Lenten Day of Reflection

Saturday, March 25,2017

A vowed member of the Sisters of Mercy of

the Americas, She serves as chair of the

Religious Studies Department at Loyola

University—New Orleans. As an assistant professor of New Tes-

tament Studies, she focuses on humor forms and functions in the

Roman World and its relevance for recognizing and understand-

ing humor in the Gospels. Her recent publications include a

book, Humor in the Gospels: A Sourcebook for the Study of Hu-

mor in the New Testament (1863-2014). Dr. Bednarz is founder

Living Scripture: Finding God in Our Story

We will explore fascinating aspects of our primitive Christian

churches and see how these discoveries can inspire the St. John

the Baptist family as a new emerging church. Through the use of

Scripture texts and stories we will bring a first century Christian

church to life. We will discover what it means to find God in our

story and what it means to become “Living Scripture.”

Our Lenten Day of Reflection:

9:30-10:00 Registration, Coffee and Pastries

10:00-12:00 Finding God in Our Common Story:

We will examine how an ancient household became a

primitive Christian church—how it began, how it took care

of its members, and how it took care of the vulnerable in

society (e.g. Works of Mercy). We will delve into living

the Christian community today.

12:00-1:00 Lunch will be provided

1:00-3:00 Finding God in Our Personal Story:

We will engage in a story-telling process of finding

God in our past and in our still unfolding story. We

will examine how our encounters with God have

become “Living Scripture” and how these encounters

shape our vision of an emerging church.

Registration will be taken after mass on March 11, 12, 18, and

19. You may also call the Parish Office @ 806-771-2673 or email

@ [email protected] before Tuesday, March 21.
