatis, 66, 2007). The best remedy against idolatry: Adoration “is the most valid and radical remedy against the idolatries of yesterday and today. Kneeling before the Eucharist is a profession of freedom: One who bows to Jesus cannot and must not prostrate himself before any earthly power, no mat-ter how strong. » (Benedict XVI, homily for Corpus Christi 2008)

If you are interested in learning more about Adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament visit www.mostholyeucharist.org. This is a great website for learning more about Eucharistic Adoration.

If you are interested in getting to know Jesus personally (different than just knowing about Jesus) through Adoration visit our Church on Monday evenings from 6-8:30pm with Benediction at 8:30pm. And, also on Friday from 8:30am to 7pm with Benediction at 7:00pm. It truly is the Pearl of Great Price.

ST. JAMES ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WEEKLY BULLETIN - April 23-24, 2016

Calling all parishioners….

BECOME A PART OF OUR NEWEST MINISTRY!

Our WELCOME TEAM members are staffing the Welcome Desk every weekend. The main focus of the ministry is to meet & greet parishioners and visitors before and after all weekend Masses. They will be available to answer questions and provide information about the parish.

This ministry is open to everyone. If you would like to be a part of the team, talk to one of the Team members after any Mass or call the parish office to sign up. You will be able to volunteer time before and/or after the Mass you usually attend each week-end. With enough volunteers, the time commitment would only be a couple of hours each month.

Year of Mercy

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Mathew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and as-sured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!" You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by for-giveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel com-passion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and for-given by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with re-newed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and re-store sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the interces-sion of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

How will I live this prayer this week? Who will I forgive?

How will I serve my neighbor? How will I live for others?

Do I carry the aroma of Christ with me?

Next Sunday, May 1st we will celebrate Our Blessed Mother’s Queenship by the church tradition of Crowning at the 11 a.m. Mass. All children are invit-ed to be the “Honor Guard” for the procession. Dress up, bring a flower for Mary’s bouquet and ar-rive at the church courtyard by 10:30 a.m. Don’t miss this beautiful tradition of honoring Our Blessed Mother.

Special Thoughts from the St. James Pro Life Ministry

The Miracle of Conception

Week 34 of 40 – Join us on the journey

When I practice my breathing I swallow fluid which gives me hiccups!

I’m practicing my blinking. My hair is growing. I respond to other familiar voices and sounds.

A new life starts when just one sperm cell from the father joins and fertilizes an egg cell from the mother. Just moments after concep-tion numerous hereditary characteristics are determined. These include the different features and individual trademarks such as gender, color of eyes, hair and skin; the shape of the face and body; and certain qualities of temperament and intelligence. A wonderful and unique little life has begun.

Join us the 1st Sunday of every month at 8:00am as we pray the rosary for the unborn in front of the Planned Parenthood at 5771 W. Eugie with the Knights of Columbus.

The Pro-Life Ministry would like to invite you to join us every 1st Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the church hall. Help us to defend those who cannot defend themselves!

Monday Afternoon Tea Ministry invites you to join us at 12:30 p.m. Learn to loom knit or crochet or teach us your

craft. Bring an appetizer to share.

DID YOU KNOW…..

Sacraments are the core of who we are as Catholic Christians. Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist are the Sacraments of Initiation. Reconciliation is a personal sacrament. The next sacrament to be celebrated is Mar-riage. The Church’s teachings on marriage are very specific. The diocese requires nine months of preparation in order to prepare for a life time commitment. The church does not recognize civil mar-riages and therefore Catholics married outside the Catholic Church may not receive Holy Eucharist.

If there are no impediments (prior marriages), the process is called Con-Validation. For further details on marriage preparation, please check out the brochures in the main foyer or contact Mary Ann in the parish office.

Congratulations to the students who received their Confirmation and First Communion this weekend:

Confirmation Only: Tyron Evans, Francisco Sebastian Mendoza, Maria Perez.

Confirmation and First Communion: Rosella Bolton, Amber Buchan, Lionel Reymundo Campas, Brian Collantes, Grace Dufresne, Devin Gabaldon, Nathan Gentz, Emily Kanter, Leanne Kosuda, Nicholas Larance, Matthew Lawrie, Opal Littler, Fernando Miranda, Isaiah Morris, Evan Morris, Rebecca Ortega, Callista Ortega, Robert Pulido, Samantha Sanchez, Yadira Santos, Edu-ardo Santos, Talia Simonetta, Ivan Stahl, Gabriela Vazquez, Myles Vazquez, and Zachary Vazquez.

May the Holy Spirit fill them with His peace and help them to continue to grow in faith.

The next 40-Hour Eucharistic Adoration begins 3 p.m. on Friday, June 3rd through Sunday June 5th with pro-cession from the hall at 7 a.m. to the church for Bene-diction. Signup poster will be posted in the foyer. Jesus cannot be left alone so please prayerfully consider spending an hour with him.
