The business card of Mother Teresa and her Sis-
ters reads: “The fruit of silence is prayer. The
fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love.
The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service
is peace.” “...Her own name did not appear anywhere in it--
just her business.” (Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Leo Maas-
burg, P 48-49) The call for each of us is simple and sincere,
quiet and calm. When we honor each othere we honor the
love of God. There are many ways to serve the poor in our
God’s Kingdom. Family Promise is one way.
The next training for Family Promise will be a potluck at
5:30 on July 6 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. If you are
interested please call Kathie at 781-5033 or Sharon Odden
during business hours at 866-0288. If you have donations or
would like to visit the Monsignor House please call Kathie at
781-5033.
“Because there is one bread, we who are many are one
body, for we all partake of the one bread.” 1 Corinthians
10:17.
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and
invite others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being
grateful and generous with our gifts, serves a twofold pur-
pose. One, it helps build God’s kingdom here on earth.
Two, it is a road map to Heaven. Let’s help each other get
there!
Musicians Rehearsals are suspended for the sum-
mer. You are still invited to join the music ministry,
30 minutes before Mass to go thru music. All voices
and most instruments are welcome to help lead the music.
Liturgical Bits and Bytes ~ Holding Hands at Mass: At
Mass in some parishes, people hold hands while they pray
the Lord’s Prayer and raise them while proclaiming “for the
kingdom.” The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is
silent on this point, so there is no official universal legisla-
tion on the custom. Decisions about this gesture are made
locally.
The origins of this custom are not clear. There is little evi-
dence for it prior to Vatican II. It may have developed during
the 1960s when we struggled to overcome racism and
strengthen unity.
The Lord’s Prayer seemed an appropriate time to join hands
because it is one of the few texts prayed aloud by everyone
at Mass in the first person plural. The eucharistic prayer is in
the first person plural, but the priest recites it alone. “Lord, I
am not worthy” is prayed by everyone, but in the first person
singular. The Lord’s Prayer, though, goes to God from “us”
-not “My Father, give me my daily bread and forgive me my
trespasses.” Jesus taught us to pray as a community, not as
individuals.

The priest extends his hands for the Lord’s Prayer (GIRM 152),
as he does for other prayers at Mass. At a concelebrated Mass, the
other priests do the same (237). But there is no instruction for the
people.
Not everyone joins hands for the Lord’s Prayer. Some people
make no gesture. Others fold their hands. The posture with the
most historical, liturgical and theological value is the one the
priest takes: standing up with hands extended. In the early church,
this was how all Christians prayed. To pray with hands aloft does
not join hands, but it does join hearts with generations of Chris-
tians past. Paul Turner Copyright © 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #170, San Jose, CA 95112, (408) 286-8505.
