Prayer for Priestly Vocations Good and gracious God, you have called us through our Baptism to discipleship with your Son Jesus Christ, and have sent us to bring the Good News of salvation to all people. We pray for you to grant us more priests, deacons, religious brothers and sisters and lay ministers to build up your Church here within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Inspire young men and women by the example of Saint Junipero Serra to give them-selves totally to the work of Christ and His Church. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen!

I pray and hope you are enjoying the warm summer months and have been able to take in some rest and relaxation. No matter if you planning a trip, spending some time with family, catching up on some fun reading, go-ing to see nature, or just taking a nap, it is so worth it to feel refreshed and renewed. Summer months here at the parish mean that we are already gearing up for the Lomita Fair. Our fair committee is already meeting, raffle tickets have been sent to your homes, the king and queen candidates are fundrais-ing, and we are spreading the word all over the community about what we hope to see at the fair this year. I have heard that the dunk tank will be return, so save your money and dunk people like your parish priests! Thanks in advance for all your help with the preparations of the upcoming fair. These days have also been rich as a parish community as we send two people from our parish staff to their new journeys away from Lomita: Teresa Carbajal who has lead the Spanish Religious Education / Hispanic ministries for the last 24 years, decided to retire and enjoy some time with her mother, family and friends in Mexico. Teresa, you have truly ac-companied our young people and their fam-ilies to an encounter of Jesus Christ through your catechesis, retreats, and religious/ cul-tural activities. Deacon Rick and Maureen Soria, have de-cided to relocate to Northern California to be closer to family and an opportunity for ministry. Rick and Maureen have done so much to welcome and accompany adults and children into their faith journey such as the RCIA, the homeless ministry, adult confir-mation class and RCIC just to name a few. We will indeed miss their creativity, energy

and enthusiasm. We will certainly hold them in our prayers as they transition and begin a new journey with the people of Grass Valley. Yesterday, 11 young men were ordained to the transitional diaconate by Archbishop Jo-se Gomez. Egren Gomez, Danilo (Danny) Guinto, Gilbert Arthur Guzmán, William Ian-Vincent Hagan, Paul Kenya, Spencer Meyer Lewerenz, John Terence O'Brien, Tommy Roide, Pedro Saucedo Jr., Joachim Ssebwa-na, and William Matthew Wheeler, are on the road to priesthood so a year from now in June 2018 they will be ordained to priest-hood. As you remember, Danny was an in-tern here with us from 2015-2016. I invite you to pray for these young men as they continue to respond to the call of the Lord and that he may grant them holy perse-verance as they serve God's people. Blessings! Fr. Marinello

Jesús invita a

Faith Sharing Meeting August 24th - 7-9pm—Conference Rm D

In the Gospel of Matthew God chose Peter to be the ”rock” of His church. We might wonder how the other disciples felt when they weren’t chosen for the job. In our turbulent world to-day, each of us has a complicated set of wants and needs, and a desire to be includ-ed, to be needed, to be loved. But God has a plan for each of us that surpasses all of our desires. What is God’s plan for you? We’ll reflect upon the readings for the Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time:

Isaiah 22:19-23 Romans 11:33-36 Matthew 16:13-20

Please let us know if to plan to attend. We hope to see you there! Roy and Carole Hardinge 310.539.6027 or [email protected]

PRO-LIFE “In this context the temptation grows to have recourse to euthanasia, that is, to take control of death and bring it before its time, 'gently' ending one’s own life or the life of others. In reality, what might seem logical and humane, when looked at more closely is seen to be senseless and inhumane. Here we are faced with one of the more alarming symptoms of the 'culture of death'.” –Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life) SMM Parish prays to end death by human hands: abor-tion, euthanasia, and capital punishment.

A Note from Deacon Rick

A TIME TO SAY GOOD-BYE My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really

know myself, and the fact that I think I am follow-ing your will does not mean that I am actually do-ing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. These few lines are from a reflection by Thomas Merton that reflects my journey. I share this news with you with both great joy and sadness. The joy is in a new beginning and the sadness is in leaving you. Maureen’s and my plans were, when we retired 3-5 years from now, to move up to be near our grandchildren in Northern California. But in the last two months it became apparent that Our Lord had different plans. I have been offered a position at St. Patrick’s Parish in Grass Valley, and after a great deal of discernment, Maureen and I felt that accepting the offer would be best for our family. Although I will be commuting back and forth for the next few month, the last Sunday that I will be able to be with you will be August 20th. God bless each and every one of you for how you have touched our lives, and hopefully in some small way we have touched yours.

-Deacon Rick

The parish will hold a farewell reception for Deacon Rick and Maureen Soria on Sunday, August 20th, after all of the morning masses.

Our former Seminarian in-tern, Danny Guinto and ten other men was ordained a transitional deacon.

Please pray for Danny and his classmates as they con-tinue their journey towards

priesthood in June 2018 and pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Tuesday, August 15th, is the Feast of the As-sumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy

Day of Obligation for all Catholics. Mass times will be at:

6:30am, 8:15am, and 7:00pm (bi-lingual)
