Dear Families and Friends of St Joseph's, Historically, my days in mainstream education heralded a wind down mode for the last couple of weeks. Not at St Josephs!! If anything it seems to crank up a couple of gears as we pack in even more. Some of the highlights have been Feeling Good Week run by our Therapy department and PSHE team. We had a picnic on the lawn with giant board games, live music, a giant inflatable slide and a bouncy castle. The week finished with Sports and Fun Day including the famous fashion show. The end of Feeling Good Week brought the leavers Prom. I felt so privileged to greet them as they arrived at the venue dressed in their finest. Its wonderful to see how they have matured and developed in their confidence over the years. Last week our Key Stage 1-3 learners and their families attended for an end of year achievement evening with a certificate celebration. Families were able to meet up with their current class teacher and reflect on the progress of this year and meet their new class. Key Stage 3 learners who will be transitioning to Key Stage 4, listened to a talk by Fairley Allen, the Key Stage 4 leader, on how the curriculum changes towards formal accreditations. We also had Mud Week! Ill say no more, but I have a strong suspicion that wood smoked baked pizza may be a regular feature of our diet next year (see inside). This final week started with the grand presentation event at Sandown Racecourse. We dressed in our smartest clothes to congratulate our leavers with their families before returning to college where St Josephs was in full swing – literally, celebrating Mandela Day. Wednesday was my special Induction Mass to officially welcome me into the Executive Principal role. Marie Ryan, our Diocesan Catholic Education Director came to introduce the induction rite and I was presented with a Key by Liz James who was representing the governors, and also a bible and an icon of St Joseph by Lewis on behalf of the staff, learners and families. It was a lovely Mass and my husband Pete joined us, as well as my parents, which made it extra special for me. I felt quite emotional at the warmth and support shown to me by our wonderful St Josephs Community. This evening we celebrated the Key Stage 4-5 Certificate evening. Its a highlight of our calendar as families gather to celebrate the amazing achievements of the year for our oldest learners and to acknowledge the progress of our leavers and bid them a fond farewell. Tomorrow I will stand for the last time this term and academic year and wave goodbye to everyone as they set off for the Summer break. I thank you all for your amazing encouragement and support of me this term. I wish you all a safe and relaxing break. I look forward to welcoming our returning learners and staff, refreshed in September, and to our leavers I wish you every success, and that the light and friendship of St Josephs will continue to sustain you on your onward journey in life. Dear Families and Friends of St Joseph's, Historically, my days in mainstream education heralded a wind down mode for the last couple of weeks. Not at St Joseph’s!! If anything it seems to crank up a couple of gears as we pack in even more.

On Wednesday 6th July, St Christopher’s collected their picnic from Alison in the kitchen and boarded the minibus full of anticipation of a great day out at Bisham Abbey in Buckinghamshire. The visit began with a safety talk and we were all issued with appropriate clothing and of course a life vest. After a short training exercise to remind us of how to paddle, we carefully boarded our boats and started paddling along the River Thames. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day that saw all staff and learners discovering new and interesting facts about both the wildlife that lived along the river bank and the different types of boats that passed by. One particular delight was seeing 5 baby cygnets. A special invitation was extended to learners to take the wheel and “Captain Luke” was happy to rise to the challenge and steer us down the river, We all enjoyed the day, it was a huge success with only Emma somehow getting wet! Luckily the day was warm and sunny and it didn't take long to dry.

Once again Suzi, one of our staff from the Nurture Room, set off in July to undertake the gruelling 4 day Nijmegen March. The walk which is far from a stroll and involves walking between 30km to 55km across the beautiful Dutch landscape following various routes around the village of Nijmegen.

This year is the 100th Occasion of the Event and Suzi was bombarded with invitations to buy celebration t-shirts and special edition beers. However Suzi remained focused, resisted temptation and got busy setting up a donation page. Suzi is hoping to finally reach her fundraising goal so that St. Joseph’s can purchase a games picnic table for the orchard. Many of our learners love and use the space, summer or winter, regardless of the weather.

Please contact the school office if you would like to contribute.

FEELING GOOD WEEK

Feeling Good Week is a regular feature in our Summer Term calendar and is one that the learners and staff look forward to. The week is a balance of routine timetables and fun activities which are designed to encourage a feeling of fun and enjoyment. When the forecast was first consulted, the weather did not appear to be cooperating. However we did not allow our spirits to be dampened and our plans went ahead. In fact the week started well with glorious sunshine and we only introduced our wet weather programme for the Friday, when we felt we could not take any risks that it might rain on the runway for the fashion show.

