A Message from Father Jim . . .
Feast of the Ascension
Today we celebrate the great feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.
This feast we celebrate does not mean the end of Jesus' presence in the world.
On the contrary, the feast of the Ascension celebrates a change in the way Jesus
is present in the world. It celebrates the fact that Jesus is no longer present in the
world through His human body in a physical way but is now present in the world
through His mystical body in a spiritual way. Jesus is present through His
Church: "Where two or three are gathered together in my name," Jesus said,
"there am I in the midst of them." And so the feast of the Ascension does not
mark the end of Jesus' presence in the world. It simply marks the change in the
way Jesus is present throughout the world. Jesus is now present through us, His
followers.
With this in mind we should be moved to an even more important point concerning
the Ascension. The Ascension marks not only a change in Jesus' presence in the
world; it also marks a change in Jesus' activity in the world. Jesus no longer acts
through the members of His physical body, but through the members of His
mystical body. To put it another way, Jesus no longer acts by using His own
human voice to address people, His own human heart to love people and human
hands to reach out to people. Rather, He acts through us - you and me. He uses our
voice to address people, our heart to love people, and our hands to reach out to people. This
is what we celebrate on the Ascension.
On this day over 2000 years ago, Jesus passed on to us, His followers, the
responsibility to let Him be present in our modern world. On this day over 2000
years ago, Jesus passed on to us, His followers, the responsibility to let Him
continue to speak, love and reach out to people in our modern world. On this
day over 2000 years ago Jesus passed on to us, His followers, the responsibility
to let Him continue to work in our modern world. This is the mystery that we
celebrate today and this is the challenge that the Scriptures hold out to us today.
God bless you always!

music will be provided by a tri-parish choir.

St. Mary’s rectory.
All members of our parishes are then invited to honor Fr. Jim at a reception from

Where will you go when it is time for
retirement? Maybe you are already in
your golden years and enjoying some well
-deserved relaxation. Did you plan well?
Finances can be a little tighter than antici-
pated, and maybe that house that held up
all those years now needs a little work.
Life is never exactly the way we planned
it or envisioned it. Life always has the
tendency to take us by surprise.
In terms of what comes next after this
earthly life, we know there is a place pre-
pared for those who love the Lord and
heed his words. We do not know what it
looks like or exactly which people we
will see there, but we know it is better
than anything we have experienced previ-
ously in life. This place, not defined by
human perceptions of space and time, is
eternal and perfect, and it is where Jesus
sits at the right hand of God.
The Ascension of the Lord provides for
us a hope that, after whatever trials of this
life we experience, there is rest in the
Savior's arms. The Incarnation, God made
flesh, rose from the dead and now is with
the Father so that we could rise from the
dead and live eternally with the Father.
This is good news!

"So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven ... But
they went forth and preached everywhere." What a roller coaster of emotions the
disciples must have experienced. First, they had come to know Jesus and had
changed their lives to follow him. Then they had watched him die a tragic death
on the cross. Following that, they were astonished to experience the glory of his
resurrection, and then they enjoyed his company for a while longer. But now,
they had to bid farewell again. Now they watched as Jesus ascended into heaven,
leaving them with their instructions: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the
gospel to every creature."
It's inspiring to see how the disciples handled all of this. Even though they must
have been struggling with a kind of sadness or disappointment when Jesus left
them, they didn't dwell on that. They went out and did what they had been called
to do. They "preached everywhere" and shared with others the good news.
Focusing on the joy they had come to know through their relationship with Jesus,
they were able to share that joy with the people around them.
Like the first disciples, we are also called to share the gospel with others.
Certainly through our lived example we should reveal to others the joy that Jesus
brings. Even though he is not physically walking amongst us, the lives of
Christian believers reveal an ongoing relationship with him. There may be times
and situations, however, that require more of us than just being witnesses.
Sometimes God calls us to share more directly and more courageously the
message of faith. May we follow the example of the disciples, who readily
embraced this call. © Liturgical Publications Inc

Have you seen them? Flocks of pink flamingos are here and gracing front lawns in your neighborhoods. These birds are highly territorial and should only be removed by our specially trained youth! If you are
‘blessed’ to have a flock take up residence at your place, please call the number on the bottom of the ‘Ransom Note’ for a timely removal. The
youth will be sure to send them scattering to a new destination!
This day, World Communications
Day, is the only proclaimed "world
day" of Vatican Council II. This
should then show us the importance
of this day in the life of the church in
the world. It is no surprise that Pope
Francis would choose the topic of
"Communicating the family: a
privileged place of encounter with the
gift of love" as the theme this year.
Last October we saw the Synod of
Bishops meet for a week on the topic
of family. In response to that synod,
there is a widely cast net as the
church asks for our input on many
topics that effect the family.
The family, whether it is a single man
or woman living alone, a married
couple with or without children, a
community of religious men or
women living in community, or the
family of nations, is the place where
God speaks to the people. Love is
present wherever people first think of
another person, before thinking of
themselves.
Sacrificial love, that action of
wanting and working for another
person, is perfectly embodied in the
sacrificial love of Christ on the cross,
or of parents working for the
betterment of their family, instead of
themselves. It is indeed an "encounter
with the gift of love." May we all,
this year, mark this World
Communications Day as a day to
pray for and work for someone other
than ourselves.

Q
What do I tell my child about heaven and hell?
A When families are close, especially when gathered together for a
meal or special occasion, children feel the love, acceptance and
closeness. They want to feel it over and over, and gatherings are
something that they look forward to with excitement and joy. It is a
great metaphor for heaven, where people experience the love and closeness of
God all the time, a feeling that we want to have and look forward to with
excitement and joy. Conversely, when we are alienated from each other and
feeling lonely and very much unloved, we experience a little bit of what hell is
like. Apart from God’s love, we feel very empty and abandoned. It is not a good
feeling and we try to avoid it. Reconciling with each other, going to confession,
and doing nice things for others helps restore the love and closeness we desire.
Heaven and hell are best described in the context of relationship. The closer we
are to God, the more we experience his love and peace. The further we are from
God, the more we experience isolation and loss. Those are feelings on which
children can put a face as well as build a life. © Liturgical Publications Inc.
A Prayer for those in Armed Forces Heavenly Father, be with our men and women as they serve our country.
When they are faced with danger, give them the courage of Michael the Archangel, who was victorious over evil.
When our soldiers are faced with difficult choices, give them the discernment of St Martin of Tours, the soldier who remembered to aid the meek and helpless.
When our soldiers are injured or forced to the sidelines, give them the guidance you gave to St. Ignatius of Loyola, who turned a time of pain and recovery from a war wound into a new life of trust in you.
Amen.
