St. Mary Star of the Sea, Pray for us!

“Epiphany” comes from the Greek meaning "Manifestation". Today we celebrate the arrival of the Magi bearing gifts for the Christ Child. This is the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus. Only Matthew tells us this great story, so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of God’s promise to us… God’s promise of love and salvation! Jesus taught us that whenever we assist someone in need, we are assisting HIM! When you give a gift to a child or family that really needs your help… you are giving that gift to Our Lord. You reached out a big, very generous helping hand to the children and families of St. John’s Bread & Life. You gave so many wonderful, much needed gifts! We received the following letter:

December 16, 2015 Dear Parishioners,

I would like to thank all of you who participated and donated to make this year’s Sponsor a Family a success. I write this note, pleasantly tired from the hectic rush of the pre-holidays, deeply in awe of the generosity of individuals to those we serve, Your support allowed us to provide a Merry Christmas for over 2,000 families. Over the past year we served 800,000 meals, saw 5,000 individuals for much needed services, and distributed over 350,000 meals through our unique Digital Food Pantry. As we begin another year we continue the struggle and the mission of addressing those issues of poverty particularly as they apply to hunger. Pope Francis has reminded us, “that we are all in this together”. Thank you for remembering this. Gratefully, Anthony Butler Executive Director - St. John’s Bread & Life

St. Mary Star of The Sea Brooklyn

When last year’s Annual Catholic Ap-peal began, I made this promise to you, “ If we reach our Parish target of $40,000 actually donated, we will be able to make needed re-pairs to (and painting of) the Sanctuary of our Church. ” Our final totals for the ACA, that ended Dec. 31, 2015, were 98 parishioners (families/individuals) pledged the amount of $39, 505 … of this $39,030 was actually donat-ed. We fell $970.00 short of our desired goal. I thank all who donated! You did a won-derful job of supporting your Church. We may have missed the goal but I feel we were close enough so… right after the Christmas season, which ends next Sunday, the work begins! We’ll take down all the decorations and put away all the statues after Mass and finish on Monday. On Tuesday, John Tiedemann, Inc. comes in and scaffolds go up! The Tiedemann family has been painting our beautiful Church for decades. They repaired and painted her when the infamous “tarp” was finally removed. I have heard so much about that absurd tarp ( it could not possibly have kept the warm air from going up to the ceiling) but I have never seen a picture of it. Someone must have docu-mented that monstrosity with a photo; if you have one, please show it to me. I also used Tiedemann 8 years ago when I had the two wings of our Church fully repaired & painted. We will have the sanctuary walls re-paired and painted from the bottom of the win-dow sills down (all the way up to the ceiling would be way over budget). We will also have the walls over the two side altars repainted. The work will take approximately 10 days to 2 weeks. The cost will exceed the $21,776 we are getting back from the Diocese over their goal but our beautiful Church is WORTH IT!

There are many people to thank for cleaning and decorating our beautiful

Church for our Christmas celebrations, and so many other things that all went into making these past two weeks special. I am writing this on Tues-day Dec. 22nd; before the big night/day. I am col-lecting all the names of those who helped us. I will have a big thank you article in next week’s bulletin.

Have a great week!

LOOKING IN THE

RIGHT PLACES

“Appearances can be deceiving,” as the saying goes. As we cele-brate the epiphania, the “appearing” of the eternal Word of God on earth, this is still true. What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God’s glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives. We have many expectations about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come up-on the true appearance of God’s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ.

This Bulletin had to be submitted on Dec. 23rd, so we are unable to report collection results.

Next week we will report your total donations for Christmas Flowers,

Catholic Charities, Christmas Mass, Remembrance, & My Christmas Gift to My Church. Please help us by bringing

in your back envelopes, so we can average $2,300 each week.

THANK YOU!

Non-Catholics are invited to join us in prayer. We kindly remind them not to come

forward to receive Holy Communion. Catholics who are new to our Parish are

asked to please introduce themselves to Fr. Chris after Mass. Registration may be done

at the rectory during office hours or by dropping the parish membership form in the collection basket. “Active” parishioners are

those who are registered, join us regularly for the celebration of the Mass and use the

weekly donation envelopes. Only in this way can we issue

documents attesting to Parish Membership and Catholic practice.
