Dear Parishioners, There are sons who follow in their father’s footsteps, to continue the family “business.” My optometrist is the son of an optometrist. The sixth president of the United States, John Quincy Adams, is the son of the second president, John Adams. George W. Bush, the 43rd president, is the son of George H.W. Bush, the 41st. John the Baptist’s father was Zechariah, a priest who presided at worship in a temple. In the Jewish culture of the time, it would not have made sense for John

to preach and teach in the desert. It would have been natural for John to follow in his father’s footsteps by presiding at liturgies in a temple. The way of life which Jesus followed also confused others. According to Luke’s gospel, He went to the synagogue at His native village of Nazareth and read from today’s first reading from Isaiah (“The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me…”) Having heard about His teaching, Jesus’ fellow Nazarenes were surprised because He was the son of a carpenter. In their way of thinking, Jesus’ place was not in front of worshipers but instead in a carpentry shop. God’s thoughts and/or actions have never been the way the world would expect from Him, something which the coming celebration of Christmas, when God began His human life on earth, reminds us; that God took on our humanity so that one day we would share in His divinity. In the Word,

Rejoice, the Lord Is near! Today is the Third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday, the Sunday of joy. In the liturgy the invitation rings out several times to rejoice, why? Because the Lord is near. Christmas is near. The Christian message is called to gospel (good news), an announcement of joy for all people. The Church is not a haven for sad people but a joyful home! And those who are sad find joy in her, true joy! The joy of the gospel consists in knowing one is welcomed and loved by God,

who comes to save us and who seeks to help, especially those who are fearful of heart. His coming among us strengthens us, makes us steadfast, gives us courage and, when our lives become arid, makes the desert and the steppe rejoice and blossom. However great our limitations and dismay, we are not allowed to be sluggish and vacillating when faced with difficulty and our own weakness. On the contrary, we are invited to strengthen our weak hands, to make firm our feeble knees, to be strong and to fear not, because our God always sows us the greatness of his mercy. God gives us the strength to go forward. God is always with us in order to help us go forward. God loves us so very much. That is why God is with us to help us, to strengthen us, to help us go forward. Courage! Always forward! Jesus, help me share my joy with others. Today I will…

Let us never be so busy as to forget what the focus of Christmas is really

about, the new life for all of us that came to be through the birth of the Christ child. • If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands

of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

• If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

• If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

• If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

• Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love is kind, though harried and tired. Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

• Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.

• Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure.
