Assistant Principals Message Inquisitive Minds Last Wednesday 8 August, our Year 3 and 4 students took part in “Inquisitive Minds – Out of the Box”. This is a problem-solving workshop developed through a joint venture by the Mathematics Association of NSW (MANSW) and Inquisitive Minds a company set up by mainly high school Mathematics teachers. The goal of Inquisitive Minds is to get students to think “out of the box” to find solutions to Mathematical puzzles across all strands of Math: numbers, patters, shapes, geometry and data. Students worked in collaborative groups of three to solve a series of problems in 1.5-hour sessions. Students were able to use concrete materials to assist them with their solutions, but most importantly, they had to communicate, reason and work collaboratively with their group. All the students were engaged throughout their session and they all had fun, there was a great “buzz” and energy in the room. Students of all skill levels were catered to, as the problems relied on not only mathematical knowledge, but reasoning, creativity and manipulation of information. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who assisted on the day. I had great feedback from all present on the day. Parent Feedback It is great to see all the students are involved Some of the problems are so challenging, I didn’t know how to solve it till I saw the clever way the students went about finding the answer Teacher Feedback I loved the way they keep focusing the kids on the important part of the question and made sure they read the whole question. I’ll use this in my class. Ms Warby

Inquisitive minds was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to engage in some thinking activities. Also a great opportunity for staff to watch their class in this type of environment. Great materials and great organisation. Mrs Crawford Student Feedback That was so much fun, but it was really hard too, when can we do it again? Eva C They gave us tricks and riddles about Maths. We had to solve them in a group. It was really fun. Noah It helped us to work as a group together and get to know each other well. We had to consider answers as it was not always the most obvious. Macey W We had to consider how to work together in a group in a quick amount of time to figure out puzzles. Sonny E It made us think outside of the box. Jack Year 5 & 6 will have their Inquisitive Minds Workshop in Term 4. This Wednesday 15 August, is the Inquisitive Minds – Out of the Box Workshop for Talented Mathematicians. A group of 14 students across Years 5 & 6 will be meeting me at St Paul’s Primary School Gateshead for this event. Reminder notes were send home last week. All students need to be at Gateshead by 9:45am for a 10am start. Kaylene Maretich - Assistant Principal

A few things to consider;

1. Individual artworks will be created by grades 5 and 6. 2. Classes K - 4 will complete a canvas artwork and parents will have an opportunity to purchase the canvas. There is

only 1 canvas per class. 3. The exhibition will have a number of items for sale, including bunting, gift tags, key rings, small woven baskets, lotus

flowers and more. 4. Raffles and silent auctions will also be held.

News from the Classroom Environment News The problem of plastic pollution is growing exponentially every year; we are producing more than 300 million tons of plastic, half of this is designed for single use, and each year around 8 million tons of it ends up in our oceans. We can solve this problem and we can do it by educating and engaging everyone in a conversation to rethink plastic. Most plastic is made from petroleum oil, a non- renewable source. Not all kinds of plastic are recyclable.

1. PET- One of the most common types of plastics used in soft drink bottles etc.

PET is recyclable but at the moment only 25% is being recycled

2. HDPE- a stiff durable plastic used to make toys, picnic tables, shampoo and

cleaning products bottles. This kind of plastic is recyclable but a lot of crinkly HDPE is thrown into land fill rather than

recycled. It needs to go into a special recycler. Look for red recycling bins outside of department stores

3. PVC- used for food packaging, toys, plumbing pipes, shampoo and detergent bottles, cordial bottles. PVC is not

recyclable. This plastic has toxins that can leach out over its lifetime.

4. LDPE- food wrap, ice cream lids, black plastic sheeting, garbage bags, garbage bins and recycling bins. These kind

of plastic are reusable but not generally recyclable, you need to check with your local collection agency.

