THE TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Prayer and Liturgy

HEARING IMPAIRED? Amplification devices are

available for anyone having difficulty hearing the Mass. If you would like to use one, just see the Sound Minister in the sound booth at the back of the church before Mass.

DEAR PARISHIONERS:

October has traditionally been designated as Respect Life Month. Certainly there are rampant examples that demonstrate a failure on the part

of the world to recognize the dignity of each human person and the value that each has in the eyes of God. The Catholic Church has a consistent message that basically says that all human life from the moment of conception to natural death has a dignity and worth that no one can take away. The Church is well known for its defense of the unborn and that certainly is important in an age identified by Pope Francis as a throwaway culture ̶ a culture that allows us to simply discard the inert value of all human life, but the Church’s message includes each and every human life.

The late Joseph Cardinal Bernadine of Chicago was a strong advocate of this approach in what he described as the seamless fabric of life. In that he presented this consistent ethic of life that is the source of the Church’s message. In our culture, just look around and see the other ways in which life is not held as holy: capital punishment, just wages, sex trafficking, terrorist massacres, etc. While some of these issues might make for better newspaper headlines, the basic element underlying all of them is the belief that some life is expendable, and this is not consistent with the Church’s teachings on life.

Our Pro Life committee is sponsoring a Respect Life Fair on Sunday, October 20

th, from 8:30am - 1:00pm. Many

organizations in our area will have representatives here to present informational materials and opportunities for you to get involved in some aspect of the Pro Life movement. Take the time to come and see, and determine whether or not there is something you could be doing to help present this consistent message to others.

Pope Francis in his recent interview said we cannot always be moralizing, but we need to approach others in the spirit of the Year of Evangelization that Pope Benedict XVI initiated. Once we have attracted people to the message of love that is the root of the Gospel, the moral admonitions will be more easily adopted. Let us pray for all those who favor any of these issues that disregard the value of life and pray their hearts will be touched by the God who loves all human life.

God bless,

Father Tom

THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS: Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4; Psalm 95: 1-2, 6-7, 8-9; 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14; Luke 17:5-10

Today’s readings remind us that it is not enough to be a part of a believing community. For our faith to be alive we must share it through service. St. Francis de Sales notes: A living faith produces the fruit of good works in all seasons. When we are open to the truths of God’s word, we live according to God’s love and not nature. Thus, our faith in divine love raises us up to unite our spirit with God, and it brings us to love the image of God in our neighbor. An attentive servant must show unconquerable faith in our Savior especially in the midst of interior and exterior troubles. We must never lose courage in helping those who refuse God’s love, but pray and help them as far as their misfortune permits. Let us use all possible remedies to prevent the birth, growth and domination of evilness. In this let us imitate our Lord, who never ceases to exhort, promise, prohibit, command and inspire us in order to turn our will away from evilness, without depriving our will of its liberty. Yet, we must not look for surpassingly perfect love in this life. Our progress in holy love is like the mythical bird called the phoenix. When newly hatched from ashes, it has little, tender feathers, and can only leap rather than fly. As it grows strong it soars freely in the air but not enough to remain long on the wing and often comes down to earth to rest. When it is perfectly renewed in spirit and strength, it remains on the mountaintop. In heaven, we shall indeed have a heart and spirit entirely free from contradictions and conflicts. As yet we have neither the spirit nor strength of the blessed. It is enough for us to love with all our heart, which means simply to love with a good heart and without reservation. Courage then! Let us rouse our faith again, and give it life through using the gifts God gave us to perform good works with holy love, since this is in our power.

NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS: Next weekend

we celebrate The Twenty-Eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time. Please prepare for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these texts from God’s Word:

2 Kings 5:14-17 Naaman comes to Israel despite his double impurity: he is a leper and a Gentile. Because he obeys God by placing his confidence in the prophet Elisha, Naaman is doubly cured: his flesh is purified and his heart is converted to the true God.

Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4 The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. The psalmist sings in praise of the Lord who is king. All nature, indeed the whole world, is to acclaim the Lord.

2 Timothy 2:8-13 The second letter to Timothy portrays Paul, a prisoner in Rome, sending his spiritual testament: God is faithful to His promises.

Luke 17:11-19 The unmerited gift of faith is often given in the most unexpected places. The recognition of this fact gives rise to our thanksgiving.

When you call to add a name to our prayer list, please leave your name and number as a contact and let us know what the illness is. Before calling, please be sure you have spoken to the person or a member of the family about adding their name—we do not want to inadvertently disregard someone's desire for privacy.

Names of those who are sick or injured will be kept on the list for three weeks unless you specifically request a shorter period of time or call to ask that the name be removed. Boldface type is used for names that are new this week.

