Dear Parents & Guardians,
What a lovely community feel we had as we gathered with many of our fami-
lies for our Welcome BBQ last Thursday. We were blessed with magnificent
weather as well as with the many families who came, shared stories and de-
licious food. I went home so happy that I have come to a place that is more
than a school but a community. Thanks to all the staff who joined in and I
hope you enjoyed the photos we sent out last week.
This week you would have been to your child’s information session with their
classroom teacher and engaged in some activities that show how your child
learns during their day at school. I am sure you found the session fun as
well as interesting. If you have any questions regarding your child’s learning
please always feel welcome to speak to your child’s teacher or myself, it is
important we continue to engage in conversation about the learning that oc-
curs at St Michael’s and we truly value your input and opinions.
This week we also had some parents join with our Family Partnership Con-
sultant to discuss ways in which we can work together to ensure our com-
munity stays strong and continues to strengthen the relationships between
school and family as well as the wider community. Thank you to those who
attended for time and thoughts.
Prayer for Lent
Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be
tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are
assaulted by many temptations;
and, as you know the weaknesses of
each of us, let each one find you mighty to save;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

In speaking of working together you will read in the newsletter a invitation for parents or carers to
join our School Board. This is a most valuable way in which families can contribute not only tho
their child’s learning but also to the growth and development of our school community. The Board
only meets a couple of times a term, so please consider coming along and join us at our first
meeting to be held on 1st March 2016 at 6pm
I ask all families to please take care when dropping off and picking up your children. I have seen
cars parking in front of and across our school crossing, this is not only illegal and could incur a
heavy fine , it is very dangerous for our children. Your child is very safe in our Playground, super-
vised by a teacher while they wait for you. So please take the time to park safely and walk to collect your
children. I will be spending time at the front of school ensuring that this area is safe and that families ad-
here to the parking regulations in place.

Parking Regulations
We ask parents to adhere to parking regulations in and around the streets which surround St MIchael’s School. Please remember that
the area directly in front of the school in Brougham Street is a drop off zone at the beginning and end of the school day. It is not ok to
park your car and come into the school. if you are parking in this area you may receive a parking fine as officers are always patrolling
St Michaels ‘Parish School Board
From the chairman of the board
The Board is an advisory body and its role is to support the school in matters relating to education,
school policy, and faith. It provides links between the parish priest, the principal and the school body,
and promotes community development.
The chief role is to support the principal, to improve the school in areas of education, future enrol-
ments, budgeting, and provision of school facilities and amenity.
Participation in the school board is of immense value to children. Research has shown improved
learning capacity and outcomes for children whose parents are involved in the school. I have found
my own involvement at St Michael’s to have been deeply satisfying for my child and on a personal
level.
We are seeking new members for the 2016 year. The board meets twice each term on Tuesday nights
for one hour – which would mean only two hours of your time each term.
Come along to the next board meeting on 1st March 2016 at 6pm. For further enquires please con-
tact the school reception

Library News
Hello all,
A few things to celebrate this week.
1. We received a free copy of Kym Lardner’s book THE
DRAGON’S LIE from the author himself!!
2. We have started our library focus on Japan , exploring the
country and culture through Literature and multimedia.
So pleasing to see so many children borrowing books to take home
and share with their families. Remember it is important to return
books each week to either re- borrow or borrow new books from our
large selection.
Have great days reading,
Cheers, Kathie
Term 1 – No hat, no play, no fun today!!!
All children should be wearing a hat when out in the yard.

Art News
This week in the art room there has been a lot of printing and painting related to geogra-
phy. Students from LA 3 and 5 are experimenting with making mono prints based on maps
and the sort of seaweed, leaves and feathers that might be found on Macquarie Island.
Closer to home, LA 1 students are creating their own stamp prints inspired by Australia’s
national gemstone - the Opal, mined in South Australia. LA 6 students practised painting a
wash as the background for a sea picture. LA 2 students came upstairs for their first visit
to the art room and had fun drawing and building. On display near the lift are our shapes
of Australia by LA 6 and LA 1.
Parent Information Evening.
On Wednesday night we had our parent information evening, it was run a little bit differ-
ent this year, allowing parents and careers to see what their children experience in class
on a daily basis. Thank-you to all the families that attended the evening and partici-
pated in the activities.
The evening was an opportunity for parents and carer’s to speak to teachers informally
and ask question. We would encourage parent if they have any concerns to make an
appointment with their classroom teacher for a one to one chat.

Media Statement from Bishop Vincent Long ofm conv, Australian Catholic Bishops Dele-gate for Refugees regarding the High Court’s decision on offshore processing
“Following the High Court decision, the Australian Government’s response to people seeking asylum, including babies born in
Australia and their parents, should focus on protecting them from harm and respecting their human dignity.”
“I urge the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Immigration Peter Dutton to show compassion and mercy towards
these families and not act in a way that will cause even more harm than has been done already.”
“The Catholic Church is prepared to collaborate with other community organisations to provide support for asylum seekers.”
“I urge the Australian Government to ensure that no child is subject to an unsafe and harmful environment and that no-one is
returned to where they may face physical, psychological and sexual violence and harm.”
“The Catholic Church opposes mandatory detention and offshore detention because these policy responses do not respect the
dignity of people seeking our help.
“Governments have a responsibility to manage migration flows, but the Australian Government’s current approach is harsh and
should change.”
Bishop Vincent Long is the Australian Catholic Bishops spokesman on refugees and a former refugee.