5. PP- potato crisp bags, hinged lunch boxes, ice cream tubs, drinking straws and microwave ware. It can be granulated

or recycled into fibres

6. PS & EPS- Plastic cutlery, foam cups, foam packaging, yogurt containers. Most recycling collection agencies will not

accept this kind of plastic but there are ways it can be reused, for example as padding in packaging or planting pots.

7. OTHER- all other plastics including BPA, Polycarbonate and LEXAN. Computer casings, hard hats all other resins

and multiple blend plastics- Not Recyclable

The Environmental Team Gifted Education If you are talented in Creative and Performing Arts and in Stage 3, audition applications are now open for the 2019 performance. The closing date for applications is the 28th September, 2018 (last day of Term 3, 2018). Please go to https://aspire.mn.catholic.edu.au/ Deb Petersen – Coordinator Gardening Group Infants had a fun time on Friday, dressed as farmers and planting some bright potted colour into the gardens at the entrance of the sand pit. The sunshine was warm, and the kids had a great time working in the garden. Have a happy week, Mrs Lunn Blue Day Year 4 students will be having a “Blue Day” on Friday 24th August to support Mercy Works. Students are invited to “wear blue” and bring a gold coin donation for this privilege. The canteen will sell blue Moosies and there will be blue bracelets for sale for $4.00ea.

Farmers Fundraiser On Friday the 10th August, we invited the children to come dressed as farmers. We asked for a $2 donation from each child, and this will go directly to the ‘Buy a Bale’ campaign. During the day, we watched news feeds regarding the drought and also read stories about life on the farm. The St Therese’s community raised $1740! The day was a great success and we hope this provides some relief for the farmers. Sara Murdoch

Wellbeing

Kids Matter ~ Body Image Weight worries start at pre-school, experts warned as research by the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years showed almost a third of nursery and school staff have heard a child label themselves fat. Ten per cent said they had heard a child say they felt ugly. There is a "mounting concern" about why children were forming the views. More research is needed in this area, but contributing factors are likely to include: images on TV; images in story books and animations and the general chat by adults about their bodies, dieting and cosmetic surgery. According to research, nearly half of six- to 10-year-olds are unhappy with their appearance. This statistic comes after research completed last year by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, King’s College London and Harvard, suggested children over the age of eight were displaying signs they were dissatisfied with their bodies. As these negative feelings are progressive and developmental, we needed to start looking much, much younger to start to instigate protective factors. We are

beginning to acknowledge that young children have that mental capacity to think about themselves. Dr Harding, of the study, explained that she believed parents needed to "smarten up" and think about what they were saying in front of children, as well as talking in an age-appropriate way about how photographs are doctored. Having a healthy body image means being comfortable and knowing that there is more to you than just your physical appearance. Conversely, having an unhealthy body image involves always thinking your body is unattractive. Sometimes, it can also make a person forget that they have value beyond what they look like. If you have a negative body image, you might:

think you look too fat

feel like you're not pretty or muscular enough

believe your value as a person is determined by your looks

be fixated on trying to change your body shape. Having a sustained unhealthy body image can be associated with illnesses that affect the mind and body. Having an unhealthy body image is bad for general wellbeing and can be time consuming. Below are a few tips for improving your body image:

1. Question media images - we are bombarded with images of unrealistic and unobtainable bodies; try not to compare

yourself with them and remember that often what you see on TV and online are not true depictions of real people.

2. Avoid any media, social media or websites that make you feel bad or suggest you need to change the way you look.

3. Focus on the positive things your body can do.

4. Look for similarities between your body and the bodies of other members of your family.

5. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable.