EXPOSITION AND ADORATION “In the Eucharist, the

Son of God comes to meet us and desires to become one with us; Eucharistic adoration is simply the natural consequence of the Eucharistic celebration, which is itself the Church’s supreme act of adoration. The act of adoration outside Mass prolongs and intensifies all that takes place during the

liturgical celebration itself. Indeed, only in adoration can a profound and genuine reception mature.” (Pope Emeritus

Benedict XVI)

Come adore Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Our monthly Exposition and Adoration is this Thursday, October 12

th

from 3:00 – 8:00pm in the de Sales Chapel. Sign-up sheets are available in the main hallway by the Welcome Desk.

BLESSING OF THE

ANIMALS IS THIS

WEEKEND! Don’t forget that all

pets are welcome this weekend at our annual Blessing of the Animals at 3:30pm, Sunday, October 6

th. We will

gather on the hill near the flag pole, where Fr. Don will lead us in prayer. Then, to celebrate the wonder of

God’s creation and the special relationships we have with our companions, he will bless each animal in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. Please be sure all pets are properly leashed, crated, or caged, as appropriate, to ensure we keep peace within the community. Parents should remind their children not to rush up to pet someone else’s animals. While all our pets are God’s critters, some are not used to being around young children when they are excited.

WE WELCOME those who have recently

entered into our faith through the waters of Baptism: Emilia Rose Boyer, daughter of Todd and Karen; and Elsa Diane Gieseking, daughter of Greg and Colleen.

THE TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Parish Information

FROM THE LITURGY COMMITTEE As the

Apostles in today’s Gospel asked Jesus to “Increase our Faith”, think about where your faith has been nurtured… in your families, from your youth? With friends who challenge your everyday life to be more Christ-like? In the Church with its liturgies and learning sessions? Say an extra prayer this week for those who are helping you and your friends to increase your faith every single day.

BEST WISHES to Caitlin Blandford and

John Rushin who were recently joined in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. May they grow together in Christ’s love.

FAMILY MASS As a result of the

enthusiasm and support shown at the initial Children’s Mass interest and planning meeting held on September 24

th, we are

pleased to tell you that we are going to implement this for our community on a trial basis, beginning in January. But first, let’s get used to a different name. We agreed to call this monthly Mass the “Family Mass” for several reasons. First, we want to stress that while this Mass will be celebrated in parallel with the 5:00pm Vigil Mass in the main sanctuary, it is not solely for the children. The intent is for families to attend and participate together - parents and children; not having parents in one Mass while the children are in another. Also, we want everyone to know that “family” means anyone in the St. John Neumann Community who would like to attend this liturgy. There were quite a few adults at the meeting who are not parents, and they are willing and eager to support this effort. Over the next several weeks, you will hear and read much about our plans and our needs. This weekend, after all Masses you are hearing from initial planners who are inviting you to consider ways you and your children can actively participate and contribute to the success of this Mass. Next weekend, Father Tom will provide more information and encouragement in his “From the Pastor” bulletin article. The weekend of October 19

th - 20

th

volunteers will staff sign-up tables after all Masses so that you and your children have an opportunity to sign up to be trained for various liturgical ministry roles. Your children will also receive additional information at their Religious Education classes; they will bring this home to you. If you would like more information now, please contact the Liturgy Office at 703-860-6151 or email Patty Bartnick at [email protected].

OKTOBERFEST IS ON FRIDAY! Tickets are still on sale for our 2013 Oktoberfest taking place this Friday, October 11

th, from 5:30

– 9:00pm in the parish auditorium. You may purchase tickets after all Masses this weekend

and in the Parish Office during the week. Remember some basics, please. We usually sell out very quickly. Because we do, you cannot call the office to reserve a block of tickets for “will call” as this could prevent someone who comes to purchase a ticket from doing so. If you want tickets, you need to buy them early. Also, please remember you are not able to reserve tables ahead of time. We advise arriving early, but you will not be admitted beyond the check-in table until the doors to the auditorium open at 5:30pm. For children (potty-trained and up) our annual Kids’ Zone will offer face painting, cookie decorating, movies and coloring. Last year, we had approximately 65 children with us, and we expect a repeat this year. We could use a few additional adult or high school teen volunteers, so if you are willing and able to help for a little while, contact Mary Klein at [email protected].

NEED A PANCAKE FIX???? We

have just what you need to relieve that ache! Come to the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast this Sunday morning, October 6

th.

Breakfast will be served in the auditorium from 8:30 to 11:30am. As usual, free-will donations will be accepted. The Knights are generously donating their proceeds to Specially Adapted Resource Clubs (SPARC), an organization supporting adults with life-long disabilities in a community-based setting.

