29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
A young-at-heart couple was celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. The family had thought long and hard about a gift for such wonderful people, finally deciding to give them a large photo of the entire family and an album of letters of love and good wishes that honored their commitment and love. Nothing could have been more significant or valuable. The couple read the notes and explained each person in the photo to anyone who would listen!
When St. Paul writes to the Thessalonians, he describes how the church acts in power and out of conviction because of the working of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul says how he and the others were mindful of the way the Thessalonians were proving their faith, laboring in love, and showing constancy in hope. Grace took root because the people did not hold back; they kept the covenant with God.
It is not just a church community that practices faith and bears witness to God’s Spirit. Each person does too. The couple married 65 years, the volunteers at the soup kitchen, the CCD teacher, the people who practice kindness and virtue all testify to the power of God in their lives. They give back to God what He has given them. And all of us are better and richer and holier for it.
- James Gaffney

The Pastor’s Column
As a pastor, it is always a joy to be able
to give recognition to folks who have
been making use of their time and
talents in service to other people,
whether this be to those in their own parish or
community or beyond.
With our Religious Education Program up-and-
running for another year, I know you join with me in
expressing gratitude for the better than 60
catechists, coordinators and aides who have
committed themselves to assisting with the religious
instruction of the children in our parish. Their
dedication will bear fruit for generations to come!
God bless them all!! (By the way, we remain in need
of a few more catechists. So, please give
consideration to joining this special corps of
volunteers.)
If you have ventured into the downstairs church in
recent weeks, you will have noticed that an area was
cleared at the back end of the church. This has made
for a small but adequate gathering space for
receptions, meetings, and the like. This effort was
made possible through the creative work of John
Reale, Louie Reale, Joe Silva, Jack O’Keeffe and
Steve Kiley. We also thankful for the chairs donated
by Kevin Sullivan for the gathering space. Thanks a
lot, guys, for a job well done!
And, lastly, we were thrilled to hear that Muriel
Ostrowski is scheduled this week to receive the Pro-
Life Community Award to be presented by the
Mass. Citizens for Life. Muriel has been a valued
volunteer at the Heartbeat Pregnancy Health
Center, which has been located on our parish
property for more than 20 years. Congratulations,
Muriel, for your dedication and commitment to the
sanctity of human life!
Those mentioned above are an inspiration to us all.
In addition, I hope their actions serve as an
encouragement for each and every one of us as we
look for ways to be good stewards of the varied gifts
— especially of time and talent — that God has
given to us in service to one another.
God bless!
Father Frank Silva
