Issue 1 Term 1 Week 2 Thursday 6 February 2014

From the Principal

Dear Parents

Welcome to the 2014 school year. We offer the warmest of welcomes to all of our students, families and staff. A special welcome to all our new students and families starting in Kindergarten and in Years 1-6. We hope everyone had a relaxing break and that all students are looking forward to having a safe, happy and successful year at St Michael’s.

As we start our new school year, I reflect on the importance of the partnership between individuals and the commu-nity in which we live.

We hope that throughout the year, our school will be a place where staff, students and families have opportunities to experience God’s presence in our lives. Although he lived about two and a half thousand years ago, the prophet, Jeremiah, has words that are still relevant for us at the beginning of this new school year: “The Lord says, I know the plans I have for you ... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremi-ah 29:11.

Within our school, we can all try to model God’s love for each one of us, by being a renewing community where all members are valued, affirmed and empowered; where our commitment to Gospel values is expressed in every fac-et of our school’s endeavours.

For this sentiment to continue throughout the year, it will require our collective wisdom and generosity of spirit to be at the forefront of all our communications.

We all know that children receive the best education when parents and teachers work as a team. Parents’ enthusi-asm, support and involvement are integral to the success of our school as are the skills, dedication and profession-alism of teachers. Together, staff and parents can provide educational excellence for every student, so that they can achieve their personal best. Together, we can support one another to provide a friendly academic environment and, when appropriate, celebrate our achievements.

Education today is a complex engagement because of the intensity and variety of external influences particularly through various forms of media and electronic communications. Our school has a special role in assisting every parent with the education of their children, so that all children will develop a sense of personal responsibility and learn the correct use of freedom. Throughout the year, our school will provide counter experiences of liturgy and prayer to assist the spiritual and moral maturity of all our students.

May this school year see staff and parents in partnership in our collective role of secular and faith education.

“ God, our Father,

We ask that Your Spirit be a constant influence in the lives of all who make up our school community this year.

Help our students to be discerning, so that the outcomes of their choices will be in accord with Christian values. Amen.”

Wishing you every blessing for the week ahead.

Welcome

Dobbing v telling ‘Dobbing’, is when you are trying to get someone into trou-ble. ‘Telling’, is when you are getting your EARLY WARNING SIGNS’. You feel unsafe, so you must tell someone you trust who will listen to you. At school this would be a teacher. Wellbeing policy

St Michael’s aim is to provide a safe, pleasant environment for all children, staff and parents which fosters a sense of belong-ing, positive self-esteem and a love of learning. Our updated Wellbeing Policy is contained in our Parent Handbook. It is also available for viewing on our website at the following location:

http://www.stmichaelsbhills.catholic.edu.au/SiteData/162/UserFiles/Policy/Wellbeing%20Policy.pdf

Curriculum

This year St Michael’s will continue to work on the implementa-tion of the National Curriculum across all grades. We will con-tinue to focus on Religious education, numeracy and literacy, teaching and learning as well as moving forward with the inte-gration of technology into the classroom for students and staff. We will work together as a staff to deliver quality teaching and learning opportunities for our students.

School Building Program

During the holidays, the Years 5 and 6 classrooms were remod-elled to provide a learning environment that will give the stu-dents the best opportunity to maximise their learning in the 21st Century and assist their transition to high school at the end of Year 6.

We are currently in discussions with architects to improve the facilities across all Year groups, particularly Years 3 and 4. The-se discussions are in the early stages and further information will be provided during the year as the plans progress.

Communication with families

Improving communication between St Michael’s and students’ families is vital in the ongoing partnership that exists between school and families. This year we will be introducing a Schoolbag App as well as continuing our electronic newsletter distribution. In order to participate in both these forms of com-munication, each family will need to provide their current email address. An email address form for 2014 is being sent home this week, please complete and return to the school office as soon as possible.

School Attendance

It is important for your child’s wellbeing and academic pro-gress that they attend school regularly and complete each school day. Children need to attend school every day from 8.45 am until 3.10 pm unless illness prevents their attend-ance. Please ensure that appointments are made outside of school hours in order to ensure that your child can maximise their learning potential. Learning takes place from 8.45 am until the final bell at 3.10 pm. Being late or taking your child early from school, particularly on a regular basis, may hinder their personal and academic progress. This is often reflect-ed in school reports.

Parents taking their children out of school on a regular basis will be contacted by the Principal. Should you need to take your child out of school early on an unavoidable occasion, a note should be sent in to the class teacher. This will mini-mise the interruption to learning time for all students. Please avoid disruption to teachers and students by arriving unex-pectedly to pick up children without prior notice.

School Uniform

Thank you to all our families for supporting the school uni-form policy and by ensuring your child is wearing the correct uniform. This includes wearing joggers that are predomi-nantly white. It is essential that students wear their hats dur-ing recess, lunch and sport. Please ensure your child’s hat is labelled and that they assume responsibility for looking after their hat at all times.

Carpark

It is a privilege for St Michael’s to use the Parish car park. For this practice to continue we need to treat our parish com-munity with respect and not park in the Parish allocated spaces. There is also no parent parking in the St Michael’s Family Centre or in any areas around the Church entry and exit.

Safety of children and adults is critical when colle cting children from school. Please observe all parking si gns and road rules when collecting children to ensure t he safety and wellbeing of all members of our school a nd community.

ST MICHAEL’S BAULKHAM HILLS - ALLERGY AWARENESS Throughout our school we have a number of children with life threatening allergies to various forms of food, latex, dust, cats and insect stings This is a serious matter, one that our school must address.

Some children have allergies that are so severe tha t smells or touch could trigger a reaction. In order to do this we appeal to all parents to assist us in caring for these children by considering the type of foods you pack for your own child’s recess and lunch.

Our aim is to minimise the amount of peanut and tree nut products brought into the school. These foods are ex-tremely dangerous to our children with allergies and cause 50% of food allergic deaths.

Common foods that trigger an allergic reaction are listed below and we ask you to refrain from sending them to school and to seek suitable alternatives.

The Canteen does not sell any of these products. In the case of a child bringing a nut product to school, teachers will bring the matter to the attention of parents.

There are many foods that DO NOT contain peanuts or nuts in their ingredients list, but the food package has the statement. “May contain traces of dairy, nut or seed”. This food may be brought to school and consumed only by non-allergic children.

Due to safety and concerns, we discourage children from sharing food and drink. We would also appreciate par-ents speaking to their children regarding this matter. Your child’s diet at home need not change.

Below is a list of foods that are safe for you to choose from. We’re sure you can think of many others.

Fruit and vegetables Dried fruits, Fruit snack packs Vegemite, jam, honey, cheese spreads Parker’s Pretzels. Rice crackers Chips, Popcorn Plain biscuits – sweet or savoury – without nuts Chocolate biscuits – without nuts Plain Cornflakes, Rice Bubbles, Weetbix, etc – without nuts Fruit based muesli bars and snack bars – without nuts Yoghurt – without nuts mixes Lollies and confectionary items – marshmallow, spearmint leaves, jelly babies, snakes,
