Blessing of Palms

ANTIPHON. Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is HeWho comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the

heaven above!

LET US PRAY: Bless these branches, Lord we pray Thee, andgrant that what Thy people this day bodily perform in

homage to Thee, they may spiritually perfect with the greatestdevotion, by gaining a victory over the foe, and ardently lov-ing every work of mercy: Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Distribution of Palms

GOSPEL. Matt. 21, 1-9. At that time, when Jesus was nearJerusalem, and had reached Bethphage, which is close to

Mount Olivet, He sent two of His disciples on an errand; Gointo the village that faces you, He told them, and the firstthing you will find there will be a she-ass, tethered, and a foalat her side; untie them and bring them to Me. And if anyonespeaks to you about it, tell him, The Lord has need of them, and he will let you have them without more ado. All this wasso ordained, to fulfill the word spoken by the prophet: Tellthe daughter of Sion, behold, thy king is coming to thee, hum-bly, riding on an ass, on a colt whose mother has borne theyoke. The disciples went and did as Jesus told them; theybrought the she-ass and its colt, and saddled them with theirgarments, and bade Jesus mount. Most of the multitudespread their garments along the way, while others strewedthe way with branches cut down from the trees. And the mul-titudes that went before Him and that followed after Himcried aloud, Hosanna for the son of David, blessed is He Whocomes in the name of the Lord.

Procession

PRAYER: Lord Jesus Christ, our King and redeemer, wehave carried these branches and sung solemn praises in

Thy honor. Graciously let thy grace and blessing rest wherev-er these branches are brought; with the power of Thy righthand defeat every evil influence and deception of the devilwhile granting Thy protection to those whom Thou hast re-deemed: who art living and reigning with God the Father inthe unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, For ever and ever.

Mass

INTROIT. Ps. 21, 20, 22. O Lord, remove not Thy help afarfrom me; look to my defense: deliver me from the lion’s

mouth, and my lowness from the horns of the unicorns. Ps.21, 2. O God, my God, look upon me; why hast Thou forsakenme? Far from my salvation, are the words of my sins. O Lord.

-CONTINUED ON BACK

PRAYER. Almighty and everlasting God, Who didst willthat our Savior should take upon Himself our flesh, and

suffer on the Cross, that all mankind might have His exampleof humility for their imitation: grant that we may merit bothto keep in mind the lesson of His patience, and to be madepartakers of His Resurrection. Through the same.

EPISTLE. Phil. 2, 5-11. Brethren, Have this mind in youwhich was also in Christ Jesus, Who though He was by

nature God, did not consider being equal to God a thing to beclung to, but emptied Himself, taking the nature of a slaveand being made like unto men. And appearing in the form ofman, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, evento death on a cross. Therefore God has exalted Him and hasbestowed upon Him the Name that is above every name, sothat at the Name of Jesus every knee should bend of those inheaven, on earth and under the earth, and every tongueshould confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory ofGod the Father.

GRADUAL. Ps. 72, 24, 1, 3. Thou hast held me by my righthand; and by Thy will Thou hast conducted me; and

with glory Thou hast received me. V. How good is God toIsrael, to those who are of a right heart! But my feet were al-most moved, my steps had well-nigh slipped; because I had azeal on occasion of sinners, seeing the peace of sinners.

TRACT. Ps. 21, 2-9; 18, 19, 22; 24, 32. O God, my God, lookupon me: why hast Thou forsaken me? V. Far from my

salvation, are the words of my sins. V. O my God, by dayshall I cry, and Thou wilt not hear; and by night, and it shallnot be reputed as folly in me. V. But Thou dwellest in the ho-ly place, the praise of Israel. V. In Thee have our fathershoped: they have hoped, and Thou hast delivered them. V.They cried to Thee and they were saved: they trusted in Thee, and were not confounded. V. But I am a worm, and no man:the reproach of men, and the outcast of the people. V. All theywho saw me, laughed me to scorn; they spoke with their lips, and wagged their heads. V. He hoped in the Lord, let Himdeliver him: let Him save him, seeing he delights in Him. V.But they looked and stared upon me: they parted my gar-ments amongst them, and upon my vesture they cast lots. V.Deliver me from the lion’s mouth: and my lowness from thehorns of the unicorns. V. You who fear the Lord, praise Him:all you the seed of Jacob, glorify Him. V. There shall be de-clared to the Lord a generation to come: and the heavens shallshow forth His justice. V. To a people that shall be born, which the Lord has made.

The Passion- see insert (High Mass ONLY)

GOSPEL (7am Low Mass Only): After they had crucified Je-sus, from the sixth hour there was darkness over the

whole land until the ninth hour. But about the ninth hourJesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabac-thani,” that is “My God, my God, why hast thou forsakenme?” And some of the bystanders on hearing this said, “Thisman is calling Elias.” And immediately one of them ran and,

DISTRIBUTION OF PALMS: The faithful are invited to ap-proach the communion rail to receive a palm. In receiving thepalm, it is customary to kiss first the palm then the hand of thecelebrant. During the procession, the blessed palm branchesare held in the hand. During the singing of the Passion, thefaithful should also hold their palms. For the ancient Jews, this was a sign of joy. By this emblem of triumph, we protestagainst the insults offered to Christ by His enemies.

Organ Prelude:Hosanna in ExcelsisComposer: Giovanni P. da Palestrina (1525-1594)

Welcome to St. Mary’s Oratory and the traditional Latin Mass offered by the Institute of Christ the King Sover-eign Priest, with the gracious permission of Bishop David Malloy. We are pleased to have you join us in this venerableact of worship and invite you to return often. In the traditional Mass everyone has his proper role whether it be cele-brant, choir, server, usher, or congregation. At High Mass, the choir makes all responses simply because that is theirfunction. The congregation, on the other hand, responds internally, as opposed to vocally, and this is still, according toPope Pius XII in his encyclical “Mediator Dei” active participation. Active participation is wide-ranging, including sing-ing, silent meditation or even recitation of the Rosary during Mass, because active participation does not necessarilymean vocal responses. To assist at Mass more fully, use the missals provided in the pews, paying particular attention toany notes in the margin. All the “proper,” or particular parts of the Mass are in the bulletin. Simply follow thosearound you for when to stand, sit, and kneel. Please keep a “holy silence” in the church at all times, out of respect forChrist’s presence in the tabernacle. Since there is no mixing of the old and new rites, Holy Communion is received onthe tongue while kneeling at the altar rail without responding “Amen” when receiving the Host.

A kind reminder: only Catholics in the state of grace and havingfasted for 1 hour, are free to receive Holy Communion.

“Enter this door as if the floor within were gold, and every wall of jewels, of wealth untold. As if a choir of fire were singing clear. Nor shout, nor rush, but hush, for God is here!”

But the rest said, “Wait, let ussee whether Elias is coming to save him.” But Jesus again cried out with a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and theearth quaked, and the rocks were rent, and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleeparose.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 68, 21-22. My heart has expected reproach and misery; and I looked for one who would grieve togetherwith Me, and there was none; I sought one who would comfort Me, and found none; and they gave Me gall for My
