SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH  3

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

PASTOR’S CORNER

[As 60 Minutes likes to say: “As wereported to you last September 21st  , …]

School is in full swing and once againI hear the voices of angels calling outto each other outside in the play yard

during recess and P.E. Amidst all ofthe laughter, shouting, and generalmayhem, occasionally, I hear thefamiliar cry, “BUT THAT’S NOTFAIR!” And I wonder, how early onin their young lives did they pick upthe notion and the idea thatsomething is or is not fair. Did theyfirst get it from a parent or a siblingor, perhaps from a playmate? Aparent, it seems to me, even thoughthey believe it was he or she that got

the idea across, must still be at leaststartled the first time one’s own childpronounces the “fair or not fair”judgment upon something the parenthas done. Even some of our children with family at Mass protest that othermembers of the family receive a hostand they only get a blessing. Thelook I often get is one of “What’s up with that!”

Or perhaps more germane to today’sgospel passage: “Dad, you and Mom

always give each other more money when we go to the store than yougive to me. That’s not fair!” To which observation mom or dadreplies, “Are you envious becauseMom and Dad are generous with

each other? Are we not free to do with our own money as we wish?Honey, we are not cheating you. Here, take your usual 35 centsallowance and go!” See how usefuland practical today’s gospel is? (35cents, you know, “back in the day.”)

For us Christians, on the difficultyscale “The last will be first and thefirst will be last” is right up there with “Turn the other cheek” and“Forgive your neighbor.” The whole

idea of a deathbed conversion orconfession, or the last rights andabsolution given to a convicted serialkiller grates against most people’ssense of fairness. “But what aboutthe rest of us who live decent livesfor decades and work at keeping thecommandments every day of ourlives? You mean to tell me that I’msupposed to believe that this creep will get into heaven after his lethalinjection even before I do?” What

are we to say of God’s dispensationof grace, forgiveness and salvation? Is God not allowed to save the wayGod chooses to?

 The first reading and responsorial

spoke of “our God who is generousin forgiving,” whose “thoughts arenot our thoughts” and who “is nearto ALL who call upon him.” Is itnot, therefore, our place as hiscreatures to be humble before himand ultimately to surrender our(sometimes hasty and emotion-packed) judgment to his merciful, divine judgment? On this Earth ourjudgments and thoughts are and willalways be human and thereforeincomplete and imperfect—not

omniscient. The God who made usknows us better than we knowourselves. We have every reason tocurb our temptations to be the judge, the jury, and the executioner—everyreason to be humble. For most of us,good medicine, in this regard, issimply to recall the last time wejudged something to be the case, onlyto find out later that we were dead wrong. I hate when that happens!

Dear Parishioners,

“But that’s not fair …”

This Week’s

Featured Saint—

St. Vincent de Paul

The deathbed confession ofa servant opened Vincent's

eyes to the spiritual needs of thepeasantry of France. This became acrucial moment in the life of the manfrom a small farm in Gascony, France, who had become a priest with littlemore ambition than to have acomfortable life.

The Countess de Gondi (whose servanthe had helped) persuaded her husbandto endow and support a group ofmissionaries who would work amongpoor tenant farmers and country people.

Vincent became the leader of what isnow known as the Congregation of theMission, or the Vincentians. Thesepriests, with vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability, were to devotethemselves entirely to the people insmaller towns and villages.

L a t e r , V i n c e n t e s t a b l i s h e dconfraternities of charity for thespiritual and physical relief of the poorand sick. He organized the rich womenof Paris to collect funds for his

missionary projects, founded severalhospitals, collected relief funds for the victims of war and ransomed galleyslaves from North Africa. He waszealous in conducting retreats for clergyat a time when there was great laxity, abuse and ignorance among them. He was a pioneer in clerical training andinstrumental in establishing seminaries.

Most remarkably, Vincent was bytemperament a very irascible person. Hesaid that except for the grace of God he

would have been "hard and repulsive, rough and cross." But he became atender and affectionate man, verysensitive to the needs of others.

Pope Leo XIII made him the patron ofall charitable societies. Outstandingamong these, of course, is the Society ofSt. Vincent de Paul, founded in 1833 byhis admirer Blessed Frédéric Ozanam.

St. Rita

Capital Campaign—

Questions & Answers

Q: I want to make a pledge to the Campaign, butwant to know if some unforeseen crisis happens tome, am I legally bound to this pledge?

A: Pledges to the St. Rita Capital Campaign are notlegally binding. We trust that everyone who makes apledge makes it in good faith and will keep thiscommitment. However, we are aware that none of us canknow the future or predict with certainty what will happento us. It is with this realization that it was decided that our

Campaign pledges should not be legally binding.

Predicting the future is always a challenge. This is true ofour Campaign also. Many have asked us “when will webegin seeing some of the renovations to the Church andto Gara Hall?” Careful planning is taking place and wecan say that it will be soon; but, of course, we need tohave the funds in place before we can begin. Wecontinue to reach out to parishioners and to donors togive generously to the Campaign. Please considersending in your pledge as soon as possible.