On Wednesday the school band serenaded us as we ate our picnic on the front lawn. This year we had the new additions of an inflatable slide, giant garden Jenga and 4-in-a-row. The bouncy castle proved as popular as ever. To celebrate Eid, we had an Indian dancer visit us. Senjuti ran two workshops in the morning, taking us through some impressive moves, which culminated in an afternoon dance display. I thought we all looked very professional! The afternoon ended with a joint arts therapy workshop; which involved Louisa telling the story of the princess and the frog. The story was both told and signed twice; inviting learners the first time to listen/watch and the second time encouraging them to engage in acting out bits of the story that they liked. Linda was on hand with some musical instruments and Pip had some fabrics and puppets for learners to use. All learners were offered the opportunity to join the workshop and staff were free to get involved too. It was all about having fun.

Monday’s events included drop in sessions with the Therapy team and an extensive range of activities were on offer. Learners and staff from School and College were free to join in as much as they felt they wanted to. Sessions included Crafts, Yoga, Messy Play, Hair and Make Up, Face Painting, Games, Disney DVD and Hand Massage. There were also opportunities for Learners to access The Musical Orchard, and The Labyrinth.

There were some new models on the runway and of course some very familiar faces. We always encourage our learners to take part and it was lovely to see them dance and sing, since the fashion show was interspersed with talented entertainers. We haven’t been forced inside for a number of years now and so the indoor experience was actually a new experience for many of the learners. Despite the cramped changing conditions and shorter runway, they took it in their stride and the event was a great success, enjoyed by those who participated and especially by those who watched. The sun did manage to shine on us and it was great to see so many parents and friends. Thank you to everyone who supported us, so far we have raised £360.

MONDAY 4th - FRIDAY 8th JULY

The week ended with our Sports & Fun Day. Due to the forecast of rain we were forced to follow our wet weather plan. Although we managed to host the sports activities largely on the front field, we decided to hold the Fair in St Michael’s Courtyard, which would have offered some protection from the rain, which did not actually arrive. However, the stalls looked pretty under the eaves of St Michael’s courtyard and the afternoon’s entertainment was moved to the main school hall. In true St Joseph`s spirit the dance display and fashion show were received with great enthusiasm and fun.

MUD WEEK 11th - 15th JULY

Last week we hosted our very first Mud Week; learners and staff confirmed once again their extraordinary creative potential and enthusiasm to embrace new experiences . The purpose of the Mud week was to offer our learners and staff the opportunity to use our school grounds and the abundance of natural materials to facilitate further learning. Apart form the exploratory and experiential learner-led learning, we created a fabulous frogtopus Cob Oven and some Sculptured logs for the beginnings of a Sensory trail. The peak of the week was making and cooking delicious pizza in our Cob Oven! The pizzas were made or topped with love by our learners and tasted heavenly! I am sure friends, family and governors who joined us during the week will whole-hearted agree with this. We extend our gratitude to Mary Fawcett, our recently retired Principal, whose generous contribution made possible our Cob oven and Mud Week experience. So what happened during Mud week? There is a saying that a picture paints a thousand words. So here we go…

We got creative and expressed our ideas of faces with clay and natural objects. Alison, Kathy and Esther led this workshop in our nature walk area.

Nature detectives went to work with their Eco School bags and discovered many little friends living under logs and different parts of the wildlife and Nature walk areas, as well as the other outdoor areas of the school. We splashed and sploshed. We searched, investigated and asked lots of questions. We got excited with new findings, and best of all, enjoyed nature by

letting ourselves go!

Armed with tips from Jan, Class teams headed out with equipment for pond dipping and ended up discovering a whole new world. We were allowed to get very muddy… along with the staff.

When It came building the oven, we suggested the features of the oven and made changes as we went along. The eyes and nose looked like a frog, but after counting the legs, we agreed it wasn’t a frog. So we called it a frogtopus! Elehah, Rene’ and our kitchen staff provided the ingredients and we cooked our pizza in the Frogtopus!

The celebrations would have been incomplete without some gum boot dancing, Mud Music and face painting by Jan, Lloyd, Louisa and Shelaigh. What a fun week!

Congratulations to Thomas and Lewis Howard who won the Progress Cups for Key Stage 1/2/3 and Key Stage 4/5 respectively. They are rewarded for their outstanding achievements this year - Well Done!!

