Nov. 1 Feast of All Saints Liturgical Ministers

We are in need of liturgical ministers for all Mass times for the Feast of All Saints, Nov. 1. It’s almost here! Please volunteer NOW to ensure that we have ministers to help our Liturgy flow smoothly and be the most beautiful Liturgy possible. We are celebrating all those who have gone before us and entered into Heaven, great and small alike! This is a beautiful feast day! Come celebrate and share in the communion of the saints, our intercessors in Heaven. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Parish Announcement

Next weekend is the Facility & Property collection. Your con-tinued support is needed and very appreciated!

Thank you to the St. Peter School Graduating Class of 2017, the Knights of Columbus and the Kramer family. The funds to refinish the old St. Mary’s cross and for the Ten Commandments inlays were donated by these groups. Thanks also to Greg Rackers and crew, who donated the labor and materials for the foundation of the monument.

Catholic Stewardship Appeal -

The parish is intimately united to the diocese as the diocese is united to the seat of Peter, This is really what we mean when we say “one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” By making a gift to the Catholic Stewardship Appeal, you are supporting the work of the Church in our 38-county diocese. If you are still thinking about making a pledge, please consider doing it today by check, or online by visiting diojeffcity.org and clicking “Giving” on the menu bar. We count on your prayerful and fi-nancial support to help meet the various needs of parishes, missions and schools in the diocese. Thank you if you have already made a gift.

STEWARDSHIP NOTES Thank you again to all who participate so wholeheartedly in our parish! One hundred and sixty-three returned their commitment forms for giving time, talent, and treasure last week. If you have not yet returned yours, please do so now. (Blank forms are available in the back of the church.)

If you have ideas to give our parish more vitality, get involved; Christ’s work is never done. The Diocese has been conducting a Viability and Vitality study this year. Our own and every par-ish in the Diocese has participated and now the Diocese is cor-relating the information in order to make some recommenda-tions in early 2018 to help everyone. The Church changes along with the world to serve in every time and every place. One of the changes our own Diocese continues to re-spond to is the shrinking number of priests. Last week we re-ceived this statement from the Diocese:

“Broad consultation has already taken place at parishes through meetings with parish councils and leadership teams. The intent of this update is not only to keep you in-formed, but to encourage your prayers and support for your parish and deanery during this important process. “

Some realities that we are trying to do our best to prepare for are: 1) our average age of active and incardinated priests con-tinues to rise—it’s currently 57; and 2) through actuarial studies, it is anticipated that there will be 20 less active and incardinated priests of our diocese by 2022 (5 years from now)—the total active number decreasing from 66 to 46. Some difficult ques-tions and discussions will need to take place to prepare for the future. We encourage your support and prayers.”

Weekly Collections

CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP APPEAL 129 donors from our parish have contributed $24,655; our par-ish goal is $160,000. Please remember CSA as part of your stewardship and the practical tithing guide of giving 10% of your family income to charity: 5% to the parish, 1% to the Diocese (CSA), and 4% to other charities.

Pray for our Priests Today is Priesthood Sunday. Let us pray for our Priests and give thanks to God for their dedication, prayer and commitment to serve His people. It is not always easy being a priest in to-day’s world. Let us pray for our priests to grow in holiness, wis-dom, faith and love. We give thanks that we have priests to serve our spiritual needs and bring us Jesus in the Eucharist. Our priests are indeed a blessing that we should not take for granted. Here is one idea on how to pray for the priests you have known in your life: When praying the rosary, offer the first decade for the priest who baptized you, the second for the priest who gave you first Communion, the third for the bishop who confirmed you, the fourth for the priest who witnessed your marriage, and the fifth decade for the priest who will anoint you at your death.

NURSE’S NOTES

Here Comes Halloween! And All Saints Day!

Halloween actually has its basic origins in the Catholic Church. Halloween means "All Saints Eve" or "All Hallows Eve". All Saints Day is a religious holiday observed by the Catholic Church and set aside for worship of all the saints in heaven. They used to consider it with all solemnity as one of the most significant observances of the Church year. The American origin of Halloween extends further from the Celts celebration of Samhain (pronounced sow - in) which is a Druidic festival made to celebrate the end of the harvest. As with a lot of Celtic lore, faeries were thought to be extremely active at this time as they ushered in the winter. (Source: http://EzineArticles.com/3077957).

These autumn events like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties, and eat yummy treats. These events are also oppor-tunities to provide nutritious snacks, get physical activity, and focus on safety. Below are tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests.

Remember to pray for all our parishioners who are hospital-ized, homebound or in residential care, that they be healed and comforted. And please call us if you or a family member is hospitalized or homebound and you would like me to visit, pray with you and/or assist you with questions and health care concerns. You may contact me at 636-8159x369 or via email: [email protected].

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent skin and eye irritation.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.

Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decora-tive contact lenses.

Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook well.

Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Otherwise, stay outside.

Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

Time and Talent

Many thanks to Shirley Arnel, who faithfully enters your completed Time and Talent forms into our parishioner database. She has done this tirelessly for several years, and happily shares her time and data entry talent to help our parish! Doing something like this, just once or twice a year, is a huge help for our staff and ministry leaders who depend on those who volunteer for their ministries. What could you do that could have an impact like that? Think about it, and share that talent with your parish. If you haven’t turned in your Stewardship form, please send it in as soon as possible so that we may benefit from your time and talent as well!
