The theme of the week is FINDING SOLUTIONS and our poem of the week is ‘An Advancement of Learning’ by

Seamus Heaney (1939 - 2013).

I took the embankment path

(As always, deferring

The bridge). The river nosed past,

Pliable, oil-skinned, wearing

A transfer of gables and sky.

Hunched over the railing,

Well away from the road now, I

Considered the dirty-keeled swans.

Something slobbered curtly, close,

Smudging the silence: a rat

Slimed out of the water and

My throat sickened so quickly that

I turned down the path in cold sweat

But God, another was nimbling

Up the far bank, tracing its wet

Arcs on the stones. Incredibly then

I established a dreaded

Bridgehead. I turned to stare

With deliberate, thrilled care

At my hitherto snubbed rodent.

He clockworked aimlessly a while,

Stopped, back bunched and glistening,

Ears plastered down on his knobbed skull,

Insidiously listening.

The tapered tail that followed him,

The raindrop eye, the old snout:

One by one I took all in.

He trained on me. I stared him out

Forgetting how I used to panic

When his grey brothers scraped and fed

Behind the hen-coop in our yard,

On ceiling boards above my bed.

This terror, cold, wet-furred, small-clawed,

Retreated up a pipe for sewage.

I stared a minute after him.

Then I walked on and crossed the bridge.

What problem does Heaney face in this poem and how does he find a SOLUTION?

St Marylebone are taking part in Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2015 again this year

to collect for an exciting range of equipment and experiences and help

children to eat well, move well and live well.

In 2014, we collected 12 411 Active Kids vouchers.

This year we’re hoping to collect 18 000. Together we can make this happen.

Active Kids vouchers can be collected from 28 January until 5 May

at all Sainsbury’s stores, petrol stations and when ordering

groceries online.

Most importantly, please remember to donate your vouchers to us. We’ll

need them by early May so we can count them and send them off to get our

new equipment.

Let’s make this our most successful year yet!

To find out more visit Sainsburys.co.uk/ActiveKids

Ms. Ashton.

Key Stage 3

On Tuesday 21st April, 61 KS3 pupils took part in the CREST Celebration Evening. The evening showcased

the work of pupils taking part in the Bronze and Silver levels of the STEM awards, called CREST awards.

The evening began with the three Silver CREST teams presenting their projects, titled

‘Stations of the Future’, ahead of their final assessment day. Following the presentations, the Bronze CREST

students exhibit their work in a science fair. The diversity of the 26 projects on show was huge, from

questions such as ‘How did the Universe begin?’ to ‘Is all drinking water the same’. Below you can read

accounts of the Bronze CREST award from Year 7 pupils

My Bronze CREST Award Experience

By Maryana Akhtar 7h

The Bronze Crest Award Project Celebration Evening took place on the 21st April 2015. It was a phenomenal

opportunity to discover the other different and unique there were. We presented our project on a coloured board

which was filled with pictures and information for the parents, teachers and all the people that were there to celebrate

this achievement. During the course of 10 weeks we had to decide on a question that we had to answer and produced

a research project on it. I think that this helped us be organised and manage our time well because we had to do this

by a deadline. Some of us worked in groups, others worked in pair and the rest of us worked by ourselves. In

addition, the Bronze Crest Award developed some of our qualities like teamwork, determination and resilience, so

that we kept going and did not give up. Taking part in the Bronze Crest Award Project and sharing our achievements

was fantastic. I am defiantly looking forward to carrying on this opportunity by taking part in the Silver Crest Award.

My Bronze CREST Award Experience

By Eliona S.

The Bronze Crest Awards were a great opportunity to really explore a theory in detail and invent our own

experiments to test the theory out. We could choose our own topic, I chose to analyse the differences between Coke

and Coke zero. I invented some fun experiments so that I could test the sugar content of both and how this affected

taste and how much energy they gave you. Doing it yourself really helped you understand the experiment.

The celebration evening was brilliant because you got to see all of the other interesting experiments other students

had prepared and had a go at them as well as enjoying all the interest in your work. I felt very proud.