ST. JOHN NEUMANN CHURCH RESTON, VIRGINIA OCTOBER 6, 2013

FROM THE OBLATES OF ST. FRANCIS DE

SALES The following invitation is for all parishioners:

Many generous people responded to our request to furnish the seminary in Washington, DC this past summer with

financial gifts, gift cards, furniture, and assistance. We are

most grateful for the outpouring of support. We were able to furnish our home and we are presently comfortable

creating our new community. The Oblates of St. Francis de Sales celebrate our Founder's Day on Saturday, October 12,

2013. We would like to invite you to see our new home as we are having an OPEN HOUSE on that day from 10:00 to

3:00 PM. Our address is 1409 Kearny Street, NE,

Washington, DC 20017.

Sincerely, Fr. Ed Ogden, OSFS Director of Formation, North American Provinces

HEALTH MINISTRY CORNER

Diabetes According to the American Diabetes Association, 25.8 million children and adults in the United States - 8.3% of the total population - have diabetes. Diabetes is the underlying cause of death for over 71,000 Americans each year. You can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes through a healthy lifestyle. Check out the October Health Ministry Bulletin Board to learn more about this important health risk. You owe it to yourself! From The Parish Nurse One of our safety conscious seniors suggested that I share information regarding the nationally recognized “Vial of Life” (VOL) Project. This charitable program’s mission is to donate free decals and health history kits for all seniors to keep in case of an emergency. But in reality, we should all have one! The VOL is a concise document that contains all of your medical health history, allergies, medications, physician info, etc. It is typically slipped into a zip lock bag with a Vial of Life decal on front and taped to the refrigerator. Many seniors tape a second decal on their front door to signal to EMTs to look for the VOL. You can also include critical papers such as an advanced directive or living will to ensure your wishes are respected if you cannot speak for yourself. More computer savvy folks can go to the VOL website and store information there as well, for ease in updating. As a former ER nurse, I can’t tell you how vital and helpful it is to have all current medical information documented in one place rather than relying on patients or families who are in crisis or sorting through bags of medicine bottles trying to piece together a picture. I encourage you to do your part to help avoid medical errors by keeping a vial of life in your home, your car, your wallet or your purse. It could save your life! To order go to www.vialoflife.com or for whose who do not use computers, contact the Parish Nurse at 703-391-2349 or stop by the parish office and leave your name and number. I am happy to help you fill it out!

RESPECT LIFE FAIR As noted in Father Tom’s

letter, October is Respect Life month. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us that while God created human life without assistance, he relies on us to defend and nurture it and to do so at every stage of human development and against a myriad of threats. To reinforce this message, the Pro Life Ministry is sponsoring a Respect Life Fair on October

20

th from 8:00am until 1:00pm in the

auditorium. We invite you all to visit the Fair to meet with representatives of local advocacy and service organizations supporting the poor, the disabled, the unborn, troubled youth, women with problem pregnancies, immigrants, and the imprisoned. Our hope is to help members of the parish community identify potential sources of assistance and dis-cover opportunities for giving or volunteering. We also ask that throughout October you pray for all the weak and vul-nerable, who, as Pope Francis has said, “are masterpieces of God’s creation...deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.”

MYST ICAL ROSE ROSARY

CEREMONY Do you know the miracle of the

mystical rose? You may have heard of our lady of Guadalupe, Saint Juan Diego, or even Tepeyac Hill, but do you know the rest of the story? Our Knights of Columbus conduct a beautifully moving and sanctifying mystical rose ceremony including music, a life size icon of our lady of Guadalupe, a rosary, and passages from the Nican Mopohua. If interested please contact Leo Duran at (703) 622-2068 or [email protected] to schedule today!

MOMS WITH CHILDREN IN COLLEGE Whether this is

your first or last child off to college, all mothers have hard to explain feelings as their children embark upon a new journey. This group will help us better understand how we can support our children in their college years by using our spirituality, support one another, and create care packages to send to our children. We will be using Stormie Omaritian’s “The Power of a Praying Parent” to guide us in the right direction. The group will meet in Room B5 on Thursday, October 10

th at 7:00pm. This is an opportunity to

talk with other moms and share experiences. Contact Kim Monroe at 703-437-1320 if you are interested.

“CALLED TO PROTECT” – At our High School Teen

Night tonight, Sunday, October 6th, we will present “Called to Protect.” This program combines a video presentation with follow-up discussion regarding safe environments for teens. The Bishop has mandated that this program be presented once a year to our high school teens as part of our commitment to providing a safe environment for our beloved teens. “Called to Protect for Youth” teaches high school teens about appropriate boundaries, how to respond if someone tries to violate those boundaries and how to tell their parents, or another reliable adult if they, or a friend, have been abused. It helps them to recognize their own personal boundaries and encourages appropriate communication. Parents may opt their teens out of this presentation by completing an opt-out form which will be provided on request. Parents are welcome to review this program prior to the presentation. For further information, please contact Doug Johnson, Coordinator of High School Teen Ministry.
