We also help with Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets. We invite you to come check us out. Please call Kathy Price, 936-662-4295. We hope you will take some time to reflect on God’s calling to you to serve those in need through The Socie-ty of St. Vincent de Paul.

The Fire of Your Love: The Fourth Commandment

By Will Oliver

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.” (Exodus 20:12)

The Fourth Commandment given to us by God begins the second part of the 10 Commandments. The first three commandments were about honoring our God, while the second set provides us with a moral code of how to live on earth amongst each other. It is notable that the first of these tells us to honor our parents. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, “The fourth commandment is addressed expressly to children in their relationship to their father and mother, because the relationship is universal” (CCC 2199). Children should respect their parents, not just when they are young, but all the days of their lives, including when they are old and in the last years of their lives. There is also a generational consideration in this commandment, for if the children honor their parents, and those parents (who are themselves children) honor their parents, and so on, it creates a generational bonding that is important to our society. This commandment also works in reverse because it presupposes that mothers and fathers do the things that are worth honoring; that they are not themselves living in sin by violating the other command-ments. Parents have a duty to care and protect their children, to bring them up in the faith, so as to give their children something worth honoring. Family is not only the foundation of our society, it is the foundation of our Church. As the Catechism clearly states, “A man and a woman united in marriage, together with their children, form a family” and that “this institution is prior to any recognition by public authority” (2202). Yet, we also know our family relation-ships are sometimes the hardest to deal with, which is why the placement of this commandment as the first of the second group is so important. Mother Teresa once said, “It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us. Bring love into your home, for this is where our love for each other must start.” It starts with the love of our parents. Where we commit many of our sins is when we fail in our duties as children under this commandment. Do we respect our parents? Do we show gratitude for all they have done for us? Do we show our love for them? Are we obedient to their wishes? Do we support them in times of illness, loneliness, or distress? Do we maintain harmony with our brothers and sisters? And have we kept the faith? The Catechism also speaks of the duties of parents as well. Have we taken a role in our children’s education? Their faith formation? Do we respect them as children of God? Have we created a home that reflects our faith? Have we evangelized our own children? Have we helped them to grow in holiness? Do we provide for their physical, emotional and spiritual needs? Have we helped them make the transition to their vocation? Their profession? Their own marriage and family? During this Lenten season, we should reflect on our relationships within our families. As children, have we honored our mother and father? As parents, have we done things that are worth honoring? Mother Teresa also once asked rhetorically, “How can we love Jesus in the world today?” and she answered, “By loving Him in my husband, my wife, my children, my brothers and sisters, my parents.”

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors facing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