6. Try positive self talk.

7. Avoid being critical of other people's bodies - negative attitudes are contagious.

PBS Virtue Focus - Being Welcoming. To be welcoming is an important part of our St Therese community. We always welcome new students and families and we always welcome parents, grandparents and other family members to join in and be a part of our community. When we welcome others, it is a way to show them that we care. It is a way to look out for others and to include them in our lives and everyday activities. When we welcome others, it makes them feel connected and gives them a sense of belonging. As humans, we are social beings and these connections are part of our deepest needs and desires. So let’s make sure we are always looking out for others and to welcome them into our lives. Luke Smith – Coordinator

Workshops with Cheryl Roberts Dear parents Just a reminder that the parent information evenings are continuing and will also run next term. Recently I attended the childhood trauma Conference/workshop in Melbourne with Renown Author, Physician and speaker, Dr Gabor Mate’ (How to create an environment that promotes health and healing with children/families where chaos prevails) and look forward to sharing the information. Now more than ever I feel positively validated in the knowing that for childhood mental and emotional health, growth and wellbeing there must be more support and information given to the parent and carers. Nothing will change without changing something and you must be informed to do that. The statistics are very clear in the rise of childhood conditions, anxieties and depression and the thing is, the cycle can be broken and turned around with very simple tools. First comes the knowing and understanding. What drives the behaviours???? When there is an understanding of that, change can happen. Parenting today is more stressful with social expectations and demands. Children are exposed to so much more via media, technology, peer pressure and the need to fit-in and belong. Many parents mention that they seem to have lost the title of leader. That their children are defying parent direction. Frustration and stress in the family unit is present daily. The intention of these sessions is to give you, the parent, awareness and understanding of what drives the behaviour and how you can lead your children in a peer orientated and technological world. The sessions will help you to understand the challenges the child faces in his/her world. How you as a parent can relate to them with respect and understanding and still be the Captain. Challenges parents face with children and anxiety. Behaviours, meltdowns, opposition, lack of resilience and esteem. How to build a relationship that makes them want to look to you for leadership, instead of peers/society. How can you be the change in the chaos? You can’t know until you know!!! BOYS Soccer Gala Day A big thankyou to all the parents and carers who transported the children, managed a team, refereed a game, cheered on a team and supported the players. We would not have been able to compete in the gala without your generous support. The day was an amazing chance for the boys to play this sport in a friendly, and not too competitive manner. The boys were tremendous ambassadors for the school displaying great sportsmanship, self-discipline and respect for the referee and for the opposing team. They played consistently throughout the day having great fun and were thoroughly tired at day’s end. Looking forward to next years gala! General notices OOSH

Hello from everyone at YMCA OOSH, It’s been another fun week here with so much going on including craft, group games and outdoor play. Craft last week was bubble wrap paintings, making flowers using coffee filters, play dough making and cardboard box creations. Board games such as Cluedo, Pictionary, Sequence and Payday have been popular as have card games and UNO. The children have enjoyed creating with our new wooden blocks and also the new car parking stations and cars. Outdoors we continue with epic frisbie throwing competitions, soccer, rock pit play and equipment tips. Educators have enjoyed joining in with the children in huge group games playing chasies too. IMPORTANT – Please let us know as soon as possible if your child/children are going to be absent from OOSH. We are now at capacity on some afternoons with only a few spots free for casual bookings when there are children absent, so the earlier we know the better we are able to help out families needing casual or emergency booking. Knowing your child/children are going to be absent for After School Care also means that Educators are not spending time looking for children who are absent from school or collected early. Your assistance with this will be greatly appreciated. To allow Educators to spend more time with children we are now asking that they bring their own drink bottle to OOSH to refill at our drink station. Of course we will always provide a cup for children who forget their water bottle but having their own will reduce time away from children to clean 100 cups. *** EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST ARE NOW BEING TAKEN FOR THE PUPIL FREE DAY ON MONDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER 2018. PLEASE LET STAFF KNOW IF YOU WILL BE NEEDING CARE ON THIS DAY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WE NEED AT LEAST 30 CHILDREN BOOKED IN TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE ON THIS DAY***YOU CAN ALSO BOOK IN FOR THIS DAY ONLINE OR VIA THE APP*** ***VACATION CARE BOOKINGS WILL OPEN EARLY ON MONDAY 20TH AUGUST 2018 FOR THE SPRING HOLIDAY PERIOD.