Progress Cups

At St. Joseph’s, a number of learners are elected to represent their class at the student council, the Ideal Ideas Council. The IIC meets fortnightly to discuss their experience of the school and to propose ideas that would improve the time that they spend in school, college or residential groups. IIC members are also invited to show special visitors around the school and to form part of the learner panel for Teacher interviews.

Ideal Ideas Council - Student Cup

Each year a cup is awarded to an outstanding member of the student council. We are looking for commitment, enthusiasm and someone who has shown themselves to be a great ambassador for our school. This year we are pleased to announce that the Cup has been awarded to Dominic. Dominic is very committed and full of great ideas. He is an active member at council meetings and always willing to assist with staff interviews.

Key Stage 1/2/3 Certificate Evening

On Tuesday 15th July, we were pleased to invite family and friends of all our learners in Key Stages 1/2/3 to meet the teachers and spend time discussing the progress that their children and young people have made over the course of the last year. Part of the evening was also deigned to inform families of learners who will make the significant move from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 in September. The highlight of the evening however was undoubtedly the presentation of the Work Folders and Certificates which were accompanied by a powerpoint prepared by the staff from each class. These showed the wonderful events and challenges that each learner has faced and overcome during the year. It was lovely to see that the learners enjoyed the powerpoints just as much as the families and staff. The final award of the night was the Progress Cup for Key Stage 1/2/3 which went to Thomas. It was lovely to see some of families and residential staff join us for the evening and of course Alison and her team were on hand at the end with a wonderful buffet of nibbles, cakes, fruit and refreshments.

RESIDENTIAL CARE - END OF YEAR PARTY

The Summer had well and truly arrived by Tuesday evening; perhaps it knew that it was more than welcome to join the End of Year Party; organised in John Bosco Garden by all the staff and learners who live some or part of their year at St. Joseph’s. The hot day had turned into a scorching night but that didn’t stop the Care Team from throwing a great party; the theme was the Olympics and there were dishes from almost every country that had taken part in the last Olympics, at the final count there were over 70 dishes. There were kangaroo burgers from Australia, green tea and salt milk from Mongolia, roasted pineapple from Cuba and roast beef in a Yorkshire pudding from the UK to name but a few.

There was also a fantastic barbeque and music, dancing and games. The evening was topped off with a water and cream fight; hope-fully the cream challenge came first and the water was one of the many care staff enthusiastic and creative approaches to cleaning everyone up before returning to their respective groups!

MASS CELEBRATIONS

It is not often at St Joseph’s that we have the pleasure of celebrating 2 Masses in 7 Days. However, this is how we found ourselves this week when we hosted both the Leavers’ Mass and a Mass for the official Induction of our new Executive Principal. Last Thursday afternoon Father David from Jesus Christ, Redeemer of Mankind, the parish church in Cranleigh joined us for our traditional Leavers’ Mass. This celebration is a bitter sweet experience since during the course of the Mass we thank God for the journey that we have shared together and enjoyed across a number of years with those from our St Joseph’s community who are leaving. The powerpoint during the homily showed photos of all our learners who are leaving this year and it was wonderful to see the progress and development they have made; some of the photos were from over 10 years ago. Our learners and staff received gifts to help them remember their time at St. Joseph’s; the prospect of their imminent departure left everyone just a little sad; both those that are starting the next amazing part of their journey and those of us who will miss seeing them around school. Of course, we are at the same time joyful that our leavers are now in a great place to embrace their grown up futures - equipped with many of the skills and energy to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead. After Mass the leavers, class staff and guests went to the Chapel where Alison and her team had prepared a delicious afternoon tea.

Leavers’ Mass

Induction Mass for our new Executive Principal

Wednesday 20th July saw us hosting a new visitor Father Chris, Annie’s Parish Priest from St Michael’s in Worthing. It would appear that although this is his first visit to us as a priest, he had previously come to St Joseph’s whilst he was a seminarian at Wonersh, just as Bishop Richard did. Father Chris was joined by Marie Ryan, Director of Education for the Diocese of Arundel & Brighton. Together with families, Governors and staff, Marie acknowledged and encouraged Annie to complete her service to St Joseph’s to the best of her ability.

