Bishop Joseph A. Pepe invites all parishioners of the Diocese of Las Vegas to join him at the Guardian Angel Cathedral on Tuesday, March 27th at 6:00 PM for the Chrism Mass. At this liturgy the sacred oils used at each parish throughout the year to anoint those receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination and Anointing of the Sick will be blessed by the Bishop. This Mass is also the time for the priests of our diocese to renew their vows of Holy Orders. Your attendance at this mass would show our oneness as a community of believers made possible through our Bishop and priests.

Welcome to

St. Viator! Our parish is administered by the Clerics of St. Viator, Chicago Province. The Clerics of St. Viator were founded in Vourles, France in the 19

th century after the

French Revolution. Fr. Louis Querbes created the order to provide

much-needed education. As patron saint of the congregation, Fr. Querbes chose Viator, a young, 4

th century catechist-lector of the

cathedral church of Lyons, France. St. Viator was devoted to teaching youth, especially the poor, and serving parishes in all matters related to the liturgical practice. The “Viatorians” came to Las Vegas in 1954. They were asked to administer the first Catholic high school in southern Nevada and they started this parish as well. Mass was held in the home of parishioners, then a bank and various other locations. The parish moved to this location in the ‘60s when the parish school was built. Our current church was opened in 1995. Our Parish Center, the building immediately to the south, was the church from 1977 until ‘95 and before that, Mass was said in the school gym. Our Parish School is pre-K thru 8

th, with

double classrooms for grades K-8. Students are offered a variety of co-curricular programs, including a science fair, geography bee, spelling bee, forensics, band, video broadcasting, and class trips for Junior High, culminating with the 8

th Grade trip to

Washington, D.C.

Welcome!

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, volunteering for a parish organization, when asked to be a baptism or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptism and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are always available online at www.stviator.org and at the parish office, or fill out the information below and drop it in the collection basket. We will mail a registration packet to you.

Rosary Makers Rosary Sale

Did you know that most of the rosaries made by our Rosary Makers are given away? Missions, ministries and patients at hospitals are the recipients of most of the beautiful rosaries produced by the St. Viator Rosary Makers.

Please support their efforts. Rosaries are on sale in the office. They make a perfect gift for Easter, Mother’s Day, First Holy Communion, or Confirmation!

The proceeds from rosary sales are used to purchase materials to continue their ministry of producing rosaries which bring hope and comfort to so many who are struggling.

Youth Group hosted the Stations of

the Cross on March 2nd. They added elements of

Taizé prayer, music and candles, to the prayer service.

Thank you to all the youth who brought this prayer to our parish.

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

As we journeyed through the Season of Lent, our thoughts may have turned to places of the Holy Land where our Lord lived, ministered, died, and rose from the dead. You may have been blessed to experience these holy places first hand. Whether first hand or a passage from the bible, our memories bring this ancient land to life. However, the reality of the current situation in the Holy Land often does not match the scenes of our imagination.

On Good Friday, the annual collection taken in our churches will benefit Christians living in the Holy Land, as well as support the ministries of the Franciscan friars entrusted with its care. For almost 800 years, the Franciscans have cared for the principal shrines of our Christian faith. The work of the friars also includes the care of refugees and those marginalized people throughout the region and the preservation of the Holy Land’s missions and schools.

These schools and parishes are signs of present, as well as future, peace and hope. The Collection for the Holy Land, in the words of Paul VI is "not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities." The Pontifical Good Friday Collection is applied to these programs below:

Faith, Memory & Culture ~ The Holy Places. Holy Land Franciscans staff and maintain the Holy places and shrines. This enables those who live in the Holy Land and those who visit to deepen their faith and their spiritual and cultural connection to Salvation history.

Social & Charitable Activities ~ In order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including the poor and young couples, the Custody builds thousands of residential units. Additionally, they build senior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the needy.

Educational & Scientific Activities ~ The Franciscans operate and support schools open to all, regardless of religion or nationality. They provide scholarships for students to prepare them to get jobs and remain in the Holy Land as part of living Catholic communities. Funds are distributed to young men studying to become Franciscan priests or brothers. Finally, Franciscan archaeologists pursue ongoing research at the Holy Places discovering historical artifacts.

Pastoral Activities ~ The Franciscans provide pastoral care in 29 parishes in the Holy Land offering Worship, Christian Formation, and family programs.

Liturgical, Ecumenical and Communications Programs ~ The Franciscan Media Center tells the story of the Holy Land through multimedia distributed throughout the world in more than seven languages. The friars organize Liturgical Celebrations for the local Christians and Pilgrims and share with other Christian communities in the Holy Land in ongoing Ecumenical cooperation.

Please be as generous as your abundance allows. Donating to the Good Friday Annual Collection allows the “living stones” to inhabit the Holy Places, provides indispensable support to the Franciscan Custody and their mission, but in doing so, bears witness to the Resurrection of Christ.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas

St. Viator Students Know Their Way Around the World

What would you do if you were going somewhere you’ve never been and your phone died – along with your navigation app?

You could find it on a map – if you had one of those ancient relics in your car -- or you could turn to the members of the St. Viator School team which just took 1

st Place in the Catholic Schools Geography Bee.

Ellowyn G., Chase S., & Kevin S. bested the other five teams to emerge as school champions, with Kevin also taking 2

nd place overall..

The three represented St. Viator because they were the top scorers for their grades in the school-wide geography competition held in January. As overall

winner of that Bee, Chase was eligible to try for the statewide contest. He qualified for that and will compete in April for a chance to go to the national tournament in Washington, D.C. To prepare to compete against the other Catholic schools, they studied after school twice a week, guided by Jr. High Geography teacher, Mr. Ken Mertzman. Questions for the competition include history, culture, geography and geographic features. He helped them decipher how a question can be examined to determine the answer from internal clues. For instance, he indicated one of the official questions: The Cactus Wren, which nests in thorny desert plants such as the saguaro cactus, is the official bird of which state – Arizona or Connecticut? Even if you never heard of that bird or that cactus, the fact it’s talking about a desert means the answer is Arizona. Each student in the Catholic Schools Geography Bee competed in seven rounds of questions, ranging from individual ones with multiple choices or no choice at all, to all students receiving the same question and writing their answers on a white board (think of Final Jeopardy, without the tension-inducing music). Students had 15 seconds to give their answers. Eighth Grader Kevin had never competed in the school’s Geography Bee before. Chase has a great pedigree for knowledge about traveling – his mother was a flight attendant and his father is a pilot. As a 7

th Grader, he gets another shot next year.

Ellowyn competed as a 5

th Grader last year but “didn’t do well,” which “inspired me to try harder,”

she said. “St. Viator wins a lot of things in sports,” she continued, “but it shows we can do great things academically.” After studying about people and places around the world, where do these geographic experts most want to visit? Italy for Kevin, the Philippines for Ellowyn, and Dubai for Chase. When they reach their dream location, you can bet they will know all about it.

Registration for next year is now open. If you would like your child to be part of the quality Catholic education at St. Viator School, call 702-732-4477.

Please pray for our sick and bereaved

Prayer for the sick Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch or weep tonight and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ, rest your weary ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones. Shield your joyous ones, and for all your love’s sake. Amen

~ St. Augustine

Prayer for those who mourn Dearest Jesus, who wept at the death of your friend and taught that they who mourn shall be comforted, grant the comfort of your presence to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one. Send Your Holy Spirit to direct them as they make decisions. Send Your Spirit to give them courage lest through fear they recoil from living. Send Your Spirit to bring them your peace lest bitterness, false guilt, or regret take root in their hearts. Amen
