Fi h Sunday of Lent – March 29, 2020
“Did I not assure you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”
.
MARTHA : I KNOW HE WILL RISE AGAIN ON THE LAST DAY. BUT I WANT MY
BROTHER BACK NOW.
MARY: MARTHA IS RIGHT LORD IF YOU HAD BEEN HERE OUR
BROTHER WOULD NEVER HAVE DIED.
THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
2020
JESUS LOVE FOR MARTHA AND MARY
THE CONVERSION OF MARTHA
AND
OH BY THE LAW
THE RAISING OF LAZARUS
The event that most of us remember about the Gospel of the Fi h Sunday of Lent is the raising of
Lazarus. But the story really takes us through the heights and the depths of human feeling and presents the
full diapason of Scripture teaching.
The background of the story is the deep love Jesus had for Martha and Mary , a love which he did not
abuse, and the grief he shoved them on the occasion of the death of their Brother Lazarus.
Then the story develops as Martha herself goes through a conversion, asking Jesus for a
miracle, the miracle that would bring her brother back to her. Then she goes a step higher, in this person
who can bring it about.
Then, calling on his divine power and showing the depth of his human compassion,
he grants the request of Martha and Mary and restores Lazarus to life.