Annie in her turn was thankful of the blessings which she received and was noticeably moved by the tremendous honour and privilege that comes with being our new Executive Principal. During the Ceremony Annie received a huge key to symbolise her responsibility as the head of our household. Annie also received a beautiful edition of the Bible, so that she is always reminded of the path to lead us through and finally a gift of an icon of St Joseph who, as Jesus’ earthly father, was his first teacher. Fittingly, Annie’s own parents and husband were delighted to join Annie’s St Joseph’s family in witnessing this joyful celebration and to congratulate Annie as she starts this new adventure.

LEAVERS’ EVENTS

PROM PARTY

After a short journey, we arrived at the prom where Annie met us with Joey Bear. Of course that meant another photo shoot on the red carpet. Following this, official individual photos were taken as we entered the hall and met many other college leavers. Nothing was actually happening so St Joseph’s took to the dance floor and got the party started. We certainly showed some good moves. Obviously, with all this dancing, drinks and a rest were in order too. But many were back on their feet as soon as the buffet was finished. This was just the start of all the celebrations for the leavers!

The spread consisted of red onion focaccia slices, cheese straws, marmite and cheese swirls, mini quiche, savoury egg muffins, tomato, mozzarella and basil towers, celery and cream cheese and of course pineapple and cheese on sticks. They also made gluten free apricot flapjacks and lemon biscuits. Everything looked delicious and they were very proud to share the spread with their visitors.

Following their Pre Prom Party there was a photoshoot outside the college entrance. Don’t they all look smart!

SANDOWN PRESENTATIONS

On Monday, the Leavers Class met St. Joseph’s staff at Sandown Racecourse, along with their parents. The view from the presentation room was spectacular, particularly as the weather was so glorious. Each learner walked to the front on their own to collect their certificate and have their photograph taken. Staff and parents were very proud to hear about all their achievements including gaining their ASDAN qualifica-tions. It was a lovely occasion and showed how far this group of young people have come and how much independence they have gained.

This year the leavers invited staff to their “Pre Prom Party” held in St Francis’ so that more could join in with the fun. They were exceptionally busy as they decided to use their baking skills and do all the catering.

KEY STAGE 4/5 PRESENTATION EVENING

On Thursday 21st July; families, friends and guests were invited to join our learners and staff for the Annual Presentation of Awards to Key Stage 4/5.

The evening began with a delicious buffet in the School Dining room and everyone was free to walk through St Nicolas’ classroom to congregate in the Courtyard. Chairs and musical entertainment by Lloyd were available to enjoy in the late evening sunshine and Teachers and Therapists for learners from Key Stage 4/5 were on hand to discuss their progress and achievements.

At 7.15pm, everyone then proceeded to the main School Hall for the wonderful presentation of Awards. Amongst the certificates that were awarded were

a) ASDAN Certificates b) WJEC Certificates c) Royal Horticultural Society Awards d) Duke of Edinburgh Awards (awarded by Robert Squirrel of

Sayers Croft) e) Sports Awards f) Fashion Show Certificates g) Ideal Ideas Council Certificates h) Progress Awards and i) Records of Achievement for our 10 young adults who are

leaving this year.

It was wonderful to see everyone make the evening such an amazing success and such a rewarding experience for our learners and their friends and families. Annie was very clear that this sort of evening of the recognition and the acknowledgment of the achievements and progress of our learners is a whole team effort. Everyone who works at St Joseph’s is an integral part of the journey for our learners and Annie extended her gratitude to staff for the continued dedication and the love that they bring to this very special place. T here were many families who had asked Annie during the evening to thank everyone for the care and education given to their young person.

Physical exercise and autism There is increasing evidence to suggest that children with autism may particularly benefit from regular physical exercise within their day. This can help children to develop skills to complete functional tasks as well as providing children with health benefits, meaningful leisure opportunities and developing skills in social interaction. Some exercises which may be particularly helpful include: Activities such as bouncing on a trampoline or a large ball, skipping or pushing heavy objects can help children with proprioceptive difficulties. The proprioceptive system helps children and adults to locate their bodies in space. Exercises such as swimming, mazes, obstacle courses, constructional toys and building blocks can de-velop children’s ability to learn a sequence of movements. Crawling, hopscotch, skipping, playing musical instruments, playing catch and bouncing balls with both hands are some of the many activities that can help with bilateral co-ordination so that children can use both sides of their bodies at the same time. Activities such as hitting a ball, popping bubbles, throwing and catching balls, beanbags and balloons will develop hand-eye co-ordination. For more information, please visit
